During the 1971 NFL season, following a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, St. Louis Cardinals running back MacArthur Lane went on a postgame rant about team owner Bill Bidwell. Despite leading the league in rushing touchdowns the year before, after those comments, he would never play another down for the Cards again. This is the story behind what might be the bitterest departure by any Cardinals player ever.

True that! As a Cowboys fan, I saw that pretty close up, year after year. There would be points where they would contend, but it was an uphill battle AGAINST BIDWILL the whole way. He actively impeded their chances of success.

I began my media career writing sports for a bi-weekly paper while I was in college near my hometown. One of the guys I worked with was our sales director who was from ST. LOUIS, MO. He told me that he heard BILL BIDWILL ON TV locally there say that BIDWILL just wanted to be good enough to contend for the playoffs, or just be competitive, playoffs or no postseason, and that was all he really hoped for. Why did Bidwill purportedly say he did not wish for the CARDS to... win the SUPER BOWL? LOL.. Because if the CARDS won it, or even just made it to the SB, people would expect that EVERY SEASON...HE SAID. Lol.. He was just too cheap to want to make that SBOWL fever happen every season..too cheap. With their fans, Bidwill perpetrated a pure fraud. He did not try to field their best team, but he sold tickets with that "trying" as a marketing pitch. Didn't he? He was not trying in an all-out fashion, but said he was.. Right? FRAUD!!

bill bidwell possibly the worst owner in nfl history. lane deserved a huge raise, and could have been part of a playoff team in st louis, but as usual greedy bidwell sabotaged his teams success. everything lane said about bidwell was true, should he have held back? i doubt it would have changed anything, might as well unload on the worthless p.o.s. and get the hell out of st. louis.

I just broke down the Cardinals since the Bidwells family took control in 1932. 24 winning seasons 57 losing seasons and 8 seasons of breaking even. I have never seen a team use the TE so little. Yeah they had Jackie Smith for a lot of years. But that is about it. The Next best guy is Doug Marsh. The next guys after that are Awalt, Freddie Jones and a Certain guy who blossomed with the Cowboys that the Cardinals had for 5 years Jay Novacek.

@@MerensWorld That's pretty awesome that you broke them down like that. I will give them credit for one thing. They did a GREAT job building and maintaining an awesome offensive line for about two decades in the 60's and 70s. They'd have a bad ass lineman and then groom his replacement , who would also be bad ass, and then slot him in when the old guy moved on. I think only the Rams and maybe Dallas come close to maintaining such high quality at the OL position for such a long period.

Bill Bidwill was the cheapest owner in sports history. He once said that he never wanted his team to win the Super Bowl because he'd have to pay them more money. Conrad Dobler once said in his book that on a road trip he fed the team day old hoagies. The worst example on how he ran the team was after the magical season of 1998, he broke up the team. Jamir Miller, gone. Lomas Brown, gone. Larry Centers, gone. Worst owner in history.

The stupidest thing about Bidwell is that he moved the Cardinals out of St. Louis, because Busch Stadium was "too small" (just over 51,000). The way he ran the team, he never needed to worry about big crowds.

It's strange hearing these stories about the Cardinals before 2006 and Bill Bidwell makes me glad to be a fan now. It's a miracle Bill's son Michael is nowhere as cheap as him, and actually can run the team competently. I knew Bill was cheap, but I never knew he was THAT cheap, holy shit how tf do you hope to never win a Super Bowl just because you don't want to give players their hard-earned money?

Mac and I were teammates at Utah State for three years. In 1967 Mac and I were team captains along with Bill Staley. He was not only an outstanding football player, but he was an amazing athlete. His older brother Sid was also a statred at center. In the spring of 1966, they had International Day, where they had a track meet and brought several outstanding American track athletes in for the meet. He ran 100-yard dash in 9.7 at 225# and use the old-style method of putting this shot and not the modern glide . He put the shot 55 feet. We remain friends until his passing.

One of Mike Leach's relatives must have been calling the plays. Seriously though back then Quarterbacks called the plays for the most part. Then again they had a mediocre OC in Lew Carpenter whose teams averaged a whopping 12.1, 16.5 and 13.8 points points per game. Yeah I was looking at Lanes stats he had games of 6, 3, 4, 4 carries. 8 in his final game with the team. He managed 150 carries on the yr. While Cid Edwards got 108 for a whopping 2.9 ypc. They had a bad coach and a Bad GM. The GM also happened to be Bill Bidwell.

#1 Lane is the only 1970's player I know of who had over 1000 yards from scrimmage for three different teams. #2 You don't need hyperbole to build up Lane. He was an excellent running back, but he was NOT in the discussions of best back of 1970. Larry Brown, Duane Thomas and Larry Csonka were. Lane was one of the best, to say he was THE best is a stretch. He was 3rd in yards frorm scrimmage behind leader Ron Johnson. He was third in rushing yards, behind Larry Brown. He was third in average yards rushed, behind Duane Thomas, he was first in rushing TD's and tied for first in all TD's. He had a great year. But no one thought he was the best. #3 The Cardinals had one of the best offensive linemen the NFL and maintained the high quality of that position from 1962- at least 1979. A nice run indeed. #4 As Good as Lane was, and he was very good, definitely in the top 20 for the 1970s, he was not elite. He was a great pass catcher and phenomenal blocker, and a bruising runner, but his yards per carry over his career are nothing to get fired up about. #5 All that said, I live his career path , and playing style and his awesome name.

informative and interesting story. Lane had an excellent career for starting so late at 26 AND not starting fr 2 years in STL. For an RB, he basically was about 6-7 years behind where a typical top RB would start contributing as a starter in the league. And he played for a long time, speaks to his conditioning and athletic gifts. It is stories like this, and there are a ton of others, that make one despise the old NFL, as with the rules and restrictions against player movement it propped up disinterested, greedy, and incompetent ownership, denied players a robust livelihood, and denied fans the opportunity to see the best players perform at their best

Bidwill was the biggest tightwad in the NFL. The contract Mel Gray got was so stingy that he was working nights as stock boy at a local grocery store just to make ends meet. When Don Coryell found out that this was why Gray kept falling asleep in team meetings, he was furious. Even more so when he found out from reporters that Terry Metcalf, his best offensive player, was leaving for Canada because the money was better there. When Coryell complained that Bidwill was dismantling the team mid-season (and the team went on downward slide as a result), Coryell was fired. It gets better: The following season, Don Coryell was head coach in San Diego. Bill Bidwill demanded compensation on the grounds that Coryell was still under contract with the Cardinals. He claimed with a straight face that when he changed the locks on the coaches' doors and announced the hiring of Bud Wilkinson to replace Coryell as head coach, that he didn't actually fire Coryell. The most absurd part was that the NFL made the Chargers give up a 3rd round pick to the Cardinals in 1980.

I think it was 1975 when Lane played for the Chiefs and led the league in receptions. I was 8 and my brother was 6. My dad signed us up to the Chiefs Wolfpack, a kids thing where all members got a ticket to a game and got to visit Arrowhead Stadium complete with a tour that included interaction with Chiefs players on the field at the end of the tour. I dont remember any Chiefs other than MacArthur Lane. Lane was a giant to us kids and was very friendly, answering our inane kid questions and accepting a challenge from my little brother to tackle Lane. Lane suggested that based on the size mismatch my brother could enlist all of us kids in the challenge to tackle him. The man had legs like a redwood's branch - he easily supported the entire group of 6-8 year olds tugging on his legs, laughing the whole time. He was my first introduction to pro athletes and i still hold him as the gold standard as a real person and loveable man. I wish the world had treated him better - he was as talented as ANY back in his time but only Chiefs fans between 54 and 56 know this. God bless Mac Lane

Also, Dallas in 1971 dealt with star RB Duane Thomas, who didn't speak to coaches, teammates and media that season. His was also a contract issue. My guess is that with the AFL/NFL merger completed in 1970, this ended bidding wars between the leagues. Thus, NFL owners had all the leverage to hold down salaries. Team traded Thomas to SD in 1972

Lane joined John Brockington in what was nicknamed the elephant backfield at Green Bay, making the playoffs. A strong running game. But dolts at QB. So bad at QB that when they played The Redskins in the playoffs the Skins did something not seen since perhaps some time in the 50s: the Skins played 5 man D line instead of the 4 man line that they and everyone had been using for a long time. And back then there were not the plethora of packages on offense or defense you see today. This was a big divergence. Done by Coach George Allen who had first made a name as a superb D coach for a championship Bears team and then head coach of a superb Rams team fearuring the Fearsome Foursome defensive line that included Deacon Jones and Merlin Olsen. The Packers were easily handled because they had zippo passing game.

In the Giants game, the Cards fell behind early by a 21-0 margin so they had to pass a lot after that..thus fewer carries. That loss set up what could have been a chaotic week 14 and beyond..which JG9 went into in a separate video (no I don't think he did the "click the card in the upper right corner" here for how had the Giants won their week 14 game the NFC wild card would have had a coin flip)

The shame of course was that Lane played in the era of non-free agency. Unlike today, where players can bid out their services to other teams when their contract expired, if you demanded a pay increase at that time, owners would just trade you, especially tight wads like Bidwell.

John Brockington was a true #1 back. First player in NFL history to gain three consecutive 1000 yard seasons in his first three seasons in the NFL. Lamme was a terrific complement. How they could have WASTED a number #1 pick for a quarterback from Nebraska (Jerry Tagge) is beyond me? A traditional running school with a quarterback who led the nation in offense is not something to build a franchise around! Dan Devine wasn't much, but Forrest Gregg deserved better.

Lane was good but no one, except maybe the most rabid Cardinal fans, would have listed him as the top RB in the NFL. Just for starters there was OJ Simpson, Larry Csonka, Duane Thomas. Simpson did not do much but he only played in 8 games and no one made the mistake of thinking he was not special. Thomas had to excel just to get on the field ahead of Calvin Hill. Lane was good. No question. But no, not "the best" on any list outside of "homers".
