@@martharobinson4072 Very true but i get why that comment was made, we have seen situations where officers dealing with someone who's mentally ill, vulnerable or unstable, engage them with hostility which makes that subject fearful which ends up in a lawsuit or a death at the end of it. The way this officer handled this situation is how everyone officer should deal with someone in that state unless they prove to be a threat. People in those situations are not thinking clearly or rational like you , so you have to handle them with kid gloves, a little bit of understanding can go a long way to walking someone back from the brink of whatever it is

@bigben1302
@bigben1302 3 жыл бұрын
@@mustafa-cx2fg There wasn't enough to warrant an investigation. Our runaway didn't give statement of clear wrongdoing by caretakers and based on interactions seemed to have the mentality of a child, a child that had an argument with someone over her and ran away as a result. The young woman seemed free of fear, clean, and had no obvious signs of physical or mental trauma. I'll admit, it might have been worth the responding officer asking her a few questions, but she didn't give an abused, fearful vibe. I really don't think she would have tripped any officers instincts and a patrol officer doesn't have the ability to invest into a random investigation willy-nilly, especially without outside indicators. Admittedly this is just my take on it based on modern requirments, but with resources for all departments stretched thin you can't pour unwarranted time into something that isn't clearly justified. All patrol officers nowadays have to be extremely time conscious if they're to meet their community's service needs. Lol, sorry for the overlong explanation. 😆Cheers. 👍

In some situations years ago they would put them in a state mental hospital but now those are closed. The staff can not hold her down to keep her home. You can’t lock them in a home as it’s unsafe say for fire and it’s illegal. Some companies allow a staff to follow the client until say cops arrive. Sometimes staff are only allowed to call for help but not follow. Varies depending on companies protocol. Sometimes they get 1 on 1 staff too and that person can follow them to help insure safety even if from a distance.

@@sons_of_god1306 I agree with everything except the part about being in a locked house. I work in a group home setting and all doors leading outside lock. @sons_of_god1306
@sons_of_god1306 3 жыл бұрын
@@Triggadan restraints in this situation would not be protocol is what I meant. Restraints would be used more if she posed a threat to herself or others and walking out the door isn’t hurting anyone unless she’s standing in the middle of a highway in rush hour traffic and yes you have to be trained to use restraints. I’m not sure how many have to be present to use restraints as years ago one person alone could do so. Maybe if you are talking about hold techniques vs an actual strap of some sort to hold them down is probably where the differences is on this.

Imagine living in a place where your every move is watched and dictated for you. You’re told what to eat and when to eat it, what to wear, what you can own, who you can interact with, whether you can work and where you work. You have to get permission to go anywhere, and the answer is often “no”. You’re treated like a child, assumed to be intrinsically incompetent. You don’t just have a curfew, you have a bedtime. And if you punch the wall or something, then it’s likely that 5 staff members will pile on top of you and pin you to the floor where you may or may not survive being suffocated when someone sits on your chest. Or they may call the police to pepper spray you. Or shoot you. Yeah, all of that has happened to group home residents. Oh and by the way, take these 6 major antipsychotic medications, yes we know you’re not psychotic, we just want to keep you nice and docile and tranquilized. You feel like a zombie? Too bad. Try to complain and who will the authorities believe? The crazy mental patient? Or the long suffering staff who can assure everyone you’re just being manipulative. To me it’s completely understandable why this woman ran away from the group home as group homes tend to be mini-institutions. When you live in one, you don’t get to live your own life, you don’t get to make your own decisions, you’re absolutely at the mercy of people who say they’re “helping” you but are actually treating you like a 5 year old child who’s no longer cute enough to care about much. Is it any wonder she hates living there? Most people, living in most group homes, hate living there as there’s usually this fundamental power difference between the residents and the staff. The people sent there are sent there for simply existing, not because they committed a crime or something, but the way they get treated by the staff, to them it’s like being sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole

Please be a cop! The world needs more cops like this! Im not an ACAB person, but I do recognize serious issues with the policing in america. Half of all people killed by police have disabilities. Just you understanding that people with disabilities need a certain way of being handled makes you a great canidate. Cops just need to learn to 1. recognize disabilities and 2. how to approach those with different disabilities. As someone with disabilities dealing with police is extremely stressful. For instance I just cant jump out of the car- im a wheelchair user. If i am ordered out of the car Im going to have to throw myself out of the car and onto the ground just to avoid being shot. Arguing with police does not end well. Im also hearing impaired so my "non-compliance" is more likely me not being able to HEAR the directions. I also have autism so my reactions to things might not be normal. Both my parents who are deaf have always been terrified of the police. Too many good deaf folk are killed because officers arent trained to deal with that situation. Lots of deaf people have stickers on their cars and papers on their dash trying to tell any law enforcement that they ARE DEAF and not to shoot. You also cant use sign language while handcuffed. They physically take our voices away. Its sad that I and many others with disabilites are scared of the people meant to protect us. I wont get into race, I think we all have heard about that. Most people just havent heard of the injustice to the disabled. Weve had to call the cops ourselves due to a literal stabbing in our neighborhood and even that was incredibly stressful. So please follow your dreams and help change law enforcement, even if its just you 💚

Thank you for treating her with so much respect and compassion. I worked in mental health and every individual I worked with told me that all they ever want is to be heard, and treated with respect and care/compassion, not like they are scary or awful. Meds are challenging to live with too, they have tons of side effects that cause people to stop them, the abrupt stopping of them can cause a lot of issues. It’s a huge catch 22. This would be an excellent training video or even better have in person training by this officer on how to handle this situation correctly.
