It was funny that the Vikings made the whole point moot by knocking off the Cowboys on Monday Night football that next week, despite Tony Dorsett busting out a 99 yard TD run. The Vikes would also get a home playoff win (their first in the Metrodome but their last home playoff game until 1988) against the Falcons before losing to the eventual Super Bowl Champ Washington in the conference semis

Thanks for making a playlist for your 1982 videos! It was the first season I started really paying attention.

Of course! I've got a History of the NFL playlist that has every video in chronological order from 1920-present, but I've also got individualized playlists for every year from 1970-1999 that are a bit easier to digest (I'm working on the rest of the years)

@@OfficialJaguarGator9 it's very much appreciated! I am going backwards through your videos, which is a lot of fun (and way way more constructive than getting lost in Facebook) and it's great to be able to binge on a specific subject if I want. As someone who grew up in the 80s, so many computer-ish bells and whistles still blow my mind--it's fun to get used to them but I never want to take them for granted!

So, I was watching this video on my TV. I was hit with 2 ads every minute (or less) . This completely destroyed the narrative of the video and my desire to continue watching in the middle of the 4th minute. This video and the channel has now missed the playoffs.

Tiebreakers for 1982: 1. head-to-head, if applicable (for ties involving 3 or more teams, head-to-head only applies if one team involved defeated each of the other teams involved, or if one team involved lost to each of the others involved) 2. conference record, If each of the teams involved played an equal number of conference games 3. record against common opponents (each team involved had to have played a minimum of three games against the same opponents) 4. conference record, regardless of number of conference games played 5. net points against all opponents 6. net TDs against all opponents 7. strength of schedule 8. coin toss
@kyle19102 жыл бұрын
Also in 1982, unlike most seasons, the tiebreaking rules made it so that more than one team could be slotted into specific playoff positions with the same tiebreaking step.
@NosferatusCoffin2 жыл бұрын
The difference here is that, unlike normal tiebreakers back then, where the divisional record was the #2 tiebreaker, that was thrown out and conference record moved up from the third to the second tiebreaker. Due to divisional records being tossed out the window that season.

Ah, the 1982 season: the gift that keeps on giving. That's a crazy way to find out you made the playoffs! Those Vikings had to feel relieved when they found out, especially after they handed the Jets that game.

For me fall 1982 was a happy time in my personal life. I don’t view this particular season objectively. As. Jets fan it was heartbreaking to lose to Miami 3 times but they did win 2 playoff games . Their first win in the postseason since 1968. I remember so many teams with 3 or 4 wins were in contention for a spot. I clearly remember watching this game too. Remember computers were not as widely used or as good as they are now and no divisions. The Vikings wound up as the 4 seed and won a playoff game that year. Personally for me I was a freshman in college, I made the dean's list. I was the first person in my family to even make it to college.

Fortunately only two 4-5 teams made the Super Bowl tournament. Browns in AFC and Lions in NFC. First time ever teams with a losing record made it. Of course this was because eight teams per conference qualified.

I was 9 in 1982 and was already a NFL nut !! I loved the Cowboys and my hometown Patriots. But especially the cowboys in 1982. Though it was a short year !! What a year. Dorsett's 99 yard run - the snowplow game - the Dallas Redskin rivalry John Riggins - a kicker winning MVP. I just loved being a kid and watching the NFL Today etc.. I can watch NFL footage from the late 70's early 80's all day and night. And thank you for your posts

This would never happen today, everything gets super analyzed so even the most obscure for tie breaking situations are looked at well before the week starts
@stevevernon19782 жыл бұрын
and this 1982 Charlie Foxtrot scenario is part of WHY everything is analyzed to death in advance. JG9 shows that the Vikings couldn't be knocked out of the playoffs in less than 18 minutes; and the NFL can't figure that out in the ENTIRE WEEK before this game.

I think the 2022/2023 AFC playoff scenario is going to have asterisks all over it. The Bills and Bengals are both division leaders with one week left to go in the regular season. But, both those teams will play one fewer games in the season than every other team in the league. The NFL might have to play a conference final game at a neutral site. It's all messed up.

You have to keep in mind they actually had to sit down with a note pad and pen and figure out all the scenarios and tie breakers back in those days. Back then it wasn't an instant gratification world. You actually had to be patient and crunch the numbers. Now we have a computer and an algorithm that calculates everything instantly. Even the fans have this thing called the Playoff machine and Playoff predictor that's online that you can play with and do your own whacky scenarios. but yeah, even then, you'd think the NFL would've been a bit more on top of it.

So did they not have head-to-head as a tie-breaker that season due to the missing games unbalancing the schedule? Or was it just impossible that the Vikings would be tied with only one team?

The Vikings played only two of those other teams mentioned and won both those games, giving them the tie breaker in any possible head to head situations.

'82 was crazy nine game strike shortened season. nfl couldn't do normal head to head tie breakers because sked was a mess. some teams didn't play their division foes twice (8 game total for five team divisions) plus next tie breaker conf. record was uneven as well. two 4-5 teams. lions and browns, got in. and redskins as became the norm won their first of two strike shortened season titles. the only team to do it. defending champ niners didn't even make the 16 team 'tournament' going 3-6. and jets led by the sack exchange were a factor that season. and remember the vike/boys game that ended season a week later on mnf and got vikes in? 'and there goes to-ny dor-sett'. 'oh no 99 and one half yards...' longest td run until henry tied it.
@scottdavidson99632 жыл бұрын
Not a big deal. Conference records has always made a difference. Minnesota was just informed later; which a fopa by the NFL. The other point is it was not a weak playoff. Washington, Dallas, Raiders, Dolphins, Bengals Green Bay (yes) and Jets (made the AFC Championship game) had legitimate shot a winning Super Bowl.
