Imagine going into the AFC Championship Game without a kicker on your roster. Well, at the 1982 AFC Championship between the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets, that's sort of what happened with Miami. Due to an injury by Dolphins kicker Uwe von Schamann, and bizarre roster rules that left all rosters frozen at the end of the regular season, the Dolphins were left with 0 kickers on their team going into their biggest game of the season. And chaos ensued because of it. This is the story behind the 1982 Dolphins and the bizarre controversy that took place before the game

I call this game "Shula's Revenge" considering that the Jets gave him possibly the worst moment of his career at this very same stadium in Super Bowl III. Didn't help that Richard Todd forgot that AJ Duhe wasn't a Jets receiver...

I'm so relieved that the NFL finally discovered common sense and allowed its clubs to sign players after the regular season ends. I'm not sure how von Schamann was able to play in the AFCCG, but he found a way!

I suspect the NFL did that because of the injury. I remember a couple of years later a team signing a player for a wild card game where they were facing the Giants in The Meadowlands and the New York papers made a big deal of that.

Kickers were so much more important back then, and as a kid I knew every teams kicker like I knew every team’s quarterback. A few notables here, I miss the old jets uniforms, that was a great time to be a football fan. The nfl was so much fun in that period between so many great juggernauts. The Steelers & Cowboys had gotten old, the 49ers were not yet the unbeatable force they would become. Being a Steelers fan, I did enjoy watching these games, especially after thinking there might not even be a season in 82

Yes! I can still name most of the kickers and what team they played on in 82. Remember it was in 1983 (the video said 82 but I thought it was 83, I'll have to look it up) that Mark Mosley won the MVP. As a Dolphins fan, I never trusted Von Schaman after the two misses (well blocked FG) against the Chargers the year before. But he was a decent kicker.

40 years later and this game still hurts. I truly thought the Jets were going to the Super Bowl. Miami defeated the Jets three times that season. As you said, Uwe replaced Garo a few years earlier. He was really good as you said earlier. How ironic that the Dolphins defense got so weak by 1984. From 1978 to 1981 the Jets were 7-0-1 vs Miami. But 0-3 in 1982. Excellent about a game in mid December. If Miami had not made that 47 yard field goal , the Jets could have been the 2 seed and hosted this game

This game, Shula ordered the field uncovered which left the field at the Orange Bowl in horrible shape. It played a huge part in why the Jets lost that game. The NFL after this I believe passed a rule the field has to be covered ahead of games in case unexpected weather hits. Never knew about this with von Schaman. This never was noted in the New York papers at the time.

Apparently, there was at least one season for the Wyoming Cavalry (an indoor team) had no kickers on their roster and just went for two after every touchdown. They got away with this because their league, the American Indoor Football Association, was loosely monitored from the league office, and they had to hire a kicker again when they moved to the better-run Indoor Football League.

Okay, I'm going to put my ignorance on display here for everyone to make fun of, but that's okay, asking questions is how you learn things. What, exactly is the rule now as far signing players off the street? The college season is over by the time the NFL playoffs come around, could you sign a senior who just completed his eligibility. And if you can do that, what's to prevent you from signing the top quarterback prospect as an "emergency substitute" and getting around the draft? I'm sure the scenario I described isn't legal, but what exactly is the rule that prevents it?

In the opening game of the 1950 season -- essentially the game that decided the 1949 championship, as the two leagues from 1949 had coalesced and the champions from each league were playing each other -- the Browns' great kicker Lou Groza got injured on the opening play and a fellow named Chubby Grigg had to take over the kicking duties. He went 5-for-5 on extra points and did not have to attempt a field goal as the Browns smashed the Eagles 35-10.

I was a college freshman and bet a Dolphins fan a 6 pack of beer over the game. When I saw that von Schamann was injured and doubtful, I doubled the bet. Then we turned on the game, saw the miserable conditions of the field, and realized the Jets were going to lose because their one advantage, team speed, was useless in the swamp that Shula had created by leaving the tarp off of the field the day before. The only lucky thing for me was that the Dolphins fan didn't have rich tastes. He was okay with two 6 packs of Budweiser to settle the bet.
