Just cried at the final statement of this Vlog. That is why I am doing it and it articulates so beautifully what I couldn't articulate to an ex husband who couldn't understand why and lost faith in my contribution to our family. thank you Tara. Sending it to my lovely supervisor too.

Thank you for this vlog! I am 42, and I LOVE my Ph.D. program. And yes, I am probably more appreciative of this journey than I would have been in my twenties. This is definitely not a midlife crisis. I would call it a midlife enlightenment.

I completely agree. I finished mine in my early 50's and it has been an amazing experience.

The fact that you are the only person on KZbin discussing the topic of pursuing doctoral programs as a mid-life adult is both a disappointing statement about how our society discriminates by age and also reaffirms how much of an authority on higher learning you are. Thank you.

Thank you for this and all your vlogsTara. I am forever talking about your work as a support during this often lonely process. I Started my PhD in Clinical work at 57. A black woman from the Caribbean and an immigrant to America. A unicorn for sure but with the firm belief that my contribution to knowledge will be an important one in the lives of children coping with exposure to domestic violence. I am gathering my data at this point and looking forward to it analysis. I plan to stay the course towards becoming a professor one day and this vlog has truly helped. Thanks for sharing about the 91 year old graduate. I am so inspired and encouraged right now. Wishing you all the best for 2019🙏🏽❤

I am so inspired!!!! I hope to meet you one day!!!! I would like to link up as I work in the Central Desert of Australia and your topic is so relevant. My PhD reflects a movement I was part of in this region. My email is mura0079@flinders.edu.au - I hope we can connect!!! Kind regards, Melanie,

It's tricky because the PhD applications process expects you to be coming right from undergrad (or masters), not from decades in the workforce.

And maybe the "late-life PhD" at some point? The choice between doing interesting and useful research or bingo night at the senior center isn't a difficult one. Happy New Year.

Cheers Tara for this vlog! Hopefully I will be starting my PhD experience this year at Flinders and at the age of 45! Third time lucky I am hoping. And this time I feel that I am better equipped and yes motivated to start something as challenging as this. Mind you, I am also working on a short book about studying at Uni with a Mental Illness, and reading Theoretical Times! All will be revealed at the end of January. Happy New Year!

Perfect blog- this one picks up threads from your other blogs (that I have put into action). I hope universities value older PHD students.

Hi, Great video as always. I am 55 and pursuing my practice based phd here in the uk. I used to be a psychiatric nurse, however my passion is my painting, and I am extremely grateful to be given the opportunity. It is now July.2024 I hopefully qualify in January 2025. I wish to become an academic/lecturer. I understand that employment competition is strong, and so I am concerned, however, I do believe I have an advantage over a younger person because of my experience of life . I also understand employers may prefer a more mature person, especially teaching within the arts.
