As I watch the documentary on the life of DJ AM I am struck with the topsy-turvy way we view drug addiction. Let's use the example of a person who had a broken leg. This person is given morphine for the pain. Now, what is the best way to get the patient weaned off of the morphine? As a nurse, I would say when the leg heals enough that the pain is reduced enough to begin the weaning process. BUT, what we hear is that we need to wean off the morphine while the patient is in full blown pain of the broken leg. It is counter-intuitive to try to wean someone off of a drug for pain before we deal with the PAIN...NOT THE MORPHINE! AND DJ AM died of an overdose after years of so-called sobriety when in essence it was not sobriety but just a make-believe existence where the pain was not dealt with as much as the drug was dealt with. AMERICA wake up! Deal with the pain then you will be able to deal with the drugs. The drugs are a symptom, not the problem.
