Walsh was very much Ambrose's water carrier - he'd cut down his pace and bowl marathon spells, a necessity in a four man pace attack lacking a dedicated spinner. Curtly was the best I ever saw, but every attack needs a Walsh when things get tough.

No it didn't. The board of Selectors are the problem. They won't put the best players in the team. Pollard, Jerome Taylor, Narine, Hope Hetymer, OShane Thomas, Darren & Dwayne Bravo, Roach & Chase. Holder and Archer on the bench. They supposed to get Archer from England and get a proper head coach & bowling coach. Have 4 or 5 batsmen play cricket in the English County. Improve the Regional 4 Day competition in the caribbean.

They represent their board.. since there their board comprises of 10+ countries, its hard to pick a talent and there always will be issue regarding power.. Coming to t20 ruining them, i dont agree.. they were facing enough problems even when t20 didn't even existed.. yes, their players lack temperament which is required for longer form of cricket.. infact because of t20 they are at least doing good in some form of cricket.. And there is a big issues going on between players and board.. all senior players are benched and non experience players are representing west indies.. no one is choosing to opt out of playing for west indies, they are forced to opt out.. and then you cant blame them for playing in different leagues around the world for their livelihood...

To be fair Atherton is coming up against the most loaded generations of fast bowlers in history. From memory it was probably England that had the weakest pace attack of that era and he can never play against them. Gough and Caddick don't really worry the top order of the top teams of this time period.Nearly every one of the fast bowlers of Atherton's generation is regarded as one of the undisputed greats. McGrath & lee , Srinath, Akram and Younis, Pollock and Donald, Walsh and Ambrose etc etc. Nevermind the 2nd tier of fast bowlers like Prasad, Vaas and Fleming. That's a tough for an opening batsman

It wasn't a good team. This was 2000. They had already lost 0-3 to Pakistan. 0-5 to SA and got kicked out of the 99 World Cup before the Super 6. They lost this series against England 1-3. Later in 2000 they would go to Australia and get hammered 0-5.

This series, and more precisely, Walsh, got me into cricket. He got Thorpe (a wonderful batsman) twice this series with 2 of the most incredibly disguised slower balls you'll ever see. He _almost_ got him a third time but Thorpe just about jammed his bat down on it. What a bowler.

Atherton was a real bunny against all great bowlers
@alfredjohnson2647
@alfredjohnson2647 5 жыл бұрын
He had a few of them to face - Warne/McGrath, Donald/Pollock, Waqar/Wasim, Walsh/Ambrose. Averaging 38 when that's what you're up against is no disgrace.
@kwl189
@kwl189 5 жыл бұрын
@@alfredjohnson2647 it's actually really impressive because if he managed to get through them, he'd have the likes of Murali to face. Atherton could have been in mid 40s for an average in a more favourable era.
@andrewjenkinson8948
@andrewjenkinson8948 5 жыл бұрын
You could make the argument that no other opener in history has had to face the consistently outstanding quality of new-ball bowling than Atherton did. Pakistan, Australia, the Windies and South Africa (who incidentally were the teams Atherton played the most tests against in his career) all had all-time-great attacks, and his record against all was not bad at all - 38 v Aus, 25 v Pak, 36 v SA, and 37 v Windies). Add to the fact that pitches were generally less batsman friendly during his career, to call him a bunny is way off the mark.

I'm only 33 with a rabid cricket addict in my dad. He had a huge impact for my passion for the game, which, however, really grew on me late in my highschool years. However, the short of the long, is that dad has all these VCR tapes and a still functioning player, and I have to say, it is a joy watching the generation of West Indian players going back to Kalicharan, Lloyd, Kanhai, Sobers, Greenidge, Rowe, Richards, Haynes, Dujon, Roberts, Holding, Garner, Marshall and then later, Lara, Walsh, Ambrose and so many others, who I love watching the most across any generation of players from any part of the world since. I never saw them playing live, but watching these tapes made me appreciate just how charismatic yet humble they were even in their dominant years as world champions. I still rate them as the greatest cricket entertainers ever with their cavalier batting, brilliant fielding, punching batting gloves mid-wicket and exuberant celebration on taking wickets. They were infectious and I can understand why they drew huge crowds wherever they played, most obviously because they loved the game with immense passion. Despite hailing from different countries, they played with great unity, loyalty and respect for one another, which for me, made them extra special. I have to say, if that generation was around today, all of them would be the world's first sporting billionaires.
