Shout out to the legends themselves, The Beatles. So sorry I didn't recognize those lyrics at the end! Our invisible girl is studying 'Warm Gun' lyrics.
@arthurcamargo8416 Жыл бұрын
Warm Gun was written by John Lennon. A long time ago a popular conspiracy theory was that the FBI were the ones who assassinated John Lennon. The theory goes that after the Beetles went to India, or while they were there, John was radicalized. The FBI had the Beetles on their watch list. When John released Imagine (post Beetles), which was taken by many to be a song about communism (during the cold war, that was a big deal), the FBI carried out his assassination so that he couldn't create an unstoppable cult of communist fans in the US/UK. Great reactions, and predictions! You called it right away!!

23:40 As a general statement that is incorrect. Depending on the Age of Consent laws of each individual state/country a relationship between a 16 year old girl and a 25 year old man (or vice versa) may or may not be illegal. Here are a few examples: - State of Georgia in the USA: Age of Consent is 16, therefore such a relationship even including sex would be legal - Californa (where Buffy takes place): Age of Consent is 18, relationship would be illegal. - Washington DC: Age of Consent is 21 which means that even people aged 20 are not allowed to be in a relationship or have sex with someone above the age of 21 (which is ridiculous of course) - Germany: Age of Consent is 14 (with a few conditions like the older partner not being in a position of power like a teacher, coach or something along those lines) - in some (mostly muslim) countries the age is not relevant, instead people have to be married. In most countries the Age of Consent is between 14 -18, with 16 being the most common. In regards to Buffy and Angel - it is compeltely irrelevant how old Angel was when he was turned. He is over 240 years old - what matters is not if a body has the physical changes that are usually associated with aging. The only factor that matters is life experiance and the actual age. One of the reasons why Age of Consent laws exist in the first place is to prevent older, more experienced people to exploit young people that are still too inexperienced and thus can be easily manipulated and taken advantage of. This imbalance in experiance is what matters, not if a body looks young or not.
@sirmoonslosthismind Жыл бұрын
@@HH-hd7nd lots of wrong information in your post! for example, dc most certainly does not prohibit 20 year olds from having sex with 21 year olds. (their actual law is somewhat complicated tho so i'm not going to try to summarize it.) and while your concern about "more experienced people [exploiting] young people" is valid, there is no universal agreement on "what matters". for example, australia has aggressively criminalized pornographic material featuring "young looking" people regardless of their actual age. a 30 year old from china can be prosecuted for sexting because australian authorities don't think she has a "mature enough" body.

@@HH-hd7nd here in South Carolina, the age of consent is 16. We had a case, recently, of a high school teacher who had sex with a student. While the teacher lost his job, the girl's parents wanted him to be arrested. Something the authorities couldn't do since the girl was 16.

One of my favorite season one episodes! We start to see the potential of the show - with the "monster" of the episode being a metaphor for something larger. And something I hadn't noticed before...Giles jokingly telling Buffy that to find the invisible someone she might have to actually work on listening to other people...and then that is exactly how Buffy ends up knocking Marcie out, by listening for her movements. And it's ironic that in her pre-invisible life, no one ever listened to her...And the more I think about it...the episode has a theme of invisibility and not being seen, but the idea of not being HEARD is just as present...and what messages does Marcie leave behind? Not only "Look" but also "Listen".
@Buffy8Fan Жыл бұрын
They've always done that. Witches was a metaphor for mothers and daughters, the praying mantis was a metaphor for adults taking advantage of minors, the pack was a metaphor for bullying, _I Robot, You Jane_ was a metaphor for how scary people considered the internet at the time, etc.

"It's too hard to be around her." I don't think Angel struggles with an urge to kill Buffy. It's not like Edward being desperate to drink Bella's blood. Angel is saying it's too hard to be around Buffy and not let their romance devrlop. (Like in ep 7 when he sats when he's around her all je wants to do is kiss her.) So, hes trying to stay away from her but still help from the sidelines. In ep 7, Buffy and Angel had stated they couldn't be together because he's older and a vampire, and she's the slayer i.e. it's too complicated. Of course, strong feelings often outweigh being practical
@stargazer1682 Жыл бұрын
The thing to keep in mind with people remembering or rationalizing is, a ) how open is the average person some something being supernatural, a demon or some other thing that goes bump in the night? and b ) there's a very simple fact that our memories are not remotely reliable in real life, and are easily influenced by our own bias and other factors. This is why eyewitness testimony is actually usually not all that helpful in identifying subjects or providing an entirely accurate description of events. People usually aren't paying that close attention to what's happening around them, and when something does happen, they may begin to make certain assumptions; someone makes an offhand comment or suggests an explanation for what's happening, even though they have no idea what's going on, but suddenly that idea becomes embedded in another person's brain as a known fact that colors their recollection.

You must feel REALLY lonley to become invisible. I mean, both Willow and Xander are wildly unpopular but they always had each other, and teachers love Willow, so she never felt alone. And it wasn't so much that she attacked the teacher for not calling on her in class before, but that the teacher actually liked Cordellia and was helping her/encouraging her. Angels human age is nebulous at best as the show has a very soft magic system and its lore isn't super set in stone. Details like what year Angel was turned or even the specifics of how vampires work will fluctuate over the series in service to the stories they want to tell. That said, and without spoilers, while the show is portraying Angel and Buffy as a potentially earnest romance.. it doesn't shy away from calling out, pointing out, or showing the issues with the pairing. It's one of the things that set this show apart to me from a lot of the imitators that came after is that even at this stage in S1 Buffy doesn't pretend there isn't a toxic side to a possible romance like theirs.
@moonystic9417 Жыл бұрын
Actually, we know details such as Angel's human age thanks to a AtS flashback. There's an episode where we can see Liam's grave and the headstone states the year he was born and the year he died. Even before that his age never fluctuated.

when you said at the beginning that you’re looking too deep into the title, there’s this idea in fandom that i love, that’s essentially; “it’s not that deep, but the ground is soft and i can dig”. just bc something seems easy or unimportant doesn’t mean more meaning can’t be found.

Great episode, we finally get shades of Cordelia, showing she isn't just a mean girl but has a mind of her own and is not actually stupid. The scene of her analysis is spot on...then she starts doing the poor me story. Thus begins her character development for Cordelia throughout the Buffyverse. Clea Duvall is an actress who many in the 90's will remember seeing but never remembering her name as she was in quite a bit of shows and films. This episode does callback to Buffy being like Cordelia in the film (if you watch the film you'll see) & it's a nice reminder of how she's grown. Those FBI guys, remember them, more foreshadowing that when you've seen the whole show is awesome to see in hindsight.
@alicequinn505 Жыл бұрын
The Cordelia/Buffy transition probably happened earlier than that, when Buffy started hanging out with Willow and Xander. Cordelia wouldn't want to be seen hanging out with people who hang out with losers, especially after rejecting the option to be friends with her. The attack at The Bronze just cemented that.
@bobbyclarkston8836 Жыл бұрын
Does the age gap question really apply when one of those individuals doesn’t age? Angel EXISTS, attains more knowledge and experience but that’s relative to the life you live. He could live for a hundred years locked away from everyone with zero exposure to evolving culture and have less meaningful experiences than the average sixteen year old girl who lives everyday in the world and has a huge responsibility to it, a.k.a., the Slayer. I hope you see where I’m going with this. Basically, it’s about context of the situation. Here’s another age gap situation: a couple has been dating for awhile and wants to progress to a more physical intimacy. He’s eighteen and she’s seventeen. Unless they’re both eighteen, it’ll be considered statutory rape in the eyes of the law. Oh, and did I mention that their birthdays are separated by just a couple days? Am I supposed to believe that some “magical” change will occur within her in those two days that will make a lick of difference to anyone but the law? I always thought that was an interesting question because no; it won’t matter at all. He could still be arrested for rape even if it’s ten minutes until midnight preceding her turning eighteen. Now that’s not to say a judge might not throw the case out for the technicality or that a jury won’t find him not guilty but still; laws should be about more than black and white and see into the grey. (This analogy REALLY got away from me)

It proves, many times the scariest monsters are humans. Buffy is kind of an interesting philosophical venture into what are monsters, villains, good guys, or even heroes? An interesting thing to think about is how Angel has changed the definition of what the slayer is. Before, the slayer simply killed beings from the non human realm. Angel threw a monkey wrench into that though. He's a demon with a soul. So, Buffy, the slayers had to judge if he was worthy of living or not. It isn't super noticable at this point, but this is actually a fairly deep distinction. The slayer is a judge of the underworld. But, that concept can be taken further, like in this episode. Again, it's not glaringly obvious, but you touched on it. You were worried about this girl being killed. More, at least incounciously, you were worried Buffy would have to kill her. Buffy is the slayer, which at its base is killer. So, if the slayer is the judge and executioner of the the underworld, this episode introduces the concept of, what us Buffy's role in the human realm? Especially when the human realm blurs with the underworld? This was also touched on in episode 3 with the witch. Each time though, Buffy has been saved from making any decision. The witch cursed herself and in this episode the FBI took the decision out of her hands. Still, the dilemma has been presented, although many in their first time through have a hard time seeing through the campiness to see these pretty crazy philosophical dilemmas being constructed. Something to keep an eye out for in the future. We don't call this show one of the greatest without cause. There is many times things hiding underneath the jokes and juvenile behaviour.

No dispute. (Not really a spoiler): The journal's entry says he "was 18 and still human" at the time, it doesn't say he was turned at 18. Is there a teen vampire romance that doesn’t have a disturbing age gap relationship? Even if the vampire died as a teen they’re still decades or even centuries to old for the person they have a crush on. And that’s totally ignoring the necro aspect of the relationship. There’s usually laws against dating dead people as well as underage people. Well I don’t think it’s the dating per se that’s illegal. It’s certain activities that dating potentially leads to that’s outlawed. If they don’t cross that line, perhaps everything is ok? I’m trying to recall if there were lines that weren’t crossed in The Vampire Diaries. 🤔 So I just tend to ignore all of that when watching these types of shows.

I recall looking up age of consent in California after a particularly intense discussion about ages on Buffy. It’s actually 18 with no exceptions if I recall correctly. So two 17 year olds could be both charged with a crime and they both put on predator watch lists for life. Not sure how often that actually happens. But I’m not certain the laws necessarily make sense either.

Youre the first reactor to deduce very quickly what the episode is about. Great job 👏. It's interesting and scary to know that the FBI is involved in the supernatural. What else do they know? 🤔 There were MANY actresses who auditioned to play Buffy, including Charisma herself. But it's also interesting that Sarah originally auditioned to play Cordelia. You can see the contrast and similarities between the two. Very cool. The reason Angel was there to save Willow, Giles and Xander in time was because him and Giles were talking about the Codex book. Which Angel said he knew where it was. He was bringing him the book. Otherwise they'd be dead 😬. But we need to get our hands on the other books if possible. Buffy should know the history of a Slayer among other historical sources regarding the Slayer. That'd be cool to look into and find out what happened in the past or if there's anything else down the road for the Slayer. We know they don't live long lives. She may be insane rather than evil, but either way, she should really be locked up forever unless some kind of intense therapy csn help restore her to her senses and help her process the intense trauma that led her to become invisible

The weird thing is that next year Buffy will be 17 and Angel will still be 25 as a vampire he never ages it is a weird dichotomy

I've recently seen a lot of people referring to his age at turning as 25 - when it was actually 26. It's not a huge difference, I'm just curious as to where that idea came from?

Angels perception of a human age gap is wildly different than our understanding today of the same. It wasn't strange for older men to marry 16-year-olds back in the 1700s. A step back to that past time period and suddenly that relationship isn't viewed as "creepy" by the general population of that time period. I'm not saying the relationship is right. I'm just saying that underneath a different cultural lens (the one angel grew up from a baby to an adult under) a romantic relationship between a very young girl and a much older man is perfectly natural and fine.

Wonder what's in that Codex that became the McGuffin of saving the scoobies in this eipisode? In the penultimate episode. Hmm. Avoiding spoiling, looking forward to your reaction to Ep 12, absolutely the BEST of season 1, and when those of us back when it was aired began to understand it was not just a great show, it had an incredibly talented cast. And that carried forward into following seasons. And the writing got tighter and more intense, and the fans went wild. Seriously, just my opinion, yours may differ (if you want scoffing as this series gets awesome!)

Somewhat spoilery in regard to general developments, so I'll leave some space: If you have trouble taking Tortured Romance seriously 8:50 you're going to have problems with the whole Buffy/Angel thing. 😟

That's okay, she is not required to like everything in the show.. I myself also dislike the thing you mentioned, but it's still my favorite TV show!

Why people (and the law) in America can be so obsessed with age difference in relationships is absolutely beyond me. It's not like teenagers are babies or people your own age are all great for you either. So yes, skipping that tiresome discussion is definitely appreciated. ;) I never read the assassination and infiltration page except for the headline ... but now I kinda think someone managed to slip in a smut novel as a prop there xD

It’s about power and the lack of consent. You may not like it, but studies have shown that the human brain is not fully developed until close to 25. Kids do not have the ability to consent.

That's not an exception. Most countries have laws specifying how old a person has to be to be considered an adult. Romantic relationships are just one of the ramifications, but most people agree that children/teens shouldn't be drinking nor driving either.

Please, make fun. Buffy & Angel have a ludicrously cringe relationship, a fact that should be repeated loudly & as often as possible. He's a 240+ year old vampire that acts like a teenager. That is cringe. He was turned when he was 27 & he fell for Buffy when she was 15... That's all kinds of "absolutely not" and also... really cringe !! I have a lot of sympathy for Buffy in this situation btw, she is actually a 16yr old girl. Angel though... he needs a frigging intervention. He absolutely should know better.

@@anthonysoto1615 Oh my dear, sweet boy.. Firstly, "is" would be the correct tense as my comment still exists. Secondly, could you tell me why you approve of paedophilia, Anthony ? Or do you just consider a 15yr old to be "fair game" ?

Poltergeists are always invisible, although American shows/films particularly often give them visible forms. The show only has a few ghosts, it has othnor ways of dead people returning. 7:55

In my head canon, Angel is forever 22. I know at some point we see his grave and it indicates that he’s 25, but 22 sounds more appropriate and less creepy. I mean Buffy is still only 16 but I can take a 22 year old and a 16 year old being in love more than any age over that.
