I'm just 23 and I first heard this song through a videogame, GTA 4. I was astonished. I had always been a big fan of Phil and I recognised his voice immediately. The song suited the game atmosphere so well. I've become a new Genesis fan since then so I'm getting to know their whole discography. What a masterpiece❤

Phil and Genesis are at their best here I think. The atmosphere and composition plus his diabolical 'laughing' really capture what the song is about. So very dark, predatory yet he is innocent too -being pulled into this sordid world. Incredible stuff. Tonight, tonight, tonight is another gem. His solo work is very commercial but with Genesis, he is very raw. and real He unleashes his dark side through his vocals, lyrics and their melodies are just... haunting. The guy on keyboards is a legend.

I don't think so, I like this song but I feel like the compositions are so much more delicate when Steve was still in the band. I prefer the Gabriel era, but Phil did a good job continuing it through to Wind and Wuthering. It's when Steve left that I feel there wasn't really the same thing going

Fun fact: this song follows the motions of a 4 stroke engine. The two drumbeats go in the pattern of the valves opening, exhaust and intake respectively, and each clap is the combustion stroke. It's fun to imagine it for me, and even better, find a video of an engine cutaway and try to time it to the song.

Crazy how some tunes can transport you back through time, I was at the Reading rock festival the week after this came out in 83 this came over the site PA I think John Peel played it, it was the first time anyone on site had heard it, it totally knocked everyone sideways, I can feel the bass pressure on my chest and blowing my beautiful long hair and the hot august sun, now 40 years later, I’m 21 again wondering where the time went and missing my old friendships. Some memories fade some remain, live in the moment kids, they’re precious!

And a rarity for "Magnum". A lot of cover versions of popular songs were used on TV shows ("Magnum" included), I'm guessing to avoid paying as much in royalties. When I saw this episode, I immediately recognized the tune. But when I actually heard Phil Collins singing, I was surprised. "Miami Vice" and "WKRP" were the exceptions. I've heard that not wanting to pay royalties is why "WKRP" is so hard to get in syndication and on DVD. "Miami Vice" probably had an easier road because so many musicians had guest starring roles and agreed to the benefit of the exposure of their music.

Man ...the 80's ....what a kick ass, robust, galaxy of talent there was, I was more of a Hard Rock / Metal guy, but you better believe that Genesis wasn't in the cassette suit case in the backseat, and even a couple of road trips to go SEE GENESIS. Man what I would give to go right back to 1981 and do it all over again !

Sorry for your loss, but considering this is a Freudian song about a man in love with a prostitute he calls "Mama", this is a ... weird song to dedicate to your mom. Kind of like how a lot of people dedicate "The One I Love" to their lovers... not realizing what it means.

I was around 10 or 12 when I first heard this song on radio. It was in the middle of the night and this song woke me up for some reason. Since then I thought I’d never expect to ever find the name of the song, so I just listen and listen and listen only to have a glimpse of any lyrics that can lead me to the song in question without success. Until one day my local radio proposed to send an SMS to a certain phone number so I can retrieve both the song name and the artist few years ago. And so here I am fully enjoying this after years of vain researches. I may be having songs I’d probably never find the name and artist and never listen again, but Mama is like my little victory I’m proud of when finding a song you found and listened out of curiosity at random times.

I remember when it came out that the specialized magazines were full of criticism for this album. I still remember one very well: "An album so bad that Genesis weren't even able to give it a title". Today those critics would survive perhaps 5 minutes with what we hear around.

I heard this track for the first time on DVD from 1987 Wembley Stadium.🏟️ It was my first contact with Genesis and to this day it's probably my favorite concert. Great vibe! I was 4 or 5 and it might sound strange but ... I thought Collins was singing Mama in Italian!🇮🇹 I have no idea where it came from, but it did. Of course, I was terribly afraid of that laugh in the middle of the song and his face lit yellow! 🤪🔦

My favorite episode, "Death and Taxes". The song really sets the mood in a more serious episode where Magnum is playing a deadly game of "cat and mouse" with a serial killer.
