Do you want to be more 'productive'? Do you waste time? Do you think the problems with your thesis are caused by your lack of productivity? You may be wrong. You may be right. But let's think about your mornings. Let's assess what you ARE doing, and what you could be doing. Then the choices are yours to make.

Fantastic Tara - I thank you so much. I just compared your work space - a table with a computer and a coffee cup - with my so-called workspace. Mine has stacks of books, index cards and a pile of knitwear that has become a cat bed. Time to oust the cat and reclaim my desk, as a first step towards more productive PhD days. One thing I also find helpful to do the night before is to sort out my lunch for the following day. Even if I am going to be working at home, I often make my lunch the night before.

Dear Tara, thank you so much for one of the best recommandations ever - my mornings are now much more productive AND interesting (I am one of those Mid-Life PhD students). Writing is now part of my daily routine - such a relief and a fuel for motivation !! Warm greetings from Paris, France !

That is not a morning, that's basically a night shift. As much as I appreciate and find value in a lot of content in this channel, I do worry that it promotes a ridiculous amount of overwork. Having written my own thesis while working full time in the last 18 months under enormous pressure, by only allowing myself to sleep for 3 hours a night, thereby ruining my health, several friendships, and only by sheer luck not causing severe traffic accidents, I can only hope that this is meant to be just a sleeping pattern that aims to maximise the quiet and calm of the night, but is actually made possible by a very early bedtime.

Inspirational but I don't normally sleep until midnight or 1am so can't imagine getting up at 2am. That is actually the night time! But I am a morning person and like to be up and at it as early as possible.

Even aware that I used this video to procrastinate while doing/eating my meal, doing laundry (that I haven't planned), doing my hair (that I got the idea from the beginning of the video because I realize that "becoming -space where my public name as researcher goes" is something important too embodied my "persona" as an academic and a researcher and as a way to not let me go in to chaos and complaint that I do this because I'm a Ph.D. student. Ok, I'm procrastinating again but the reason I come here to write this post was this: Tara and Jocko Willink have a pretty close mindset when it comes to achieving goals. Even if one is a S.E.A.L and other a dean/academic. Some things are universal and even if your personality and views about the world or theories are different how to get things done seems to be the same for (almost) all.

Hi Tara, thank you very much for sharing your experience! May you tell what is the best hour to read ? When I get up I am a little bit sleepy. So, according to what you said, writing is a great option. But, what about reading? I would really appreciate your answer!

This vlog should be called 'Nights' not 'Mornings'. If you get up at 2 or 3 am to work then you are putting yourself at risk of early onset alzheimer's, nervous breakdown, and breast cancer. Not much use having a career or PhD when you make yourself ill. Hope you have changed your habits since making this vlog. Good luck and best wishes.

Oh Veronique - I'm doing fine - but thanks for your kind commentary. I exercise 2.5 hours a day, I write and read every day - and the higher education system requires an intense workrate. I also have the gift of two fantastically healthy parents in their 90s - who have always got up incredibly early. And a wonderful brother who does the same - and just retired at 67. As you know - there is no singular causality with Alzheimer's. The best prediction is - in fact - getting older. My mornings bring me joy and so much happiness and insight and light. I would not continue to be working without the joy of these mornings. As as you know - mental stimulation is pretty important to health :) As to a nervous breakdown - no chance. As to breast cancer - as a woman who has not had children, my rate will be higher, but I take good preventative care of myself. One variable does not a diagnosis make :) Take care and thank you for your kindness. txxx

@@officeofgraduateresearchfl9343 Hello Tara. It is so lovely to hear from you. I am a lifelong insomniac and I am up at 2 am often but it wrecks my health and my thinking but I guess 'one man's meat is another man's poison.' I love your vlog. I don't always agree with you on everything but you are always very interesting! I am an older PhD student, struggling quite a bit but I reckon as long as I stick with it then I cannot fail. Thanks for all your videos which cheer me up ! Like the daleks too. xx
