The whole point of Donnie being shut up and discluded all of the time was that in Steve Buscemi's last two Coen Brothers roles, in Fargo and Miller's Crossing, he portrayed fast talking characters who never shut up, so he would always have twice as many lines as all of the other characters.

What I think is the most interesting base is the contract to Fargo. In Fargo, Steve Buscemi's character did all the talking and his sidekick bareley spoke. In This movie, he is rarely allowed to speak. For many years, I thought Blazing Saddles was the best movie of all time. Lebowski now has that high honor. Though it did not do well at all in the box office, it has become a cult classic. There is even an annual celebration where devotees gather called Lebowski Fest. Fans gather for a two night party in a bowling alley. One night is for bowling and another might is for watching the movie. The biggtest challenge of putting on thiese events is to not run out of White Russians.

Yet, if I remember correctly, the narrative device is that of the old gumshoe detective films - that the protagonist is usually in every scene driving the plot. As you mentioned, the Dude refuses to engage with the plot; a discrete discord is created because culturally we're used to this narrative frame of reference having a protagonist engaging heavily with the plot .
@jco20719 күн бұрын
On the one hand, it's a film noir from the point of view of a dude who doesn't actually care about the caper. On the other hand, it's a philosophy exposition. If you look at the Dude as Bhudda and Sam Elliott as god, we have Jesus, we have the nihilists (they believe in nothing), Donny is agnostic (he doesn't care and isn't affected by it all, but we are all affected by the circle of life), Walter is a moral absolutist (there are rules!). One of the most quotable movies of all time. It was a stroke of genius to take oldschool mystery/noir tropes and put them through the filter of modern-day California. All the twists the plot takes (Lebowski isn't actually rich, what happened to the briefcase, etc.) don't really matter because the mystery of what happened to Bunny was never important, and instead of a cast of suspicious characters it's just a bunch of weird California stereotypes.

The first time I watched "The Big Lebowski," I was expecting something closer to "Raising Arizona" so I was kind of meh on it. But, for some reason, I kept wanting to watch it again. The second time I saw it, it clicked hard and also became a favorite. I really enjoyed "O Brother..." but it's not one I go back to. I may have to give it another chance as well now that a few years have passed since I saw it. The Coens very rarely (if ever) go wrong. Sometimes their movies just have to grow on me a little.

@@jksgameshelf3378 Cohen brothers films have that effect. Most of their films dont become fully appreciated until they been out for a few years. This film included. They seem to require a certain perspective from the audience to fully grasp their tone and meaning.

Raising Arizona is the best comedy from the Coen Bro's. IMO. The Big Lebowski is great too.

It would be hard for me to call this or Raising Arizona as better than the other. They are equally great.

thank God we don't have to choose, right?

I think a similarly amazing weird movie is The Grand Budapest Hotel by Wes Anderson. I think it's even closer to this eccentricity than other Cohen films.

That one was surprising, all across the board. I'll second the reccomendation.

The mustached man is legendary actor Sam Ellott. The mustache is his trademark. In the movie Mask, he wore a t-shirt that said Free Mustache Rides so Cher took one.

I think the movie title is a play on "The Big Sleep". Edit: if you think John Goodman is menacing in this, you should watch the Coen Brothers classic Barton Fink!

Went to a Lebowskifest once. People dressed as their favorite character.... a guy wearing prison stripes with a LP necklace (a felon with a record) and a guy dressed as the earth holding an aspirin bottle with a 🚫 across it (a world of pain) were favorites.

Also, I realised how much this film had become a cult classic after seeing VW trailers shown before films at the cinema covering people attending festivals and gatherings centered around Jeff Bridge's character. Even my local bar started showing the film once a year and everyone would attend in dressing gowns and drinking white russians.

There are bars and restaurants around the world that are entirely themed around The Big Lebowski. I went to one in Reykjavík in March.

Given their reactions to Sam Elliott, they need to watch Tombstone.

"The mustache guy." I suddenly have a powerful need for them to watch "Tombstone", "Gettysburg". and "We Were Soldiers."

Since I left a long rambling comment on Patreon, I won't fully repeat it here, other than to say I really hope you watch more Coen brothers films. I think you would especially love 'Fargo' and 'Raising Arizona' (John Goodman is so good in that one and his first of many appearances in their films). Also, their film 'No Country for Old Men' is my favorite film of all time (well, for now) and it's a master class in every aspect of filmmaking. Definitely NOT a comedy, though, but so suspenseful. My ex-wife (well, the second one) and I had our birthday party at the bowling alley where they shot this film before they sadly - and stupidly - tore it down. They gave us a bowling pin for all the guest to sign that I still have.
