Hi Andy Often when setting up a 10kV generator set to supply power grid, we setup 2 over current protection stages, one with lower A setting and high delay and the secund with higher A setting and low delay. To make trip faster on higher A measurements and allowing smaller A exceeding the limit for a bit longer. I think the 9 pin (maybe serial) connector you are talking about in the beginning is called Sub-D.

Thanks again Andy. I concur with your conclusions about limiting BMS setting to withing parameters that would not cause damage as a essential feature for and OEM device. Perhaps it's worth considering that a BMS might be best considered a Battery Protection Device when it comes to charging and discharging and should not be relied on for charging management in lieu of a proper charge controller and dedicated under voltage protection. I recently tested several LFE single sell charging/boards for smaller cell packs, and found the charge voltage was set to 3.7 to 3.75V but the current had tapered down from constant charging current of 3A to 6A up to about 3.4V to 3.5V , and then to about 100ma to 300ma at 3.6v and and 50ma to 3.7V. One Charging Board manufacturer who respond to my questions about the 3.7V+ charged voltage they used, and they replied that 3.75V design maximum voltage for LifePo4 chemistry, and industry tests indicate that little if any additional LifePo4 cell degradation occurs up to 3.75V vs 3.6V, and degradation typically only becomes a factor closer to 4V. if charge rates are below 0.5C, add that their modules were intended to be used with small, inexpensive cell packs intended for a use case of several hundred cycles such as in medical and hobby devices. I found some test data from Chinese universities that seemed to confirm what the manufacturer indicated, and I did some overcharging tests using 32700, 6ah LIfePo4 cells charging them at 1amp above 3.6v to 3.75V produced little of any additional heat, but at 1 amp the cells heated noticeably from about 3.8 to 4.2V, did not heat up to 5.2V if charge rates were kept to below 100ma. I tested overcharging a new cells I assumed to be defective because arrived at only 1.5V and self-discharged fairly quickly after charging to 3.6V, and tested at only about 4.5 Ah rather than rated 6ah, by charging them to 5V and even 6V at 1amp until they reached about 45C and then left them float charge at about a 200ma charge at 5.2 volts for about 8 hours to see f they would damage, and to my surprise, they dissipated to about 3.5v and held and returned to nearly 6ah of capacity. I just checked one of the self-discharging cells that arrived at 1.5V which I severely overcharged a year ago and it was at 3.45V and still tests at close to it's rated capacity. I have no way of knowing what it's cycle life is after severely overcharging it, but it appears the severe overcharging remedied it's self-discharging issue. On small inexpensive packs (I'm using the 3.7V packs for eBike voltage Booster packs). I think 3.75V is acceptable, I currently have a 3.2v, 25ah booster pack with about 300 cycles I've been charging to 3.75V and discharging to 2.5V and it's at the same or higher capacity it was when new. However, my $50 packs intended to last a few years, not $3000+ dollar battery banks intended to last a decade so having a perfectly configured BMS and charging system in that case is essential.
@OffGridGarageAustralia Жыл бұрын
The BMS only requests the charging from the inverter or MPPT. If the MPPT fails, it will still protect the battery in this case. Interesting testing you're doing. You should have your own KZbin channel and show this on there. I would watch it.

@Andy: I read these current protection values this way: 200A (OC1) will be triggered after 5s. If the current is over 250A (OC2), it will be triggered after 0.5s. Take a look at the different delays for the currents. Its not about warning and protection, its about different allowance times. So combining alarm and protection tab for Charging: Alarm (Warning) will be risen, if current is higher than 102A after 1s. Charging will be cut off after 5s when current is higher than 200A or after 0.5s if current is higher than 250A.

With the OC1 and OC2, I wonder if they apply in parallel, with the first being set to a lower current but a longer delay, so that it allows charging at 200A for 5S or 250A for 0.5S, or discharging at 210A for 10S or 250A for 0.5S?

12:00 I interpret it as discharging 200A for 5 seconds or 250A for 0.5seconds ... etc 13:00 Meritsun claims their batteries can go upto 70⁰C... 70C is scorching hot IMO; I can't hold it indefinitely. 20:38 >200AH pack and ~200mv deviation, with 100ma balancing current wait 2 weeks to balance it.
@OffGridGarageAustralia Жыл бұрын
- I'll test how the BMS and settings actually work but they have now confirmed that it is in fact only a 200A BMS so, a 250A setting makes not much sense unless they want to create their own warranty cases. - Temperatur settings are far too high in my opinion - yeah the balancing does not do a dent in this battery. I'll do a full top balancing and see how it behaves afterwards.
@zeropointbalance7366 Жыл бұрын
Andy, Thanks for looking at all the details for a battery system like this. You managed to laser focus on why lockdown is such a bad idea: It forces the customers to accept the bad quality decisions made my the manufacturers and it shows what appears to be a setting that will destroy your battery if you use it at low temperatures. Many customers are not as savy as you and will be very unhappy when they are forced to throw out the batteries. In this case there is a worse issue: apparently QSO does not know that their batteries need balancing occasionally. Why do I say that? Well, if you, as an expert user get frustrated balancing a clearly out-of balance battery what do you think the average user will be able to do? It would be interesting to see what it takes to balance this battery with the built in QSO supplied balancer: My go to test for this type of balancer is to set the charger to 55.4V and walk away. Check voltages once a day and record (just to see if they actually move). If they do not move, there may be the infamous “charge balancing” type setting getting in the way (is it hidden and also locked down? Like on the Daly). You should see the voltages move eventually. If it truly is 120mA (good chance it will less, maybe 40mA?) you should be able to balance 2.7aH/day. So your battery should come into balance in a day or two. (This is my go-to method to balance any battery with my clip-on Heltec balancer, which has an effective rating of 1A for this method and can do 24AH/day. My guesstimate four your out of balance is ~~3aH, that is why I say a day or two - from your low cell at 3.388V) If it takes a day I would say the balancer is actually working good enough and I could recommend buying this battery, anything much longer I would tell people to stay away and tell QSO to fix/improve their balancer, and while they are at it also fix the temperature settings.

For the MOSFET temperature they can usually comfortably have a 150C junction temperature perhaps much higher, so 110C is probably a good number. As an aside there's a good video by Der8auer recently where he was talking with an Intel thermal engineer and the guy said he finds it funny when people worry about the temperature of their CPUs. For the environmental temperature, I can understand why someone would be paranoid about having it shut off if the battery is being used for a critical application. Imagine you want to start a circulation pump for a heating system and the battery won't let you, despite the battery itself being okay? I agree -25C is low, but even your suggestion of 10C seems high to me for just a case temperature. There must be a middle ground there. I think I sympathise with the battery vendor, but I also agree that if there's not enough control it won't be useful.

I can only write in German, my Englsh is not well enough. Sorry for that.

Hey Andy!! very very interesting!!! but i would say AIE Aie Aie!!!😱 My opinion Andy, does it smell bad!? and communicate with the saleswoman who does not understand anything, she translates into Chinese (who certainly does not speak English) to their engineer, who she translates again for you into English!!! it's just impossible they are beginners.🤣 That they block access to the parameters I can understand it, Why? because quite simply, some people think they know, make BMS adjustments, and in reality do not know. This is the reason, and indeed if they give you example 5 or 10 years(joke🤣) of guarantee, it is on that in the terms they say that these the original parameters were changed, the guarantee is no longer valid. But in any good BMS, there are memories, it's easy to see what happened in case of a problem. But if you are in direct contact with the engineer, you will have permission. (normally but you have already tried? this type of BMS the code is 123456) What I could see is that the battery is 96% charged (BMS Data, the differences you may have between your victron shunt and the BMS maybe? come from the current limiting of the BMS?) Cells V avg 3.64, main voltage pack 53.82 V, everything is fine... but After!!!! at 55.2V (your absorption) it's a disaster!!😱 a cell at 3.38v and one close to the limit ovp 3.62v !!! I'm sue if you waited a bit the BMS go to OVP (Cell) with cells not even balanced?! I have rarely seen this!! 0,24 difference! it doesn't smell good at all! Andy can you try to balance them? but I think it will not work for long? It will start again after several cycles. And all these battery are with welded bus bar! With the hindsight that we have, our little experience in this field of LFP battery and BMS (be humble😊) I do not understand that so-called LFP battery professionals can deliver to their customers a battery that gives such results? QSO is apparently a reseller of cells, but maybe they are not 1- who manufacture the BMS? 2 who develops the software? and 3 also not them who assembles the battery?? I can't wait to see what's next, I wish you good luck, but you absolutely must contact an engineer, otherwise it's impossible. Again thank you very much Andy for this video, my personal point of view, I will never buy a battery pack from them.😩

I don't really believe the story with the Current. To me it looks as if it would accept 200A for 5sec and 250 for .5s. This is probably why they have 2 current limits.

See, ... This is why People NEED to speak with their "Wallets", ... If you DON'T buy "SHIT", that is poorly designed/doesn't work/doesn't work properly..... The Mfg'rs will get the message, and, produce the product that is wanted, or, they will go out of business, ... Sooo .. simple .. IDK.... Must be me......... BTW..... Thanks, Andy, for all you do.........

The problem is many purchasers wont know about any of this and go right ahead and purchase. They will sell boat loads if the price is right.

@@jimjones7821 I Wholeheartedly agree with you, ... It's SOOO Hard to fix "Stupid", and, I just wish more would work on "Ignorant", that really isn't a hard one to fix.... For myself, there is "NEVER" enough education/due diligence, and, when I F' it up, I OWN it, has kept "same mistake twice" to a minimum, ... Well, ... That, ..and, ..All in my circle, ... The normal solution to protect your device and have configurable settings it to manage maximum and minimum settings for each parameter. Doesn't sound that difficult....

Get a remote session and use a keylogger to get the admin password 😈 Or maybe check their parameters on your hard drive and see if you can decode it to change them manually. Oh, I see you got the password!

Not necessary to do anything to please me. I like your channel and watch it often. Learned a great deal about my Victron system from your experiences, And I thank you for that. I think you do a great service for the solar community. As one who doesn't build battery banks my comment was out of frustration, and was inappropriate. I offer my apology.

The settings are a shocker. They tried to fix it with some XML files they sent me. Some were in Chinese and they gave me wrong instructions on how to import and write them to the BMS. It's very daunting...
