I turned 19 the year this movie came out and I can tell you with absolute certainty that the world was not "totally devoid" of the internet in 1998. I know because I utilized the net to write several school papers that year and all throughout University. You're right about there being no smartphones but cell phones were very much a thing. Mine was a Nokia 5110.

The scene of Jason Segal dropping the watermelon was cut from the film, but he’s in later scenes eating pieces of watermelon. It always confused me and I could have swore I saw the scene before. It was years before I realized It was in the trailer.
