The '71 Mets were 45-29 at the end of June, but a 13-31 slump derailed and pennant hopes. Another season flushed down the crapper.

Mikr Jorgensen was a slick fielder at first base, played some centerfield also. Singleton, Jorgensen and Tim Foli all played winter ball in PUERTO RICO.

Alot of dealings in the '71 off season - Nolan Ryan to Angels for Fregosi - Singleton, Foli and Jorgensen traded to Expos for Rusty Staub and for trivia buffs Mets released Bob Aspromonte (3rd baseman) - Aspro was the last active major leaguer to play for Brooklyn Dodgers.

Charlie Williams went to Gi-ants with bailout money for Willie Mays in '72. Several crowd shots were not at Shea - starting @ 1:20 Riverfront, Forbes Field and Jarry in Montreal. Injuries and lack of rbi's are what kept Mets at .500 for the next several years. Both Branca and Thompson were local NY guys. Branca from Mt. Vernon and Thompson Staten Island. Years later Branca's son-in-law was Bobby Valentine. Astroturf infield at Al Lang benefited Cardinals more than Mets but did cut down on rainouts. That "consistent long ball" didn't materialize till Kingman arrived, yet another G-ants 'bailout' in '75. Singleton didn't mature as a hitter for several years. Don Hahn was never noted for his stick. During the '73 series a NY writer mentioned that Hahn's glove was "...so good that he should take it up to the plate when hitting..." Fregosi wasn't a 3rd baseman, never playing that position in majors. All-star at short he was on the turn down physically and Angels knew it, penciled into outfield and 1st in '71. M.D. Grant 'pushed' for a move and with all the arms Mets assumed they had enough to let their patience run out on Ryan. Another factor mentioned in film was Wayne Garrett's military service at that time. Kranepool got his full-time chance after being sent to AAA in 1970 and made the most of it. Clendenon skills were fading and was giving more attention to his law practice and corporate work. The 9-9 vs. Expos and 7-11 with Cubs did 'em in.

I was 11 years old and a huge met fan, I still am. I was so sad when Gil Hodges died in spring training before the 72 season. I hope you upload that video. But really disturbs me is that MD Grant would not pay for $40,000 in his contract and traded him away to the Reds for crap.

M. Donald Grant is to me what Walter O.Malley was to Dodgers fans in Brooklyn. Grant destroyed the Mets out of pure spite.

I remember them showing these films on Channel 9 during rain delays. I used to think they were more fun to watch than the games. 70 & 71 were kind of bland years for NY baseball. The Mets & Yankees were so middle-of-the-road, not bad but not very good. But that's looking back. I was only 9-10 years old so wanted to go to the games and didn't care who was playing or how good they were. I think those two years we went to more games than any time when I was a kid, both at Yankee Stadium & Shea. I'd be curious to see Yankee highlight films from that time because you never saw them anywhere while the Mets were always out there pitching them. I wonder if the Yankees even bothered to make any.

The NYM were big on public relations. The Yankees were not. CBS owned the Yankees and they already were moving in the direction of selling the club and thus why spend money on highlight films, let alone better players?

I geeked when the Mets got Willie Mays in '73. Even though he made some mistakes in the World Series, I didn't care I mean he's Willie Mays!

Thanks for posting. Wish the quality of film/video was better. The trade for Fregosi turned out to be one of the worst the Mets made. The following year Gil Hodges unexpectedly died, but fortunately Yogi took over and turned out to be a good manager for the Mets who almost won the World Series in 1973.

Mets had no depth, that's why they didn't win the pennant in 71 + 72 to compensate for those injuries.
