This is the kind of talk show that most of America lacks. The amazing thing about Graham is that he has the ability to make the guests relax. He gives them alcohol and doesn't ask too many questions... all the guests interact and Graham just joins the conversation its basically just a bunch of celebs chilling out and drinking x

@@theGoogol Craig was brilliant... remember he is originally from Scotland, so he is going to be using the same sort of approach. I love his interviews... no structure, just chatting with his celeb chums. Talk shows are about the guests not about the interviewer trying to get some laughs.

It's true. American hosts are always going on about themselves while trying to be funny (and, therefore attention-grabbing). Graham Norton keeps the focus on his guests, reminding us who we're really there to watch - the celebrities! And, consequently we enjoy watching him, too!
@grayden41383 жыл бұрын
Corden has taken the "couch" format and adapted it to American late night while still making the overall show his own. Its close without copying Graham explicitly but you can tell he's paying homage to the format made infamous by him.

Yeah, it's crazy how effortlessly the entire show seems to go. Graham can bring out the best in people. All American talk shows suck compared to his. Colbert, Fallon, Kimmel all seem so forced and disingenuous compared to Norton, and they're also less funny even though they rehearse everything. Conan is funny, but also seems forced sometimes.

There's a fundamental difference between chat shows in the U.S. and those in Britain. In the U.S.A. the host of the show is the star and guests are like incidental extras. In Britain the host makes sure that the guests are the most important people on display.
@halloween4826 жыл бұрын
There's nothing wrong with that, it's why people love Ellen and Jimmy Kimmel. Different strokes for different folks.

Is that why James Corden does his show with all guests at once, because he's British? I like that format. I agree with your comment about American talk show hosts. I don't even like watching them, anymore. I do enjoy watching James Corden occasionally, though. I don't know when Graham Norton's show is on, or what station, either.

76 Juno Youre exactly correct. I'm English, by the way.
@miaferrari9586 жыл бұрын
Nobody said the American format is "wrong", but personally, and I think many will agree, I find the American format boring; mostly because it's been done too many times. Nobody tries to innovate. Nothing wrong with the hosts either, but if I'm watching an interview of an actor I like, I'm watching it for the actor, and I wanna hear him/her talk, not the host interrupting and trying to be funny every 10 seconds. Besides, the whole "the show should revolve around me, the host" seems a little too self-centered and egotistical. Graham lets the spotlight shine on the guests, and it is thanks to this show that I've come to actually know anything interesting about the guest celebrities. And this reflects on the topics of conversation too. Graham clearly does his research on every guest and asks actually interesting questions, while, for example, Conan (as funny as I think he is) asking Nina Dobrev about her dress was the thing that made me get away from American chat shows for good.
@SophieMia8066 жыл бұрын
@@miaferrari958 ... I agree with basically everything you just wrote. Except I've never watched Conan's show. But I WAS thinking of Stephen Colbert when you were talking about self-centered. I used to enjoy watching his show sometimes. Then, before the 2016 Presidential election, all he seemed to talk about in his monologues, and still does from the commercials I see, was (and is) Donald Trump. I don't like Trump (in general), and I want to watch the show for the guests, and hear monologue jokes about other stuff aside from his stupid impressions of the President. Once in a while I can understand. But by the time I stopped watching, it was every single night. Basically his whole monologue, each night, was Trump this, Trump that. And with his guests, he does the same thing you wrote about. It's all about the host, and not the guests. It's tiring.

It's amazing to me how he juggles the guests and they get equal attention, how he directs the conversation to lead into another guests story (amazing research too) and making it flow in a natural way. English talk shows are just more relaxed and don't make whatever they're there to plug be the be all and end all of the interview. Think American shows have every second of the show practiced and rehearsed with long lists of what is or isn't ok to talk about. This takes all the fun out of it.
@JonahNelson73 жыл бұрын

@JonahNelson73 жыл бұрын
@@elliequinn6660 I think many of my fellow Americans came to believe that Britain is England because of the same reason America refers to the US. GB is referring to the island, but England is the most powerful in the island, so the island's name applies to England. Substitute island for continent and you have the same thing going on with America. I do wish my people would take the ten seconds it takes to understand the difference between GB, UK, England, and the British Isles, but you can't make people care about stuff

What separates the greats, such as Norton or Craig Ferguson, is that they are actors and not just sketch comics or standup comedians, so they create moments for the guests to shine without looking for a killer punchline or throwing to some pre-recorded gag bit in which they star.
