Both my grandpas served in the Korean War. The one on the white side of my family was actually deployed, and he told me some horror stories the few times I met him when I was a child. It really messed him up and he turned out to be an awful, racist person, which really became obvious when he disowned my dad for marrying my mom because she is black. When he finally apologized and allowed my dad, sister, and me to visit, there were guns and bullets everywhere in his house and car. His paranoia about someone coming to get him was so strong he didn’t even bother to lock up the guns around two eight year olds. I’m honestly grateful they were hesitant to deploy black soldiers because my other grandpa didn’t end up with the personality-degrading PTSD.

Winston Churchill coined the phrase "Iron Curtain" at a speech he gave at a tiny college in a small town of Fulton, Missouri about 15 miles from where I am now. In honor ow WC, they created the Winston Churchill National Museum in the same town. Above the museum is a British church that survived the bombings of WWII and they dismantled it and shipped it to Fulton, Mo piece by piece and rebuilt it. I am now engaged to a Brit and she was in awe when she visited America at how large it is. Missouri is larger than England. And she was amazed this little town in rural Missouri has a national museum dedicated to a British leader and was very chuffed as we toured it together. I'm 20 years in the Air Force and we still teach about the Air Force legacy of the Berlin Airlift. My dad was also Air Force for 20 years and was in Korea and Vietnam. I was in Japan keeping Taiwan safe in the 2000's so the cold war continues.

Lenin and Stalin both hated religion, believing that only the state was soul source of importance and moral guidance. As a result Marxist/Leninist atheism was forcibly instituted in all schools. Both dictators specifically targeted Russian Orthodoxy since it was the largest religion in the country (dating back to the 10th Century). Lenin started by abolishing all private property (including church property) by degree in October 1917. Four months later in January 1918 the “Decree of Separation of Church and State, and of School and Church” was issued and enforced. Four of the Nine enforced guidelines included, 1. Removal of physical and monetary property. 2. Transfer of birth, marriage, and other private information. 3. Seizure of all religious libraries. 4. Ending of religious teaching, both private and public. Brutal crackdowns on the church carried over a year later. In the Spring and Summer 1919, 25 priests were shot, and the bishop was buried alive in Perm, Russia, while in Osa, Russia, 30 priests were murdered. Between 1917-1921, 28 Bishops and 1,200 clergymen were executed. Unfair trails, with no witnesses to defend the accused, were held. These trials were noted as being barbaric and unjust by western journalists who would sit in during the hearings. "Moderate" Soviet officials would angerly yell and curse at the accused, and sentence them to death, as was the case during the Cieplak Trial in 1923 (Jan Cieplak would have his punishment changed, and he would be exiled from the country instead. His aid though, was executed by the Soviets on the steps of a prison in St Petersburg). Under Stalin all religions were targeted including Islam. Crimean Tatars were forcibly deported in 1944. In total 7% of their population died or were killed during transport (in sealed off cattle cars) or during "resettlement" to Uzbekistan. Physical Orthodox and Catholic churches/cathedrals didn't escape during this time. Hundreds were either being demolished, looted, vandalized, or used for non religious purposes such as store houses and granaries. The 1888 Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Baku, Azerbaijan meet its end to the Soviets in 1937 when it was demolished. 10,000 parishioners of the Orthodox Church were sent to Gulags in Siberia. 106,300 clergymen were executed between 1937-1941. Stalin used the Orthodox Church to boost moral for soldiers during World War II (a majority of Russians didn't secede their faith, and secretly attended underground religious services). Strick crackdowns reduced during this short period. After the war, religious persecution ramped back up and would last until the very last years before the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. It is believed that a total of 12 million Orthodox Christians were murdered or killed by the Soviets between 1917-1987 (some sources have the number as high as 20 million).

Whenever Dave (and sadly a lot of my fellow millennials) talk about communism I want him/them to go read some history books :P Communism vs Democracies (including Republics) are not just different ideas or ways of doing things, get educated. It wasn't just by chance that every communist government in the 20th century (without exception) turned into a corrupt tyrannical government resulting in the persecution and deaths of millions of political dissidents, minorities, etc. It's what happens when group politics and ideologies take precedence over individual freedoms, and it is wrong.
