The average stay is 176 days which is above average but there is overpopulation as it is which is why there are new jails and prisons being opened continuously. It's a law, just because it happens doesnt mean its the norm, there are quite a few factors to take into consideration but you are speaking as if everyone stays in a county jail for an inordinate amount of time which simply isn't true. I majored in Criminal justice administration with a minor in criminal law and I did tours of prisons all over the country and spoke to inmates of every calliber, including life sentences. I went to Statesville in Illinois 3 separate times and county jails cannot even compare to the prisons, most people in some of those prisons do not care about anything because no matter what they are going to die there, good behavior became moot decades ago.

You can definitely go to county jail for longer than a year. My buddy was in county for 22 months on a 5 year sentence. They typically only send people to the state prison around here if it was a violent crime and their minimum for parole is 5 years.

@8:00 Typically jail is whew you will go right after being arrested and are waiting to go to court nd to be sentenced. But at the same time, if I’m not mistaken (I’ve never been to prison and the 3 times I’ve been to jail o was only there a combined 2 days and like 15 hours lol), like when you’re sentenced there is a certain way they’ll even say it whether if you’re going to prison or jail, I think anyway. Like I was watching this thing on KZbin snout this guy who does KZbin after being to prison and I think he said like if when they sentence you and they say like “You’ll be going for 36 months” that usually means prison and if they say “you’re going in for 3 years” it’s jail maybe. Now that could be completely wrong of course, and I maybe way off, but the way the guys channel I watched explained it, at least where he lives, that’s how it was. Which of course when being sentenced they’ll usually tell you whether you’re going to such n such county jail or such n such state prison. But I swear I heard like depending on how they say the sentence also could be a giveaway whether you’re going to be in s prison or jail. But again, I may be way off on that tbh. I never spent enough time locked up to know, thank goodness.

the maximum sentence in a county jail is usually not more than a year, county cops are what we call sheriffs. anything more than a year is usually punished in state prison, they have federal prisons too for crimes against federal law, like terrorism, tax evasion, kidnapping and taking the victim across state lines, that’s a federal crime for which you will do federal time. but most crimes are punished in the state penitentiary.

people wait in jail until they go to court, so it’s a mix of guilty and innocent people awaiting trial. It’s some on their way to prison, some on their way home, some serving short sentences, some waiting for court who can’t afford bail, some whose accused crime is so serious they aren’t given any bail amount but have to wait inside. I watch a lot of tv about prisons. Our prisons are for people who are serving more than 2 years sentences. Everyone in prison has been judged guilty of a crime. We have Federal and state prison systems and the laws and practices are different between them. idk much about the fed system.
