This is a huge upgrade to the Battery Shelf / Battery2.0! I have now started the project and this video is the first of a series where we explore the brand-new amazing battery system. But before getting really into it, we have to prepare the Raspberry Pi running the Victron Venus OS and install a CAN Hat add-on board. This provides us with the ability to communicate with the BMS, which will come in the next video.
So, here is the step-by-step tutorial on how to connect the CAN function board to the Raspi and how to enable it in the Victron Venus OS.
As explained, if you have an inverter with CAN function or the Victron Cerbo GX, you are already set and don't need to do anything to use the new BMS system, which I will show in the next video. So, sit back and enjoy the video...

Thinking that with the problems with the adhesive for the Velcro, you may want to consider replacing the case with one that works with a DIN rail. That would get screwed to the back of the battery box, and the Pi would hang off the DIN rail as a permanent solution. You may also consider picking up a 12 volt 40mm fan and use that off one of the GPIO pin pairs that give you +5 and ground. The fan will last nearly forever, and be quieter than a 5v fan.

That is a good suggestion. I like that. I could use the DIN rail for further expansion.

I have the (nearly) same setup as you have. 3 Batteries in Paralell. All with JK BMS though. At the moment connected to Cerbo with RS485 to USB. Just for monitoring. Connected are 3 Active Balancers. I start balancing at 3,45 Volts. Starting automaticly, programmed in Home Assistant. I want it to be over CAN. So I can't wait for your sollution. My BMS has the option of changing the port from RS485 to CAN. But there its over for me. Don't know how to continue. I'll be waiting at my TV screen for the next video. Greeting from Rob. There are a few good aluminum heatsink style cases that can be used with header extenders which would give good cooling without compromising the ability to use the header, ... but your hat would be outside of the case entirely on all the ones I've seen.

Arctic Silver makes a "Thermal Adhesive" which functions like thermal PASTE but makes a "Permanent" connection. This might be helpful in keeping your heat sink attached to the Raspberry PI. A word of caution though, it is permanent and whatever is connected together cannot be separated.

Now I'm thinking about switching to the new JKBMS !!! What is the Benefit when i change to the new JK-BMS ? Is it necessary to use an isolated Can Hat like the isolated USB/TTL Adapter or is it not necessary ?? Thank you

Hello Andy, I've took a look in Victron World at your installation and saw, that you charge a battery out of a battery. Left corner "Discharge" = -2640W" and right beside "DC Power" (thats your 2 other battery packs?!?) are charged with 700W. Solar Power at this moment is 340W total. AC Load = 2090W So, the first battery pack is charging the other ones. Is this not a waste of energy due to to much energy losses? For me it seems more effective, to provide this power directly to your ac-loads. Regards from cold snowy Germany to sunny hot Australia

It uses Can so maybe one day I will be able to have the Jakiper batteries communicate with it. Forget about it talking to the inverter - that is a reliable but non communicating Outback inverter. I did try to figure out the controller Can protocols but trying to figure out all that stuff makes my old brain hurt. After I get modbus stuff figured out then everyone has to start using Can !

I came here from your last video where you had issues with the board. The assumption on 16:45 is completely wrong. Can is differential but that does NOT mean it doesn't need a ground reference. Sometimes I also heard it referred to as "quasi-differential" because the individual CAN-H and CAN-L lines are still referenced to ground and not to each other. Therefor the tranceiver on the devices still needs a common ground reference. This is especially true when the transceiver is not galvanically isolated from the rest of the system (if it were the protection diodes can usually do the job although it's also not an ideal solution).

Most double-sided thermal tape is garbage. Some work okay until they heat up, and then the glue fails, which is probably not what you want. I generally use thermal conductive epoxy. You're not going to get the heatsink off if you use epoxy, but it's also not going to fall off. I always check to make sure it's not conductive, but haven't found any that is, so I think it's pretty safe no matter where it goes.

After seeing this I just go and buy a Cerbo. It shows once again Raspi is mainly for tinkering, but having my power rely on stuff like melting glue, heatsinks falling to the PCB and modified cases is not going to happen. At the end, with all the bits and pieces used to make a Raspi ready as a solar power controller you save at most 100 bucks. 😂 That‘s not worth the effort, I rather spend this effort to optimize my power consumption and management.
