Buffy was getting a lot of attention as season 2 began. I would say the fandom was small but loyal, and it was growing. They got a sizeable increase in budget and it shows, AND we got Cristophe Beck as composer for some of the season 2 episodes. Also, they really stepped up the stunt work, integrating more martial arts into the fight choreography (led by the legendary Sophia Crawford).

Another great reaction video. Considering how mean Cordelia was to Willow and Xander for years, there's little reason for them to suddenly accept her as a friend just like that. Poor Willow was afraid of her own shadow thanks to Cordy and her clique back in season 1 and she did something even worse to Marcie. On the other hand, Xander didn't hesitate to literally go through fire to save Cordelia's life so that's something. Things are really about to take off for the better soon. Can't wait to see what you think of this classic season.

Funny anecdote from the olden times: I was aware of the concept of fandoms, but did not know what they entailed, nor did I know how to participate in them. I watched this show religiously, but when a season ended I had no clue if there would be another. I'd know a few weeks before it started, since they would have ads for upcoming shows on tv. That was really the only way in my experience to get information on shows. Movies on the other hand, when you rented a tape, it had trailers for other related (related by genre or more broadly by target audience) movies in the beginnin. Also the VHS case had ads on the inside when the case was translucent, usually for the same movies as were advertised in the trailers, usually some version of a movie poster. There probably was magazines (periodical publications printed on paper) that concerned the subject matter of pop culture and these would probably have had information on upcoming entertainment, but I did not read any. I bring up the VHS tapes, as I have recently started acquiring and collection them anew. I wonder if printed newspapers are still available?

I think that Xander's unnecessary meanness toward Cordelia in that scene you got pissed at is more a consequence of the writing style than it is Xander's character, per se. In a group scene like that one, either Xander or Cordy are usually being super mean & outrageous to keep the rhythm of the scene ticking along. Watch for it, there will be a serious conversation going on & one character in the scene will basically be doing a stand-up routine woven into the conversation.

Another very interesting thing about the BTVS series is the writers constantly pay homage to old films throughout. Here of course we have The Frankenstein type theme, but also if you notice near the start where 'My Girl' is being sung whilst assembling the parts, a direct reference to 1987 film Mannequin starring Andrew McCarthy and Kim Catrall, where Jonathan is singing that same song whilst trying to create the perfect girl Mannequin. Also calling the dead character here DARYL could be a reference to 1985 sci-fi D.A.R.Y.L. , could be coincidence that last one but who knows. Quiet sad when we see Daryl's mother looking at his old American Football games, and Daryl himself thinking of his human life as well. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXfGdIJsbNGqpbs from 18secs in here you can see the 'My Girl' scene definitely took that from here.

The season opener was Whedon needing to get rid of the leftovers from the last season. He ended Season 1 with the thought it might not get renewed & didn't think about the Anointed One. When this aired there wasn't much of a deal, but reruns during the Summer time helped it get noticed (same thing happened to Beverly Hills 90210). What Buffy went through with episode one is PTSD, she was able to deal with it at the time but as time went on the reality that she died hit her and the Master was her trigger. So her being able to literally smash his bones was a great visual way of showing it.
@killianlpc Жыл бұрын
When She Was Bad was a great opener from S2 Buffy obviously suffering from PTSD, and taking it all out on her friends. Interesting when Cordelia even tries to intervene referencing Buffy to Joan Collins as a type of 'Uber Bitch' because she knows that behaviour herself. All's well at the end and a bit of comic relief with The Anointed One ' I hate that girl' Another well written episode exploring psychological illness and how it can affect others.

Many, including me, interpret Buffy's erratic and antisocial behaviour to PTSD from dying last season. During the episode, Buffy appeared to shrug off tr face that she died, but this first episode let's us know that her death had a far larger impact. In fact, her erratic behaviour here is the least of its impact. One of the truly great things about this show is that even seemingly minor events and realizations can cause dramatic character growth that affects how they act going forward. The PTSD idea is supported by her out of normal behaviour all summer. She was not only distant from her father, but didn't even enjoy things she normally used to. It's also very common for people with PTSD to distance themselves from friends and also whatever caused the trauma.

When she was bad is about Buffy suffering PTSD...there are numerous signs in the episode, i'll list some: - She has cut her hair from long to short (experts indicate this is often a sign of stress or trauma in teens, especially girls) - Her dad said she seemed distant in LA over the summer. - When she meets up with Xander n Willow she seems distant; she stares at the master's grave (where willow points) and doesn't overly care about seeing Giles. - First day back at school she makes a dark joke about her death "live and kicking" - In her training she seems to be REALLY over doing it. - She alienates her friends against each other by acting sexual and predatory.

The Buffy mythos doesn't really sexualize the vampire bite the way so many others (e.g. the Dracula/Christophe Lee movies from Hammer Studios in the 1950's & 60's) do, but Buffy's behavior in episode 1 feels (to me) like the acting out of a sexual abuse survivor, as if The Master's attack were, metaphorically speaking, the equivalent of an act of sexual molestation she needed to confront and overcome.

So many comments about Buffy’s PTSD but nothing about Xander’s. I hear Cass defending Cordy and only mildly acknowledging that she’s been mean to him in the past. I’m sure Cordy, aka: Queen Bitch of the Universe, has made him and Wills feel absolutely worthless time and time again and it’s gonna take more than a couple episodes of hanging with the gang for him to get past it. I’d say his only refuge has been hanging out in the library helping save the world and now the bully that has made his life hell is invading his inner sanctum. Of course he wants her out so he’s making digs hoping she’ll tire of it and take off. That doesn’t make him a bad guy, just a traumatized teen. Emphasis on TEEN. He’s not fully matured yet and YET, he saves Cordy at the end BECAUSE he’s not going to let her horrible behavior influence his decisions when it comes to life and death situations. In a way, they’re mirrors of each other. When on their home turf, out comes the superiority and confidence of their positions while inside their compassionate, warm and caring of those around them. Maybe in Cordelia’s case way, way, WAY inside but it’s there 😉

I like when people try to predict things, provided they don’t feel cheated if their predictions are accurate. I also think as someone who watched Buffy as it aired, it was groundbreaking for so many reasons and predictions were harder to make because no other shows were like it. I think with other shows taking liberties with pulling ideas from the show (Vampire Diaries comes to mind, and you mentioned you’ve seen that in a previous reaction), it is probably more common to make some accurate predictions if you’ve seen other shows that modeled some of their plots (and in some cases blatantly copied them) from this one.

Yes. The show was just beginning to get its hype back in the day. And you'll be able to tell by the way they dressed and how they had their hair done, especially with Sarah. Her popularity was just starting to take off. And you can see the new haircut she's got. I believe this was after filming I Know What You Did Last Summer. By the end of that movie, she's shortened her hair. And it fits in perfectly for the filming of the second season. Just like when kids go back to school after summer break. Everyone sports a new look 😎. And I think Xander's digs at Cordelia were just fine. She has said harsher things to him that sting. These were little jabs he made at her. And she got a taste of her own medicine there at the end of the second episode when she went to go thank him for saving her life. She's always been rude to him and Willow and he did it right back to her. It's their thing to bicker back and forth. I enjoy it. It's not meant to be that serious. Hence why he asks Willow why they can't get dates lol. As long as no one steps out of line and says something totally uncalled for then we're cool 👍. But it is nice to see her slowly become part of the group. I keep in mind that she only hangs out with the cool kids. Which then to me it means she might think Buffy, Willow and Xander are cool peeps in her eyes. Though she won't publicly say it lol. She's slowly coming around 🤗. I say right on! It's good that the Slayer has more backup ♥.

I definitely don't mind longer videos and the two for one! That said, it's interesting that you don't want to have more videos to release. Since they would all be over the minimum length and a lot of people will watch to completion, wouldn't having a different video release for each Buffy episode only help your standing on KZbin and get things pushed by their algorithm more? That was always my understanding but hey, whatever works best for you as a creator is great with the viewers. No real difference from a viewer perspective how long each video is or how many episodes it encompasses.

Regarding Buffy's popularity at the time. Part of the problem with the studio not spending a lot of money on the first season was that they also didn't really advertise the series much or target appropriate audiences. There was actually a really strong vampire subculture in the 90s, especially in the Pacific Northwest (both US and Canada), but first season went under most people's radar because people thought it was a cheap knock-off of a flawed but generally liked cult film. For example, Friday the 13th: The Series (1987) ran 3 seasons and had nothing to do with the films; it was a couple collecting cursed artefacts while running an antique store. But this was the early days of the internet, so season 2 was when word started getting around that BVS was actually worth watching and that it was being made by someone involved with the original film. Regarding Cordelia: The 80s saw the rise of the celebutantes: people who were famous because their parents were rich or famous. The 90s is when people started realising that these young people often acted spoiled and self-entitled not simply because they were rich, but because they were neglected, raised by staff, and generally ignored. Just as Buffy is a comment on girls fighting back against monsters and Willow is a comment on nerds actually being useful, Cordelia is social commentary on the fact that rich teen girls have a reason to act the way they do.

If there's one thing I understand it's loneliness, it can be devastating to endure a whole life of it especially when you're fat in a health nut era and age of internet dating so I can imagine how'd it feel to be a literal Frankenstein

I think I was in either 7th or 8th grade when season 2 came out, and I was terrified that high school would be anything like this. Not with monsters, but with the talking to girls, or girls being mean if you tried talking to them. Thankfully, it was only mostly accurate lol

It's funny you should mention the cast of Stranger things aging before our eyes. The reason the Anointed One is usually shown sitting down in season 2 is that the actor playing was noticeably taller. For the record, I really like your reaction style. I'm glad you're not letting any of us push you around. Don't let the Algorithm push you around, either.

How do we flag spoilers for the moderator(s)? I've seen comments that while cryptic are definitely baiting you with a spoiler. I don't want you to be spoiled; I love your fresh reactions.

They haven't seen a vampire all summer don't you find it odd that a vampire just happened to show up right around the same time Buffy shows up

Cass, please be careful with the music reactions here on KZbin, especially on your primary channel as music seems to get a higher rate of claims and strikes from the music industry. I've seen three strikes been given back to back and peoples channels gone. Sometimes, they strike all at once. I've even seen a reaction channel get all of their videos claimed once they had finished reacting to six seasons of a series, just from them using 6 - 9 seconds of the series theme. Maybe start a secondary music channel like "Cass Reacts to Music" or "Cass Music Reactions" and place all of your music reactions there, keeping the TV / Movie reactions in one space and the music reactions in another space.

LOL I do get getting irritated in Xander's meanness to Cordelia, in 2x2 it does seem a bit excessive, but in his defense Cordelia was essentially his and Willow's bully for a while, before the show started for the viewers-and at this point it does just seems how they best communicate XD

Cordelia was Willow’s bully for YEARS. I mean, just think about what she says to Willow in the very first episode & look how anxious Willow is just being in Cordelia’s presence. I have zero problem with Xander’s attitude towards her..
