Go to 11mins 53sec for my masterclass on how to spoil a romantic dinner for 2 at the incredible Old Stamp House in Ambleside.
As you can see I fell in love with the Lake District, and by day 5 had delusions of becoming a farmer, so tried my hand at sheep herding! On the cycling front I took on Kirkstone Pass from both sides, and had a little KOM attempt on Red Bank near Grasmere. I also provide a

Wow! I swear they are the couple I recently came across cycling around lake windermere, going up a 15% climb, on those very same bikes like they were jus popping out to the shops. said hi to them as we were whizzing down, they werent out of breath, smiling, very friendly people. Truth is they put me to shame. it was my first time bikepacking in the lakes, I had to walk up what would become their descent and it was less at 11%. I was in total awe, they must b in their 70s. Big respect to you for stopping and checking on other cyclists felt alot of good karma amongst cyclists whist I was up there

Wow ! That’s a coincidence 👌. And for sure the lady seemed very fit indeed 💯. Not surprised you struggled with the steep inclines - given bikepacking entails so much extra weight to carry. Makes a massive difference. Agreed the Lake District folk are lovely to cyclists - including the drivers. I think it’s a shared appreciation of outdoor activities and taking on the steep gradients (whether walking, running or cycling… or even driving ! ) 😊

Made me realise how I have got used to the roads here, I had my eyes peeking through closed hands whilst you was riding up the country lanes 😬 So lovely to stop for that lady 🙏🏻 On a separate note, Jayne is amazing. If I was being filmed whilst on a beautiful meal, ( that desert looked amazing), the phone would be put in a dark place where the sun doesn’t shine !!!!

The trio of sheep out-sprinting you for the prime set the bar high indeed for the rest of the video! What magnificent roads in the Lake district, and what considerate drivers! The evidence suggests that, were those roads here in the Pacific Northwest, we would find ourselves leaping for the walls as every other oncoming, and following, car careens madly down the road towards us, music blaring, and the air blue with a salty combination of oily exhaust and streams of epithets that would shame a sailor... Even the stone walls bordering the picturesque roads seem to have thoughtfully cushioned themselves with thick moss, should you fall into them... But Phill... breaking out a video camera at a romantic dinner is the proverbial knife in the back of any romantic mood, no matter how tempting it was to document the impossibly tiny portions! Once again, Jayne remains the epitome of grace, poise, and dignity! Awesome ride, Sir!
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy

Thanks Rob 🙏 - and for sure you called that right 💯 Jayne is indeed the epitome of grace, poise, dignity and her superpower calm! Am very lucky. The drivers in the Lakes and Yorkshire were super considerate - the best I’ve encountered (I guess thats in part because the cars find it hard enough to struggle up the climbs ! ). And good spot Sir! I hadn’t realised the good folk of Ambleside had lined their stone walls with moss to protect the cyclist 🤣 I’ll be back to out-sprint the sheep by the way - I’ll work on my 10 sec power 😁

It always amazes me how 10% can feel quite steep at times, but when you're riding a 16% and hit a 10% patch it feels like it's flat. :D

I was thinking exactly the same today on my Chilterns Ride, Daren 💯 - I guess that when it’s super steep the body goes into overdrive, and the nervous system is ramped up, and then when a lesser gradient pops up, it’s almost like a mini recovery! #broscience 😅

Great video, Phill. You attack, with relish, climbs that most locals dread. I've started using some of your 'Phill-isms' at home. The wife shakes her head and just tuts now when i finish my morning porridge and say, 'that was emotional' (i actually have a scale: emotional, epic, biblical, extra-terrestrial. lol). I also manage to get in 'the level of concern is high' on many an occasion. ;))) I was shaking my head in amusement when you were filming your romantic dinner with Jane. Cheers Wayne - as always massively appreciated. And I’ve loved my tubeless - continental 5000. But I get them professionally fitted, and also they use a high quality tubeless glue / mixture inside. Where I’ve once had trouble is post it coming back from the repair shop who fixed it post crash - the valves were not quite right and the seal along the rear tyre vs the rim was off also. So I had a couple of flats (not punctures) as a result. All resolved when I took it back to Bespoke. I saw x2 tubeless punctures on todays Sportive - so not infallible - but could be down to the fitting. I don’t think the Peleton use tubeless

Cheers Pete - thats massively appreciated! 🙏 Segment naming may figure in the future 💯 . I released a video in Feb titles Zwift Trainer Difficulty vs Real Life - where I explain why I use 100% TD in order to replicate a compact and 32 on the rear in real life. So number one tip is select a trainer difficulty that will see you run out of gearing around the same time you would run out on a steep climb in real life. Tip 2 is in my early June video, Training for the Steep Climbs - and it’s ride up and down the Radio Tower for hill repeats - practising seated vs standing - with gearing that feels realistic vs real life (e.g. I can’t spin up a climb with gradient 12-16% - so have to grind 65-75rpm seated or stand.
