17:10 This actually happened to me once. I worked at a restaurant right on the beach in Orange County CA. I was working the early shift and was a bit hungover, so I went out front to take a little break and sat on the sidewalk curb nursing my morning coffee. I was wearing decent clothes that were clean but I hadnt shaved that morning and might have looked a little rough. This tourist and his GF walked past me and the guy dropped a dollar in my Styrofoam coffee cup and walked past. At first I was offended but hey, I made an extra buck, lol. I tried Stephen Merchant's "no speak English" thing some years back ... we were in Shanghai and every couple hundred feet we were accosted by someone wanting to take us to an "art exhibition" or to buy handbags at another location or something like that ... I usually have great luck just being polite and saying "no thank you" and walking on .. but they were VERY insistent. So I started saying "No Comprendo." This worked like a CHARM because they had practiced up on their English. After all, not only do American and English tourists speak English ... tourists from around the world use English as sort of a "universal language," and definitely not Spanish. This strategy worked great for quite a while until a vendor approached us with some art sale "down the next street" and I said, "No comprendo." He smiled and said, "Ahhh, si ... como se llama???" I started laughing and asked (in my VERY limited Spanish) if he spoke Spanish and he bashfully smiled and said he didn't really ... it was hysterically funny.
@al20110313 күн бұрын
Ah man, the "art exhibitions"!!! Haven't thought about that in a fair old while! There used to be loads of people like that, especially around Tai Kang Lu and Yu Gardens. The "Watch?Bag?DVD?" people were my favourites because after you'd said no to everything it would be "....socks?" I'm still in Shanghai, but don't go downtown anymore!!!

A co-worker of mine told me the story of seeing American footballer Doug Flutie at the movie theater. My friend was a huge fan, but Doug was there with his autistic son so he just made eye contact and gave him "the chin nod." Flutie smiled and returned it, probably thankful not to have an entire lobby of people asking for his autograph. The theater is located on Flutie Pass (yes, named after him, and a pun on the fact that Flutie was a quarterback) in Framingham, Massachusetts.

its proper name is usually a fish & chip shop but it's shortened to chippy/chip shop a lot and so it's closer to like a general food place or takeaway, they also usually sell kebabs (at least the ones near me do) so you can get a variety of food but the staples are fish & chips (and also sausages/battered sausages lmao) sorry if it's worded weirdly i'm not the best at explaining 😅 and i'm not too sure what an equivalent would be for you? probably a deli?
