Yup. They painted the stapler red so it would pop out in the scenes. It represented the small, petty things that become oddly significant within office culture. As the flick became a cult classic, there was a cottage industry of folks buying the monochrome stapler, doing excellent jobs of painting them red and then selling them on eBay. It demonstrated a demand that convinced Swingline to change a way of doing business that they had maintained for decades.

Mike Judge actually worked as an engineer in the tech world before he got into showbiz, and much of this movie was based on his experiences with that job. When he was asked why this movie was seen as so much more relatable than other workplace comedies, he said that most writers and directors come from upper-class families and never had to do this kind of office work to support themselves, so their attempts to portray the work culture would come off as cartoonish and cliched. But because he had lived it, he knew how to portray it accurately.

Very much so. Engineers generally think of things in black and white. Like if a customer asked "Can your software do X?" an Engineer may likely just flat-out say "No." But a person who knows how to deal with customers may be a bit more tactful or probe a bit more with things like "Our software does it a little differently, like this" or "What is it you are trying to accomplish? George, "Kung Fu" was the name of a wildly popular '70s adventure show, starring David Carradine as a caucasian man who had been raised in a Shao-Lin temple, then sent to the US to find his surviving family. Taking place in the late 1800s, it was a chance to show martial arts against gun-toting outlaws of the wild west. EDIT: Originally, the show had been intended to star Bruce Lee, and the master was justifiably upset that they gave the lead to Carradine.

I can relate to your story about working too fast. During an evaluation I was told that I had the least amount of overtime of any one in the department, which as a programmer was unpaid. I told them that I was better at my job and more efficient then most of the others and when they can not figure something out the come to me. They could not care less, to them it meant that I did not care as much. Our time was billed out, so more time means more money, yet going over budget means pissed off clients that need time give backs and f uped projects. Bad long term management. When they started to close down the division, they naturally started laying off the best workers, including myself and kept the dummies. Eventually I started working independently and did a lot of work for there former clients. Every thing in this movie is correct.

Regarding the "inventing work" commentary - when I worked for the Forest Service one of the permanent staff in the Recreation department would plan out how much he needed to get done each week in order to retain a "good performance" rating. He had several projects in development (trail maintenance, he was trying to develop a shooting range - at a completely idiotic location on a ridgetop overlooking a resort, etc.). When he completed his goal for the week, which he usually finished on Tuesday or Wednesday, he'd then spend the rest of the week goofing off in the woods "checking up on his projects". Because there was nothing else he needed to do and he had no incentive to create more work for himself.

Mike Judge is so good at satirizing every day life. One of my favorite comedies. There's so many little details in this that are so funny. Like the answering machine scene where his ex-gf screams she's cheating on him. The answering machine shakes as she screams it, emphasizing the shrillness in her voice. But obviously an answering machine can't actually do that so you know they sat there and rigged it with a little vibrating motor just to get that effect. And realizing that makes me crack up every time I see it.

LOVE this movie. I worked in a couple places like this before leaving and only working at more modern, casual environmentally established companies. It saved my damn life. A while back though, my girlfriend bought me an Office Space boxset with an "Initech" coffee mug, a TPS report, and an actual "Jump To Conclusions" mat 😂 Think it even had a few pieces of flair in there too.

I worked at a place like this for 13 years. I would go to sleep it could hear the phone ringing. I even woke up in the middle of the night trying to answer the phone. One time I got written up because I finished 8 hours early on a 12-hour shift and did absolutely nothing for the remaining time on the shift. This movie brings back memories of working at that job. I used to take 30 to 60 calls a day. The beauty of the job is only had to work 4 days of the week because of the long hours.

Diedrich Bader, who played the long-haired next door neighbor, liked my response to one of his tweets just today!! He honestly seems like an incredibly nice guy. Fun fact: If it's a wooden door (like the one in the movie), you can avoid the static discharge by running the fingers of your hand across the wood briefly in your reach for the knob (reach above the knob, then drag your fingers down the wood of the door for an inch or two ending up with you grasping the knob) . The wood will safely dissipate the static charge.

Loved the reaction!. Vietnam flashbacks is a great description. Many people watching this film for the first time, including myself, had a PTSD type reaction. Once you get over that, it is absolutely hilarious. Mike Judge is a genius when in comes to creating archetype characters. I worked as an engineer in an office for 30 years and I experienced every demoralizing situation depicted in this film. My company didn't want the engineers talking to the customers because we couldn't wordsmith bad news and even worse, told the truth. A more true statement you will never find. It's the same concept of when fellow students get pissy at a smarty pants who gets at or near 100 on a test that was announced to be graded on a curve. If one cog in the machine is working faster, then those above the manager might expect that manager and everyone else below them to make that pace as the new normal, and give the manager more work for their team to accomplish over the same span of time. You working faster could potentially make more work for the manager and it seems that manager would prefer to coast. As Peter said, working just hard enough not to get fired.

That printer scene gets me every time - I think everyone who has ever worked at an office has memories of printers breaking down and wanting to take out their frustrations on it, so to see it filmed like a gangster execution scene was just total perfection. I love a lot of the rest of it too, but that scene is the one that makes me laugh hard every single time. You guys definitely need to see his later film Idiocracy, and then see things that go in in to how badly the marketing etc was fumbled. Both Office Space and Idiocracy were not hits in the cinema, but became really highly regarded once they hit home video. [and for a bonus WTF moment - apparently the studio wanted the gangsta rap taken out of this film!] PS - George probably ought to listen to a few Michael Bolton songs, just to really get the venom in the line "Why should I change my name, he is the one that sucks!"

If one pays attention to what he hoped to get out of the hypnotherapy session, he wondered if he could get zonked out in some way that he could just think he was fishing all day. Thus, his fulfillment of that and preference in activity is to be doing things with the fish.

One day I was supposed to work with this other guy but he was late coming in because his kid was sick or something so I had nothing to do. I just sat there for hours feeling really awkward because everyone around me was working and my monitor faced out over the whole studio so I felt like everyone could see that I wasn't working. But it's not my fault! The guy finally showed up at like 4pm and by then it was too late to actually start something.

Also, your employer’s health insurance doesn’t become invalid the moment you leave, it’s usually still active until at least the end of that month. So, several days after being fired, you’d still have insurance of your own to cover expenses that the drunk driver’s insurance didn’t. Also, to the guys mentioning he’d been drinking himself, it shows him drinking in his kitchen, and then jump cuts to him passed out in his car. We don’t know if he was still drunk from before the jump cut, or if a good amount of time had passed. (He would have been fired in the morning, and his wife probably wouldn’t have gotten home from work until about 4-6 hours after him. Enough time to process a good amount of alcohol. He’d certainly have been dead if he was in there that whole time with the car running.)

Great film, filled with jokes that only office workers will understand. I think every office has a "Milton", someone who's quiet and just wants to get their job done, but their bosses see them as baggage. The "PC load letter" scene was improvised. The actor was meant to say his bit and finish his line, but the printer itself actually jammed and showed the error message, causing the actor to improvise. Also, "PC load letter" actually means the paper tray for letter-size paper needs loading.
