One of the most quotable movies of all time. It was a stroke of genius to take oldschool mystery/noir tropes and put them through the filter of modern-day California. All the twists the plot takes (Lebowski isn't actually rich, what happened to the briefcase, etc.) don't really matter because the mystery of what happened to Bunny was never important, and instead of a cast of suspicious characters it's just a bunch of weird California stereotypes.
@glawnow1959

Actually, Robert Altman took the old school mystery/noir tropes and put them through the filter of (then) modern-day California in the 1973 film "The Long Goodbye" with Elliot Gould, a major inspiration for this movie. Highly recommended!

I think the best explanation I've ever heard for this movie is something like "The plot keeps trying to happen, with exposition and plot devices being presented to The Dude, but because of his, ahem, "relaxed" personality, he is unaffected by it so things just sort of happen around him." I'm butchering it, but something like that. The plot is trying and failing to engage the protagonist.

Yet, if I remember correctly, the narrative device is that of the old gumshoe detective films - that the protagonist is usually in every scene driving the plot. As you mentioned, the Dude refuses to engage with the plot; a discrete discord is created because culturally we're used to this narrative frame of reference having a protagonist engaging heavily with the plot .
@jco207
@jco207 2 ай бұрын
On the one hand, it's a film noir from the point of view of a dude who doesn't actually care about the caper. On the other hand, it's a philosophy exposition. If you look at the Dude as Bhudda and Sam Elliott as god, we have Jesus, we have the nihilists (they believe in nothing), Donny is agnostic (he doesn't care and isn't affected by it all, but we are all affected by the circle of life), Walter is a moral absolutist (there are rules!). The "rich" Lebowski worships money and status while Bunny is a hedonist.

Maude Lebowski (Julienne Moore) is speaking with what’s called a Mid-Atlantic accent, which is an artificial accent that blends British and American accents (hence the name). It was used a lot in movies from the 1930s and ’40s to mark a character as being highly educated and/or upper class, and since it was just an auditory trope, it basically no longer exists (one character from the later seasons of _Bojack Horseman_ uses it, but that’s because she’s a parody of Hildegard Johnson (Rosalind Russell) in _His Girl Friday_ from 1940). The dream sequence with all the bowling imagery is _also_ a throwback to that era. The big dance number with dozens of women in fancy costumes was very popular in those days, and you can see the specific “camera dives between a bunch of women’s legs” shot at around the 1 minute mark of this trailer for _42nd Street_ from 1933: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3nbgYunaq-So7M

The great thing about the scene where the Dude is flying under the girls dresses is all the girls decided to pull this prank by putting fake hair in their underwear and didn't tell Jeff. So when they were shooting the scene Jeff was trying to stay in character while seeing all those girls having "massive bushes"

Two of my friends showed me this movie because they referenced it all the time and I didn't know what they were talking about. When the ferret scene happened, we had to pause the movie so I could get myself together because I absolutely lost it. One of the funniest things/most bizarre ideas for a scene I've witnessed.

Since I left a long rambling comment on Patreon, I won't fully repeat it here, other than to say I really hope you watch more Coen brothers films. I think you would especially love 'Fargo' and 'Raising Arizona' (John Goodman is so good in that one and his first of many appearances in their films). Also, their film 'No Country for Old Men' is my favorite film of all time (well, for now) and it's a master class in every aspect of filmmaking. Definitely NOT a comedy, though, but so suspenseful. My ex-wife (well, the second one) and I had our birthday party at the bowling alley where they shot this film before they sadly - and stupidly - tore it down. They gave us a bowling pin for all the guest to sign that I still have.

BTW, the short nihilist is Flea, the bassist from Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The girl who lost her toe is Aimee Mann, a really good artist from the 90s. Her "Lost in Space" album is great. She was also the singer for Til Tuesday before she went solo and did various other things. And, though no one ever seems to notice, after the visit to the doctor, the song he's jamming to... "ooh, oooh, oooh, looking out my back door." Not like that that was a coincidence. It's interesting that the chair in the door thing usually gets the biggest laughs of the whole movie.

Great reaction, y'all! I love "The Big Lebowski" and it was fun to see you experience it for the first time. For another Coen Brothers movie that I think you'll really enjoy, check out "Raising Arizona" with Nicolas Cage. It's the movie that introduced me to the Coen Brothers and is amazing. Everything about it is slightly cartoony and unhinged, a little bit magical, and full of amazing and ridiculous quotables. You will have a good time with it, guaranteed.

One of the funniest movies ever. But two points. Donny has such a small role but when he dies it really genuinely affects you. And secondly the part where Walter and The Dude hug after spreading the ashes is every profound thing you could say about friendship but with no words, one shot and just a couple of seconds of film. It's amazing when directors do so much with so little.

I think the great thing about this movie is how effortless it is. The cool, the style and the funny just flows, it doesn't feel desperate to present itself as these things, it just feels natural. A lot of media, both big and small screen fall in to this trap now, falling over itself to show itself cool or stylish.

A huge story keeps TRYING to start but The Dude is too lazy for it to happen lol. Also, I think the notepad rubbing scene is probably the funniest joke that has ever been put to film.

The whole point of Donnie being shut up and discluded all of the time was that in Steve Buscemi's last two Coen Brothers roles, in Fargo and Miller's Crossing, he portrayed fast talking characters who never shut up, so he would always have twice as many lines as all of the other characters.
