The song slowly gets more stressful as Mr. Oshiro can only watch in horror as one of his first guests in years cleans up his mess. He is clinging to that hope that a nice room will make Madeline’s stay good but is slowly wound up like a spring throughout the level. Once Madeline says the room is nice, he starts winding down. Good thing too, cause he was reaching the breaking point. Would have been as easy as breaking a mirror to set him off...

I know I'm really REALLY late to the party, only recently hearing about Celeste, but I wanted to say that with a bit of education in music(especially classical and baroque.), that this piece is NOT simple. You've got a melodic piano, a theremin, BACH STYLE POLYPHONICS, a crazy, unrestrained drum beat, and expressive synths, in a single piece. The leitmotif elements are also wonderful and rather nuanced, too! This is obviously a labor of love. People only produce this kind of work when they're inspired and care about what they're doing deeply.

Shin_Rekkoha Octopath’s is also really gorgeous, but Celeste, having significantly fewer tracks and being nominated for Best Music regardless...doesn’t that say something? You can have a game with twenty amazing songs and none of them are less compelling than the others, or a game with over 200 songs, and it only gets nominated for a category because of about 25. Same goes for films, or television shows. Celeste doesn’t skip a beat. The way you put it, Octopath spends most of its soundtrack lagging behind and waiting for the right time to stab you with a powerful song. Sure, the contrast makes it more evocative, but wouldn’t that make it a lacking experience musically?

I was thinking the same. If you've ever played Monkey Island 2, it's got the Woodtick theme, a dynamic track that took so long to edit but whose result was mindblowing at the time. I suppose this track uses similar effects?
@Nat_the_Chicken2 жыл бұрын
@@arvindhmani06 If you mean that one game that used a specialized system to just kind of come up with a series of notes to transition from one theme to another, I don't think this is anywhere near as sophisticated in its implementation, it just uses crossfades from one part to the next. I was mainly talking about how the theme is specifically composed around those transitions (or rather how it takes advantage of them to build and layer and grow to its climax), and how well they're integrated into this section of the game, with its various tidying goals that each increase the intensity of the track as Mr. Oshiro gets more and more anxious. Monkey Island 2 put tons of work and thought and skill into its musical transitions and how it bridged from one thing to the next, whereas Celeste tends to kind of plan the music and the game around those transitions so they feel more natural without the need for so much effort, like meeting two sections in the middle. If you're interested in the specific systems behind this game's music, though, it uses a program called FMOD which is free for personal use, and the devs/composer were kind enough to make the entire project freely available for anyone to download. FMOD is a little tricky to use in my experience, but even just examining the audio files the project uses is a pretty interesting endeavor.

I'm coming back to this track years later because I believe I never truly did justice to what I believe now is my most favorite song in Celeste. Lena Raine _masterfully_ crafts the build-up in the level themes of Celeste to help reflect the situation, but Scattered and Lost shines even above that, because it manages to portray that dynamic build-up and complexity with not just your playing of the level, but also while referring it to a completely different character than the player character, and actively lets you know what's going on with Oshiro. In short, the song represents Oshiro's growing anxiety through the level. It starts of simple, with just a piano melody and a shaker, but even then it's hard to keep track of. Lena constantly plays with the key signature and rhythms to make you feel ever-so-slightly like there's something off with this place, and it ever so gradually builds up that tension. Oh, you cleaned a part of the hotel, but now the level's gotten harder, there's an 8-bit synth dancing around your head that sometimes syncs up with the piano melody but often strays, and there's a ghostly synth floating around that like an observer. Then you get hit with the blaring saw synth, which really hammers a sudden jump in tension. Finally once everything's combined together, you get the notion that this should all be making sense and at its core it does the song is beautiful, but if you try to focus on one thing everything quickly becomes cluttered. Your heart is pumping and the level's even harder as you're trying to race through it, not fully understanding what's going on. The entire time this confusion is building up, Madeline's... mostly fine. A bit confused and annoyed at Oshiro, and the level's getting harder yes, but it's certainly not this dramatic. That's because again the melody isn't focused on Madeline. The entire time Ohsiro's feeling more and more stressed about how you're cleaning up for him and how he can't do his job right, about how his hotel's going to go out of business and he's going to lose the only customer he thinks he had any chance selling to. And because the music is reflecting that, you start to feeling that growing tension with him, knowing subconsciously that this is not going to end well. You may not know what it represents, you may not even be necessarily thinking about Oshiro, but you know something's going horribly wrong. ...Then we take a step back. It's not actually portrayed in this music video because it just keeps going, but at 3:24 there's a break in the music. The previous section keeps looping until you get to the presidential suite, and in there you actually only hear the Badeline's theme portion of Reflections. Everything should be feeling at least somewhat fine, right? But that tension's still there, it's never resolved and is left in suspension until finally Badeline berates Oshiro and finally he transforms. _That's_ when we finally get our break in tension, but it's not some big crash or a relaxed finish, it's a drive of anger that keeps going. With a huge and complex arrangement of percussion we're suddenly thrown into a bossfight, with constant drum breakdowns. The different melodies that made everything confusing to listen to suddenly work together to scream at you one thing: _Run._ The confusion is gone, and narratively it makes sense. Oshiro's emotions are no longer complex, and no longer are we in the dark about his mindset. Instead of a cluttered mess of being unable to think of what to do and worry he's losing his customer, all of Oshiro's emotion is pointed towards anger, and letting loose on us. 4:04 works so well because it keeps the song going but also fully pulls back the curtain to show us the underlying problem beneath it all, prominently displaying Oshiro's theme to both give us another break in the tension for our climax, and to provide another shorter but terrifying build-up as we run from it. The song that was a frail, anxious melody that layered itself into a mental breakdown sandwich is held in the air for just one cutscene, and just like with how Oshiro unfairly takes his anger out on Madeline, the entire song crashes down into a roaring wave of anger during the climax. And that, is why I think it's the greatest song in Celeste.

By far my favorite track in the OST, the way it slowly builds to the climax at 3:25 with wild drumming and combining Spirit of Hospitality with the main melody is nothing short of perfection. That tenuous piano is just enough to keep you on the edge of comfortable and wary, and then that building synth riff begins kicking in around 1:24, as you and Madeline start to realize that there's definitely something awry here. I think here and there you can hear Mr. Oshiro trying to reassert some order and hospitality, but he too starts getting lost in the clutter.

This game recently came free with Xbox gold and I decided to check it out. I didn’t really have a background with platformers so I decided “why not?” I sat down and played it. I finished it that night. The first playthrough of this game was the one of the best 7 and a half hours of my life. To everyone who made this game, I show my deepest appreciation for this masterpiece of a game. Celeste hits every aspect of a game out of the park. The narrative was beautiful. I’m not the one to call a story beautiful, but there’s no other way to put it. The entire narrative of the story, characters, and location/atmosphere is something I’ll never forget. Then there’s gameplay. When it comes to 2D platfotmers, I personally think think this is a rare sparkling gem. The simple dash allowed for so much creativity with how you maneuver. Every chapter has its own unique and fun gimmick as well which propelled the platforming through the roof. I can’t put it into words. It was amazing. Then there’s music. This is where many games hit for me. And Lena, you hit me hard. Every track that accompanies the game isn’t simple background music, it is the game. This OST may be my favorite of all time. There’s that special passion and spark you can find in Indie devs that you don’t seem to find in some AAA devs. Throughout the game I could feel all the effort and passion that was put in, especially in this OST. Some of my favorite video game tracks of all time are in Celeste, and I’ll never forget anything I’ve learned and experienced from Celeste. Thank Lena, and everyone who made and shaped this game.

This song when you are doing the golden strawberry on chapter three is a spiritual experience The buildup throughout the level perfectly goes hand in hand with both what mr oshiro is feeling and what you as the player is feeling its incredible. The anxiety inducing nature of the golden strawberries goes perfectly with this song. Easily my favorite Celeste song and also probably my favorite song in general
@iamtheboom64902 жыл бұрын
This is the track that stuck with me. The low-stakes piano and calming aura at the start gets swiftly drowned out by added effects and a nice sounding, yet menacing synth, which gets even more anxiety enducing with the drums added during the boss fight with Mr. Oshiro. This is objectively the best song in the entire game.

I must say this was the track in the game that let me know that this was a OST a step above most everything else. All the other tracks are still phenomonal but I felt so much more compelled to go through levels not only for sake of progression but to hear more of the song naturally open up. My only hope is that more games take this ideology, I can't wait to see what future works you have planned!

This track is golden. It strikes this incredible mix of making it feel like you're getting somewhere, and making progress, but you can hear Mr. Oshiro's anxiety building with each shift of the track.
