One of the most quotable movies of all time. It was a stroke of genius to take oldschool mystery/noir tropes and put them through the filter of modern-day California. All the twists the plot takes (Lebowski isn't actually rich, what happened to the briefcase, etc.) don't really matter because the mystery of what happened to Bunny was never important, and instead of a cast of suspicious characters it's just a bunch of weird California stereotypes.

Well the plot is inspired by The Big Sleep, a classic detective novel. So you could consider it a parody of the genre.
@andrewburgemeister66842 жыл бұрын
@@iantellam9970 it’s one big nihilistic satire of the genre, my favourite bit had to be The Dude trying to see what Jackie Treehorn sketched only to see it’s a dude with a big boner, literally the only “detective” work he does in the film when the rest of the movie he isn’t doing anything but gets bounced around from one bizarre situation to the next.
@nathanpapp4322 жыл бұрын
@@iantellam9970 Its more of a deconstructionist take on film noir than a parody.
I think the best explanation I've ever heard for this movie is something like "The plot keeps trying to happen, with exposition and plot devices being presented to The Dude, but because of his, ahem, "relaxed" personality, he is unaffected by it so things just sort of happen around him." I'm butchering it, but something like that. The plot is trying and failing to engage the protagonist.

Yet, if I remember correctly, the narrative device is that of the old gumshoe detective films - that the protagonist is usually in every scene driving the plot. As you mentioned, the Dude refuses to engage with the plot; a discrete discord is created because culturally we're used to this narrative frame of reference having a protagonist engaging heavily with the plot .
@jco2073 ай бұрын
On the one hand, it's a film noir from the point of view of a dude who doesn't actually care about the caper. On the other hand, it's a philosophy exposition. If you look at the Dude as Bhudda and Sam Elliott as god, we have Jesus, we have the nihilists (they believe in nothing), Donny is agnostic (he doesn't care and isn't affected by it all, but we are all affected by the circle of life), Walter is a moral absolutist (there are rules!). The "rich" Lebowski worships money and status while Bunny is a hedonist.

Maude Lebowski (Julienne Moore) is speaking with what’s called a Mid-Atlantic accent, which is an artificial accent that blends British and American accents (hence the name). It was used a lot in movies from the 1930s and ’40s to mark a character as being highly educated and/or upper class, and since it was just an auditory trope, it basically no longer exists (one character from the later seasons of _Bojack Horseman_ uses it, but that’s because she’s a parody of Hildegard Johnson (Rosalind Russell) in _His Girl Friday_ from 1940). The dream sequence with all the bowling imagery is _also_ a throwback to that era. The big dance number with dozens of women in fancy costumes was very popular in those days, and you can see the specific “camera dives between a bunch of women’s legs” shot at around the 1 minute mark of this trailer for _42nd Street_ from 1933: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3nbgYunaq-So7M

The great thing about the scene where the Dude is flying under the girls dresses is all the girls decided to pull this prank by putting fake hair in their underwear and didn't tell Jeff. So when they were shooting the scene Jeff was trying to stay in character while seeing all those girls having "massive bushes"

Def a movie you guys should revisit from time to time. There's so many little things about this film that you'll pick up on in subsequent viewings and it just gets funnier and funnier. One of the subtlest ones, but one of my favorites, is when they're at the bowling alley bar talking about how The Dude might get his johnson cut off, Donny is just sitting there in the middle, with a can of Slice. And I'm 100% positive that was intentional.

Someone rewrote this as a Shakespeare play called "Two Gentlemen of Lebowski: A Most Excellent Comedie and Tragical Romance" and it slaps. A couple of acting troupes have even performed it.

25:04...Paraquot was an industrial strength herbicide that I think was banned many many years ago (possibly in the 1990s). Maybe that's what the Dude was referring to? 🤔

Julianne Moore is so great on this. Sometimes I'll just watch the scene were The Dude first meets Maude over and over. The way she delivers her lives is amazing! And the way that the Dude is so overwhelmed by her is hysterical. And the little things in the movie that you pick up on repeated watching - like at Maudes he uses coffeemate for his White Russian.

BTW, the short nihilist is Flea, the bassist from Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The girl who lost her toe is Aimee Mann, a really good artist from the 90s. Her "Lost in Space" album is great. She was also the singer for Til Tuesday before she went solo and did various other things. And, though no one ever seems to notice, after the visit to the doctor, the song he's jamming to... "ooh, oooh, oooh, looking out my back door." Not like that that was a coincidence. It's interesting that the chair in the door thing usually gets the biggest laughs of the whole movie.

12:25 The way Maude Lebowski is talking is called a Mid Atlantic Accent. Kathryn Hepburn did it long ago. Frasier did it as well. It's almost sorta kinda British while remaining American.

Great reaction, y'all! I love "The Big Lebowski" and it was fun to see you experience it for the first time. For another Coen Brothers movie that I think you'll really enjoy, check out "Raising Arizona" with Nicolas Cage. It's the movie that introduced me to the Coen Brothers and is amazing. Everything about it is slightly cartoony and unhinged, a little bit magical, and full of amazing and ridiculous quotables. You will have a good time with it, guaranteed.
