About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. John 20:14‭-‬16 KJV

Wow, I’ve been catching up on all of your old videos and this happens to be the first video of your that I ever saw. I had been surfing KZbin for homesteading videos and this one popped up. This was a couple of years ago, and I can’t believe it took me this long to watch your channel, but now I am addicted and I can’t stop watching. You two are my biggest inspiration and you give me hope for my future homestead.

Ha! My next door neighbor, actually a mile east of our farm, raised show chickens, many years ago, and his wife would babysit for us whenever we wanted a break and a meal that was cooked and served by someone else, One Friday evening, right after Cathy started watching our baby, we dropped him off and I wondered where Frankie was, since he usually came out to greet me. "Oh, he's down in the basement giving his chickens a bath". I never heard of bathing chickens so I went down the steps and there sat Frankie, a snow white silky chicken clamped between his knees, he was waving a blow dryer around in the air and was blow drying this chicken in preparation for a weekend show! Needless to say, the chicken wasn't smiling, Frankie wasn't smiling, and my open guffaw when I took in this scene was also not too much appreciated! "Aren't you afraid of getting shocked using an electric blow dryer on that wet chicken?" I asked, "No, in fact I would gladly eat this d**n chicken if that happened!" I asked him why he picked chickens for show animals when he had licenses to raise some exotic species like Ocelots, Elk, and Deer along with huge big rabbits that were really cool even for me, who raised nothing smaller than quarter horses. He replied "They're easier to load in the trailer." So Frankie would wash and blow dry 20 to 30 chickens the night before a show and it would drive his wife PLUMB NUTS!!! She even called my wife one Wednesday begging her to bring the baby over so she had an excuse to NOT wash chickens!! [I guess she washed and he dried] Ha! OK, well, to each his own, but I think Frankie either made good on his implied threat for his brood of chickens or a coyote got under the chicken wire when he forgot and left them outside overnight but, either way, the chicken "herd" disappeared within the summer of that year. But the mental picture of Frankie with a wet chicken clamped between his knees and a blow dryer frantically waving above that danged chicken will always be a treat for me! Such is life in the country .....

@framerguy
@framerguy 7 жыл бұрын
@Keith Hacker aka, Theresa - you are wanting classes on basic living? Heck, we are looking at real living back in the '30's, '40's, and into the early post war '50's and there were no classes. It was simply the way it was back in that era. I was a teacher for 13 of my years and I don't recall even one class in "How to live" 101. Best thing to do, IF you are serious about off grid living is simply pull the plug and DO IT. Sure it's hard, sure it's giving up many of your "toys" and going back to weird things like reading a book, going to bed at sundown, eating nutritious meals, or growing what you eat. For entertainment, you would be forced into finding out about the outdoors and all the secrets that are still out there for someone to enjoy, listening to the songs sung each morning as you wake up and enjoy your first cup of tea on the front porch. You will quickly form your own "Top 10" list and it will be YOURS to keep or modify, not the end result of a bunch of kids buying a bunch of CD's with nasty language and suggestive conduct as an attraction. It is NOT a sin to get dirt under your finger nails. There is NO admission charged for a morning walk in the woods or along a stream bank or a pond in a pasture. You DON'T need reservations for a front row seat to some of the most gorgeous "films" known to man, a fiery sunset, a soft subtle melting of darkness into a beautiful scene as the sun slowly breaks over the eastern horizon aka, a sunrise, 2 squirrels playing "tag" in your yard, YOUR yard! There's never a waiting line to buy tickets, just SHOW UP and don't be late or you'll miss the main feature. Come to think about it, there ARE classes that you can attend or watch. All you have to do is shed the anxiety and fear of having to take responsibility for your OWN actions and find a small piece of land ...... or even RENT to start out and try some of the opportunities still available out there. I am so glad I was blessed with having to live the "Hard Life" of my childhood in the 40's and 50's. Many of the "things" that people seek today to break the chains of entanglement in the web of a battery operated electronic world in which we live are the exact things we had as the only way to live back in that earlier time. My friends sometimes ask "How do you know about all these things?" and I simply answer, "I have lived these "things." It is what it is ......

I hope u read this..... the post /stake Fence pounder pipe your using is very handy. however, be very careful that u don't drive it downward with the stake nipples facing towards u & then accidentally get the pipe caught on one of those while on your downward thrust. I've dug & installed several hundred cedar post in the Ozarks by hand with post hole digger. but, when I used the pipe to pound down the metal post the rim of the pipe got caught on the metal nipple used for tying off the wire fence & the top solid metal part shot forwards toward my face & head & literally split open my scull open......yes!!!! it took several stitches & resting up before I was out of the woods. even though your taller it could still jam up & hit you in the mouth or nose. I'm watching u drive those steel post & it just brought back memories. Just be careful it's the only time I ever been hit hard enough to bring me to my knees.....lol. I bled like a stuck pig & my dad thought I was going to die.....yah, not funny @ the time. I still have the cracked line in my scull & can run my fingers down the separation. blessings to you & yours.

Is it hard to find buyers for the sheep? How long did it take for you to be able to learn how to care for your herd?

Love the series and seeing the farm. So pretty. The horse (and nose of the other, lol) appearance was wonderful. The brown one you could see is gorgeous!! Was that biggest sheep trying to head butt you when you were taking the others out? At first I thought, "awww how sweet" cause it kept following you. Now I wonder if it knew you were up to something and was just bird dogging ya to see what you were up to? LOL 😂 I'm teasing you. Not being a smart butt. I just really thought it was cute to see. Plus I've never been around sheep 🐑, only horses and cows so I LOVE learning about different farm animals. Thanks for sharing. God Bless you both and have a great time at Baker Creek. That's a trip I'd love to take one day. 💞Lisa

Great Job Doug you and Stacy are doing great and thank you guys for the lessons learned. Question what is the thumbs rule on how many acres of paddock needed for 6 Sheep, also how do you deal with ticks on the sheep? Again thank you guys

The first time I have seen your sheep. That to me is one of the hardest part of having animals is to sell them. The other is butcher them. I know that is part of having livestock but not the fun part. First I seen the horses too. Nice if you would do a video about them.

If you are getting your shirts handmade looks like goodwill quality unless they are at least 5 years old. Get clothing that lasts and hold up to farming not want a be slick jack.
