If so, she may have been able to save them all. I noticed that when shots rang out, she immediately backed away. Which I realize would be a natural reaction, to save herself. But unless I'm missing something, and I'm right about that shield, she possibly made a huge tactical mistake. If for nothing else, to get that shield in front of her to shield herself. It's a tragedy no matter what, and I feel sorry for that officer's family. He seemed to be a good dude.

I'm not some Internet professional, but even I know that kicking the door in was a bad idea there... The man suffers from ptsd, which means loud noises (like a door being breached) can trigger an episode. That's likely what happened and why he opened fire. I've seen S.W.A.T teams take upwards of 6hrs before resorting to force when it comes to singular targets or hostage situations. The guy wasn't a threat until they cornered him and continued to pressure him. Their best move would've been to fall back when they realised he was barricaded. People who are mentally ill can still be talked out of shitty situations... If he had just tried to reach him on a human level like before, perhaps they would've caught a flurry of words instead of bullets.

As an ER nurse I see all types of psych cases show up to the ER and all types of cops showing up with such individuals. You get cops that clearly think they are above the law or are on power-trips or believe themselves to be something they are not while wearing that badge and carrying that gun. You get psych patients who are not really mental cases, rather people who just need a bit of love or affection or self-respect or at the risk of seeming insensitive, people that are lazy and only find excuses not to assume responsibility in life and carry their own weight and only seek attention and make themselves put to be a victim of life and society. You also get good cops, kind hearted, humble and seemingly there to help people and who have picked their profession with a ernest and sincere heart with sincere intentions....and you also get spych cases who are real psych cases, in the sense that these people are really living in a different reality and they will need all of the supervision in the world not be a threat to themselves and other people because there is psychotic, violent, harmful intentions existing within them. At the end of the day, you hope that good prevails in all sectors of life and in people's heart and minds. My condolences goes out to the family and loved ones of this seemingly good officer trying to do his job and putting his life of the line. I myself have been attacked several times at the hospital by psych patients trying to viciously harm me, sadly, I where no badge or carry no gun and my only job is to care for these people without the threat of wanting to hurt them or to seem like a threat to them as sometimes cops do given that they have an assertive and authoritarian presence carrying a gun and hurling orders at them.

Miriam De Jesus I'm a 23 yr Afghanistan War Army retiree, I'll weigh in according to my experience with the military and VA. They provide counseling free of charge even if not diagnosed with PTSD but counseling isn't enough. Sometimes mandatory hospitalization is a better option to truly get to the core of the matter and treatment. Unfortunately if you are diagnosed they give scripts and basically you are left on your own. There isn't a one size fits all approach to actually helping. VA and the military don't really know how to handle PTSD other than pay you some money, provide counseling and prescription drugs, again that's a one size fits all scheme. He was obviously an extreme case, don't know if he was self medicating (illicit drugs or alcohol) which helps for a moment (or so we feel) with some symptoms but not the root cause or rehabilitation. There were perhaps two great lives lost in that incident. We will never know if he could have been helped using different tactics. It's a shame how they turn their backs on us and say "Man up, deal with it!" Now multiple families are hurting even those of the survivors; they now may have PTSD. Vicious cycle 😥

As a fellow veteran of war with PTSD I help veterans I'm very sorry it turned out this way the problem is a lot of veterans don't think they need help and they really do. There's so much stuff veterans we Veterans hold in years without talking or speaking to anyone about what happened overseas they can eat you up that's why I'm trying to help veterans myself if they don't want help there's nothing you can do but unfortunately this happens

While in basic training, my flt mate told me about his uncle that was taking care of him. He ended up having a vietnam flashback and put a gun up to my flt mates head (he was 8-10) years old. And his uncle started yelling “you wont get me you Vietcong bastards, i have one your guys ill fucking kill him” while holding the gun to his head only to point it to his own and he killed himself in frint of my flt mate. He told me he called his dad after to pick him up cuz uncle tommy wasnt taking care of him anymore. His father asked why and he just came to pick him up only to see his brother with a loaded gun in his hand and a hole in his head. As a child that must be fucked to see but i cant also imagine what his uncle was going thru to do something like that. I can only pray and wish the best for those who need the help🙏🏾

As tragic as this Incident was/is, there are also very positive messages and images depicting, for example, Empathy, Compassion, 100% Bravery and Selflessness by these Amazing Law Enforcement Officers. It also calls attention to the struggles and suffering of those that are Mentally Ill, to include Veterans who suffer from PTSD. I’d like to think that this shooter or even his Partner had no idea how much help he needed and I’m sorry this obviously was not known before it was too late. Going Forward, I hope all of the LEOs 👮♀️👮♂️👮♂️👮♂️who survived have healed in every way…..RIP🙏🏽😇 to the Officer 👮♂️Who Lost His Life. My Condolences to his Wife and Other Family Members.

I think about that a lot when I see war action documentaries, some of those guys were so young, just boys, really, to be exposed to what they saw and did. To be fighting and have your buddy right next to you be shot and die in your arms, has to be gut-wrenching! My heart goes out to them all and we thank them for their service and hope everyone realizes what they did for their Country, and for every one of us! But the same can be said for those here at home in authority, who try to keep the law and peace intact and are involved in battles they shouldn't have to be in, but are! Thanks to them also.
