Phil and Genesis are at their best here I think. The atmosphere and composition plus his diabolical 'laughing' really capture what the song is about. So very dark, predatory yet he is innocent too -being pulled into this sordid world. Incredible stuff. Tonight, tonight, tonight is another gem. His solo work is very commercial but with Genesis, he is very raw. and real He unleashes his dark side through his vocals, lyrics and their melodies are just... haunting. The guy on keyboards is a legend.

I don't think so, I like this song but I feel like the compositions are so much more delicate when Steve was still in the band. I prefer the Gabriel era, but Phil did a good job continuing it through to Wind and Wuthering. It's when Steve left that I feel there wasn't really the same thing going

Fun fact: this song follows the motions of a 4 stroke engine. The two drumbeats go in the pattern of the valves opening, exhaust and intake respectively, and each clap is the combustion stroke. And a rarity for "Magnum". A lot of cover versions of popular songs were used on TV shows ("Magnum" included), I'm guessing to avoid paying as much in royalties. When I saw this episode, I immediately recognized the tune. But when I actually heard Phil Collins singing, I was surprised. "Miami Vice" and "WKRP" were the exceptions. I've heard that not wanting to pay royalties is why "WKRP" is so hard to get in syndication and on DVD. "Miami Vice" probably had an easier road because so many musicians had guest starring roles and agreed to the benefit of the exposure of their music.

Since then I thought I’d never expect to ever find the name of the song, so I just listen and listen and listen only to have a glimpse of any lyrics that can lead me to the song in question without success. Until one day my local radio proposed to send an SMS to a certain phone number so I can retrieve both the song name and the artist few years ago. And so here I am fully enjoying this after years of vain researches. I may be having songs I’d probably never find the name and artist and never listen again, but Mama is like my little victory I’m proud of when finding a song you found and listened out of curiosity at random times.
