Awesome job. How would you do this without the planar and jointer? (I’m new to woodworking, I think that’s what those first tools were lol)
@ChestnutRidgeWorkshop Жыл бұрын
Without those big machines to use, this is still very doable. I needed those because I bought cheaper lumber that needed some work to make it usable. I would suggesting buying 5/4 (roughly 1" thick) lumber like poplar for this project. You may find it at a box store, but a local hardwood supplier would be better if you have one. They could even plane it for you if needed. Then you're just dealing witht the sanding and finish work.

Can you share what type of brackets used to hold them up and also what type of screws? Did you have to use anchors?
@ChestnutRidgeWorkshop3 жыл бұрын
I just got these ones at Home Depot, nothing special. I used 3.5" wood screws, and a stud finder to make sure I hit the studs. I wouldn't trust wall anchors in this application, there's too much weight.
@talhaghazi41993 жыл бұрын
Hey I’m doing something similar. I got these 1 1/4 #7 screws for mounting the on the studs. I will be having heavy books too. Is this enough, or is there a screw you’d recommend. It looks like you used much longer ones
@ChestnutRidgeWorkshop3 жыл бұрын
You need at least a 2.5" #8 or 9 screw. I used 3.5" but I have very thick plaster walls. Point is you want at least 1.5" of screw into the stud.

Do you know how much weight does a wall carry for hanging?
@ChestnutRidgeWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
Shelves like this will carry 40-50lbs per linear foot easy. As for the wall itself, fasteners would fail long before the wall itself. Hope I answered the right question there. Let me know if I didn't.
@MsHanna6662 жыл бұрын

Great video! Have been wanting to start a project like this for my vinyl records. How much weight could the shelves hold with brackets?
@ChestnutRidgeWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Not exactly sure on the weight, but mine holding roughly 100lbs per shelf on the long side. So I have about 25lbs per bracket right now. I'm certain they could take more, but I don't have an exact number. Get those bracket screws into the studs and you should be fine.
@dg20154 жыл бұрын
What size brackets did you buy? What spacing did you put them at? Thanks!
@ChestnutRidgeWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
The brackets are 8" x 10", with the long side on the wall. They are spaced at 32", but it varies in a couple spots just based on shelf length.

@@ChestnutRidgeWorkshop I wonder if these have twisted or warped? I'm getting ready to do mines but worried it will twist or warp since they are so long. I'm thinking about doing 8ft or 10 ft boards. Any advice to prevent them from warping or twisting?
@ChestnutRidgeWorkshop Жыл бұрын
@Paul Yang you'll want to make sure you have them in your home for at least a month before doing any work with them. If you have a moisture meter that's even better. You want them dry and acclimated or yes they will warp, twist, cup, etc.

Can track/shelves intended for books hold up sufficiently with anchor screws on concrete walls?

For this project I went cheap and just used dimensional lumber from Home Depot. If you do the same just be very picky, and make sure it's reasonably dry. Most locations carry kiln dried in couple sizes.

nice shelves! the trick that I had with corners, is getting the shelves on one wall aligned with the shelf on the next wall.... dealing with the height being exactly equal, but then the boards not laying exactly equally flat.... but then again... once I put stuff in the shelves... books or whatever.. that small quarter inch difference in the slope did not matter./../ the height came out the same.. just that wood, being wood... they have their warping characteristics...might not have ben an issue, if I planed them down.....and screwed them to the brackets..
@ChestnutRidgeWorkshop3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching, and love the username! Even with slotted holes in the brackets and kiln dried wood I still see significant seasonal movement in these ones. Many times those corners are not aligned well at all.
