There´s been more written about 40k than any other franchise. So to explain a character you might first have to explain their origin, or a subfaction, or an event that led to the creation of said subfaction. 40k fans have this timeline where everything (mostly) fits in. But it becomes hard to explain to the uninitiated because a story can have multiple starts and endings. You could simply say "it´s a spaceship" but that´s not really true because to understand what it really is means you need to know what happened fifteen thousand years earlier.

Shout out to Cameron to keeping his explanation of Abaddon the Despoiler to under ten minutes. Lord knows trying to give any kind of surface level explanation of anything 40K lore wise is... a challenge. Key word salad. Proper nouns on proper nouns, each with a wiki full of rabbit holes self justifying one another. Yeah, that snake ate it's own tale decades ago and never stopped. I legit burst out laughing when he starting off by explaining the the nature of reality. Because yes. I felt that one. Warhammer is so dumb. I love that about it.

I don't normally dive into properties that have too much established lore because it hurts my brain (part of why I don't read the hobbits, trying to come to grips with the millennia of back-story), and I think Warhammer is the one property that is enticing, but gives me migraines just contemplating
@TevorTheThird2 жыл бұрын
@@devinkerr5474 One thing I'll say in favor of demystifying 40K intimidation factor is that, while my and everyone else's comments here are accurate, there is also an effective reading of 40K from the far opposite angle. Meaning? I think you can still enjoy most 40K stuff from a super surface level superficial read of it. Tyranids? Hoard of hungry space bugs. Orks? Well they're Orcs... in space... with guns. Necros? What if the Undead were Terminators instead of skeletons. Space Marines? Space Marines. All 100% accurate and true statements that get the point and flavor across. All the rabbit hole stuff we joke about is there but I wouldn't ever suggest someone try to learn it all. First you don't need too. Second, there's literally too much and I think it's by design. Just pick something you like, be it a 40K videogame, one of these Commander Decks, whatever and take it at face value. It's never actually all that complicated story telling in execution. If something strikes your fancy and you want to learn more about it? Just know that there's always more to learn if you look. Game Workshop always used to call it's "lore" simply "fluff" because that's really what it is. There's a lot of it. But it's fluff. You don't need to know it so the smart money is not to try to know it all. You can always google something later after all :p The Tyranids are still just cool hungry space bugs whether you know what the Shadow of the Warp is, or about the crazy Genestealer lore, or not.
