He knew he’d lost a bit of the wing, actually lost control for a second and considered ejecting but decided against it after adding power and recovering. The plume of fuel escaping from the ruptured fuel tank obscured his view and the view of the backseater (it was a 2 seat trainer) Only after landing and turning around to shake the backseater’s hand did he see the full extent.

The fuselage on a f15 acts as a lifting body, it was one of the first jets to do that. I imagine it probably wouldn't have been able to land safely without that extra lift.

Retired F15E crew chief here. The E-model is the penultimate fighter-bomber, fast and capable. I got the privilege of getting a ride in one when I was a young airman. Fucking phenomenal experience.

I was an electrician on A/B’s at Langley 76-80. Never got a ride though. Went to working on F-16’s at McDill and Kunsan. Got a ride at Kunsan and had to divert to Osan, so ended up getting two rides. F-15 was my favorite. Hope your memories are as good as mine. Well done, guy!

Hey Guys! This is the fighter plane that says, "F__k around and find out, dude". I used to work in a small office near the end of the runway in Syracuse, NY. A few times a week the Air National Guard squadron called "The Boys from Syracuse" used to take off in the late morning 3 or 4 times a week. Usually 4 F-16 "Fighting Falcons". They would take-off, get in formation, turn north, then hit the afterburners.... and they were gone out of sight in seconds, and the F-15 is even faster! Crazy.

the Pilot who lost his wing didn't know he was missing the wing until after he landed. He was going to eject but after throwing it into afterburn he was able to stop the rolling and regained control of the aircraft. He landed at twice the normal speed and almost ran out of runway. it was an Israeli, i highly suggest checking out the video to hear his account.

For anybody curious on the wing incident, it was only possible because of 3 factors. The planes massive thrust/speed capacity, large control surfaces and stabilizers, and the fact that the fuselage is a lifting body design. The body of the plane literally generates a little more lift than the wings combined. Which means when it lost the one wing it didn't throw the center of lift WAY off from the center of mass so it didn't slip into an unrecoverable spin from the other wing generating all the lift like most other planes would. But with the lifting body heavily mitigating the lift offset it still needed speed and those large control surfaces to prevent it from slipping into a spin. The large control surfaces give it A LOT of ability to counter act forces on the plane but without enough speed moving large amounts of air over the controls they wouldn't have enough force to counter act things. So all 3 factors were needed here and with any one of these missing the plane wouldn't of been able to recover and continue flying.

Late note: The F-14, F-15, and a few others generate a 30 % of their lift from the fuselage. Also, real world aggressor squadron training between F-22 Raptors and F-15 Eagles showed the Eagles kept killing F-22s in a2a and dogfights. It is also the ONLY fighter aircraft that is not in any movie.

As an indication of the power, back in 1975 a so-called Streak Eagle {carrying no munitions} took off from a base in North Dakota and from brake release on the runway it climbed to 98,000 feet in three and a half minutes. I believe that record still stands.

The F-15 really is no joke. I worked with a crew chief after he cross trained to my career field in the AF who was assigned to F-15's. Apparently we had a joint training exercise with Canada at one point that pitted F-15s against twice their number of Canadian F-18s. Initial long range missile exchange favored the Canadians taking down half the 15s. The remaining 15s, then outnumbered 4 to 1, closed in for the dog fight and utterly wrecked the 18s without losing any more planes. The 15 is a highly, highly capable plane.

The F-15 may seem small, but with a full combat load it weighs almost 70k lbs. That's an Abrams tank flying through the air! Also, although technology has advanced there's not much that's changed in aircraft design. The F-15 and F-16 are excellent air frames, which is why they've just been upgrading them with new alloy wings, sensors, weapons, radar, and weapons. Plus having a consistent manufacturing system for so long makes it exceptionally cheaper and easier to continue using or making more of. When you've got such an absolutely stellar air frame, unless there's something utterly beyond the line of technological supremacy it's better to use them for general use and have the high tech options for special circumstances or emergencies due to cost. It'd cost 4-10 times as much to use an F-22 compared to an F-15 so unless it's necessary, it's best to use the cheaper incredibly durable and heavily armed option. Plus, it doesn't use stealth because it's used as an open signal of "Hey everyone, we're here so stop whatever you're doing and back off."

Cool! I actually worked on the F-15 program in 1979 as an Engineering co-op student at McDonnell-Douglas in St. Louis Missouri. My first co-op semester I worked in the F-15 radar group. I got to go into the factory to see production, and watch them (and F-18 Hornets) fly almost every day. What an experience that was! Love your channel.

The thing about the F-15 is that it has a very wide body that is shaped so that the body also generates Iift. The aircraft has enough power to generate the speed needed to create the lift needed to stay aloft. The Eagle that landed without it's wing landed at 350 miles per hour in order to retain control. The normal landing speed is 120 miles per hour.

The airplanes blowing your mind is the same for me. I grew up close to Norfolk Naval Base. Sometimes you'd catch them practicing dogfighting at lower altitudes. That's when you realize how fast they are. My mind was also blown seeing my dad board an aircraft carrier and it sail away. It's a skyscraper on its side and somehow floats? They're fast, too? Crazy.

As TFE says, "It's never a war crime; the first time." I'd say there is at least one incrementally "better" generation of aircraft currently in production. It will be SLOW because they are EXPENSIVE to build. You won't know they're out there until they are needed (See F117 in Panama). The reason things like the F15EX are getting done is because we aren't at the point to need to risk the F22s in "everyday" missions (again, think $$$). What we're doing now doesn't really require full time stealth. It requires a fast, heavily loaded, bomb truck that can defend itself against everything currently on the market AND take over as air superiority if challenged. And there you have it.

I play golf in Utah by Hill AFB. 2 of the holes run parallel to the runway. I`ve seen these awesome planes take off and indeed, once clear of the runway they shoot straight up and it`s just awesome to see it in person. So cool how they just glide, you don`t hear the roar of the jets until they pass you.

It is actually called a Strike Eagle. It is a joint strike fighter as it can carry both A/A and A/G loadouts. It is capable of dog fights or long distance bombing raids with the addition of a fuel pod. Beautiful piece of machinery.

Not entirely correct. They did not change the name and added “strike” in the name of F-15. What I mean is, not all F-15 are “Strike Eagle”, most of them are just “Eagle”. F-15 originally was just an air superiority fighter. It is made to be the best in the air to air combat. Despite being the best in the air however, it lacks the multirole capability of the F-16. Multirole being it can be deployed in a lot more missions than just asserting air to air dominance. They soon developed a multirole variant of the F-15 called F-15E Strike Eagle. The “strike” being it is now capable of interdicting missions or bombing mission. F-15E Strike Eagle is a multirole variant of the original air superiority F-15 Eagle. Much like when you buy cars, they have sports version or sports variant.

The F-15 isn't the only fighter with a thrust to weight of greater than 1. Also, thrust had nothing to do with that missing wing F-15 still flying. It turns out that the F-15's fuselage creates enough lift that it can still fly with a missing wing. But it was also because of the Israeli pilot's skill. Still, the Eagle is one of the best fighters of all time.

That 3,300mile is called the ferry range. We started doing that during WW 2 fuel tanks full but no bombs and gun unloaded to cut drag and weight to a minimum. Then refuel in Greenland or Iceland. A longer range plane, the P-38 or P-51 could make it non-stop if they didn't run into bad weather.

The F-15 is 50 years old. The design that is. The ones they're making right now, the F-15EX Eagle II, have current US tech except for stealth. Turns out the F-15 is a strong boi, for one so fast and quick and maneuverable. Carries almost 30,000 pounds (13,400 Kgs) of weapons or external fuel, which is good because the F-22 and the F-35 are relative weaklings because of stealth. The F-15EX can "stand off" and deliver long range precision strikes with data from the sneakier F-35 in danger close.

The pilot didn’t know that one wing was missing. His wingman didn’t tell him for fear that he might crash when he over compensated for the missing wing. The manufacturer flew over to inspect the aircraft and when was told about the missing wing told them it was impossible to fly with only one wing. 😮

Speaking of technology, regular troops had night vision in the early days of Iraq/Afghanistan. Like, imagine it being 2006 and just about everyone having access to night vision. The F=15 that flew and landed with a wing missing was an Israeli F-15. The pilot realized he had lost a wing when he was on approach for landing and began making his final approach and slowing because he was finding himself making unusual maneuvering adjustments. There was also an American U.S. Female Air Force Pilot over Iraq that flew her A-10 safely back to base with 3/4 of her right wing shot off over Southern Iraq. Power, Design Redundtcy & Training was the reason the A-10 stayed in the air and landed intact. Well, intact minus 3/4 of one wing.

They used a camshaft off of the engine to block the firing mechanism while the prop was in position. However many of the props had plates on the backside to protect them just in case of a hangfire.

The F-22 is meant to replace the F-15C The F15-EX is more of a 4.5Gen than a 5th Gen fighter and would not be replaced until 6th generation are fully implemented. Also, The F-15 is what TOP GUN 2 use because it can house 2 people in its cockpit

He took my comment primarily with the F-15EX comment the last few seconds of his video. This F-15EX had some push back in Congress. But, the fleet of both the F-15 & F-18 are past their due date & stealth purposes are needed early in a conflict. However, being able to flex the muscle that a F-15EX provides, with modern technology installed at a fraction of the cost, and the jobs brought to a State/District: Will provide jobs which are a win/win situation for politicians. All the new technology & abilities that the F-15EX will have not been shared with the public yet. Test for the Jet are taking place out of Eglin Air Force Base in the Western Panhandle of Florida (near Panama City Beach). There are separate airframes NOS. 1, NOS. 3, and NOS. 4 have been delivered. Too date the F-15EX has past everything thrown at the jet. The Airforce intends to buy 104 jets, that is down from 188. COVID-19 & moving production out of South Korea to the U.S. has caused some delay. A total of 44 jets keeps the program within initial operation capability. The AF 2025 budget includes 24-48 jets with complete fulfillment of the 104 jets purchased by 2027. Indonesia has already expressed their intention to purchase the F-15EX.

Think about it for a minute. The F-15 is 50 years old and is still one of the greatest aircraft in the world. The F-22 is now 20 years old and the F-35 has been flying for 10 years. The United States has been working on the replacement for the F-22 and F-35 for years now and the 50 year old Eagle is still good enough that they are coming out with an upgraded version in the F-15EX. The F-15 EX Eagle 2 is not as stealthy as the Raptor or Lightning II but it is 45 percent less visible than the older version and is actually as stealthy as the Russian SU-57 Felon and almost as invisible as the Chinese J-20. It also carries the same weapons load (24 missiles) as 4 F-22 Raptors (6 missiles each) or 6 F-35s (4 missiles each) It also costs less than half as much to operate ($24,000 per hour verses $87,000 per hour). The United States Air Force is buying up to 144 of the Eagle 2 to replace the older F-15 A and C models in service today. The Eagle 2 may not be as invisible as the Raptor or F-35 but it can hang back 15 miles behind the Raptor or Lightning and let the stealthier aircraft do the targeting for it. It basically can shorten the sortie times and requirements for the Raptor to return to base to reload weapons.

This makes me wonder if the F-15 is going to join the B-52 and A-10 as one of those seemingly immortal aircraft designs that see generations of would be successors come and go.

@@noppornwongrassamee8941 Very likely yes. The F-15 EX will have a life span of an unheard of (for a fighter) 20,000 flight hours. Large countries like Canada and Australia are missing out by not picking some up. No other plane would serve their interests as well with its range, versatility, and longevity.... not to mention the redundancy of two engines over remote terrain/ocean.

@7:15 they actually flew it sideways. Aimed up so the engine could give it some extra vertical push. If they tried to fly it level you are right the wing that was still there would have tried to flip the plane.

I don't think the UFO sightings are new (conventional manned) air superiority fighters. The reason I don't think so, is because the F-22 is pretty new and really good and is public knowledge. I think UFO sightings are more likely to be *other* kinds of experimental military aircraft, ones that are *not* public knowledge yet. (Also some of them are little-known atmospheric phenomena, pranks, weather balloons, hallucinations, birds, kites, and so on and so forth, because some people just have more imagination than discernment.)

Fun fact we are an estimated 300 years ahead of what’s publicly known 👍🏽 that information is slowly coming out in fragments. Any craft we know of publicly would almost be considered primitive in comparison to what is actually out there.

a 747 can approach over a million pounds of weight at takeoff give or take. Or for you office gents 453,000kg The second fastest fighter I think we had was the f-4 phantom II. at mach 2.2ish.

if that plane had lost both wings even if it could stay in the air through sheer power it would be missing all roll control because of no ailerons and it would crash almost instantly. one wing it still has some roll authority so very careful and skilled piloting could be possible to fly.

The airplane must be matched to a well trained aggressive pilot. Good Airplane, good armaments , good electronics , a well trained aggressive pilot and a little luck is a winning weapons system..

Actually in most areas technology has NOT done much in the last 50 years. Other than the continual shrinking of circuits and the attendant advantages that brings, we have stagnated. No Concorde type transports, etc. We still have the same EXTREME limitations on space flight. We have actually gone backwards on energy generation systems.
