Oh man, it's a long time since I've listened to this tape and had either forgotten or not appreciated just how good it is. Great composing, orchestration and arranging whether it's the slower romantic tracks or the more funky upbeat ones, it's an absolute joy to hear it in such great quality!

I think the second track was on the Water Mountain tape. A track on Water Mountain sounded like one from this tape. As it id minor key it probably was that second track of this.
@ianmcclavin Жыл бұрын
@David Clapperton Yes, you are correct. Track 2 on this tape, called "Lofty", (no connection with the late Don Estelle's Gunner Sugden in "It Ain't Half Hot Mum!!), was also the opener for Section 2 of Water Mountain.

Sorry to say but this would have been unlikely. Most of this music was played during intermissions in the day. At night the channels closed down completely. There would either be a testcard with a long single tone or a “snowstorm” effect.

@@andrewmyers9982 I only remember these being on during the day during my very early childhood. In fact in childhood I found this image and also Ceefax a bit creepy! I literally had nightmares about them, where I would see this image or a ceefax page in a dream and feel scared and wake! I think because they were on late at night or early morning - during the witching hour?! I didn't even know what this was, I googled "little girl blackboard and clown" and it led me to this eventually! But so glad I did as I discovered great music which is an antidote to all the time online during lockdown. I only wish I could programme my TV to show this intermittently to get my teenage son off the screen for a while!

CORRECTION - This tape actually aired in August 1979 not May as the Well, All Right had lasted during the period February to August 1979 and In The Latest Fashion was the indirect replacement for Well, All Right. When BBC1 had experienced an industrial dispute during the 9 O'Clock News while In The Latest Fashion was in service in 1980, a caption aired and during this Well, All Right played against this caption. In The Latest Fashion lasted until Sunflower replaced it in October 1982.
@ianmcclavin6 жыл бұрын
No Christopher. In The Latest Fashion WAS around in May, alongside Well All Right, Flying High disappeared in May for about 6 weeks, and this tape took it's place. Flying High then came back in July, and We'll All Right disappeared shortly afterwards. But this tape was definitely around in May '79, I have definite recollections of ITLF and Well All Right being on together.
@stuartharris21655 жыл бұрын
@@ianmcclavin You are correct, this tape debuted on the 29/05/79 and lasted until 20/07/82. Although Sunflower was the next new tape starting life on 30/09/82, actually Trolley Song returned after an 8 month absence on 05/08/82.
@ianmcclavin5 жыл бұрын
@@stuartharris2165 Yes, all three tapes, Well All Right, Flying High and ITLF were good ones. I felt it was a crying shame that Well All Right only lasted 6 months though.
@stuartharris21655 жыл бұрын
@@ianmcclavin Well All Right was an interesting tape, it was a Mozart Edition publisher tape and a damn good one at that, I can only assume that there may have been a problem with the tape. Publisher tapes had not gone down well in the past, The Poacher (Wilson Edition) and Serenade Of Old English Melodies (BVF) lasted a matter of weeks and the original version of Mini Bataille (Eurobeat) lasted 2 days, but this was very unusual for a Mozart Edition tape.
@ianmcclavin5 жыл бұрын
@@stuartharris2165 Flying High was also a Mozart Edition publisher tape. It was unusual to allocate two tapes from the same publisher to the same channel, so perhaps the desire to withdraw one was the catalyst here. It's interesting to note that at the same time on BBC2, two non-publisher tapes, the "Barry White" tape (to give it its colloquial name), and To Break a Record. The latter was withdrawn at the same time as "Well All Right," but ironically re-emerged on BBC1 some 5 months later, in January 1980. Publisher tapes weren't always short-lived, Mozart's "Villa Vista" (BBC1), and "Victorian Drawing Room" (BBC2) and BVF - Anglo Continental's Finally Swing Time (BBC1) and El Camino (BBC2) were in situ for about 19 months in the period immediately preceding this, and were quite popular.

There is a real time recording of an old BBC1 weekday daytime programming, continuity and trade test transmission from 1980, and at 12.30pm they went to a trade test transmission starting with Track 8 - Sunflower before they went for the BBC Midday News at 12.45pm. Those were the days.
@dvidclapperton2 жыл бұрын
Track 5 sounds quite similar to Sunflower 8 in part.
@dvidclapperton2 жыл бұрын
That video including Potters Wheel and continuity in 1980, it sounds very authentic with the music in mono during the trade test transmission compared with this video. And you can hardly notice that it's a grey rhombus box with BBC 1 covering over the [B][B][C] 2 COLOUR on that video. The further away you are when viewing it, the less noticeable it is.

Yes, there was a third track called "Sunflower" also, on the Trevor Lyttleton tape "Tina," which debuted on BBC2 in 1987. Again, totally different to the other two "Sunflowers!!" I always thought that if Tina had been around 5 years earlier, it would have made a good third "Falklands" tape, as it contained 100% "more restful material," which was the required criteria for the 2 Falklands tapes. Indeed, Tina did contain 1 track previously used on Mon Bijoux.
