Before the 1982 NFL season, after the Atlanta Falcons cut WR Wallace Francis, the New England Patriots claimed him, hoping that he could be the missing piece to their offense that needed help at receiver. What followed was a bizarre saga where no one knew where he was, and a religious retreat leading to a shocking result. This is the story behind the 1982 Patriots and the craziest waiver claim ever

Wallace Francis was from Franklin, Louisiana. It's close to New Orleans, so that might be why he mentioned the Saints.

I was a young Falcons fan in 1982. I had no idea about any of the drama after he was cut. I remember the rumors that the Falcons would release him after the season. I remember him saying to a reporter, “I one more year, just one more year”. It seemed as though he was asking the team to keep him one more year and let him retire.

This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made videos about the following: 1. How Eddie LeBaron retired as a player in 1958, yet played until 1963. 2. How TE Walter White fled to a cabin in New Hampshire after the Chiefs traded him to the Cardinals. 3. How WR Walter Murray changed his mind three times as to whether to cross the picket line during the 1987 strike.

7:22 I was on Francis's side all the way until I saw him listing the Saints as one of the teams that wanted to win. Like, seriously dude?!?! To list them as a team that wanted to win in '81 was a joke. The only explanation I have for Francis even saying this is that the Saints had just hired Bum Phillips so they must've "seemed" serious about winning to him. OJG9 was absolutely right to go off about this. I actually paused the video to comment on how absurd that statement was before hearing the rant BTW.

You could do a ton of these stories about the Billy Sullivan era Pats. One of the worst owners in sports history. Some of the low lights: He borrowed $10,000. to buy the original franchise. Never had the money to operate it. John Hannah and Leon Grey, all pro left tackle and guard. Didn't realize how underpaid they were until talking to the other linemen at the pro bowl. Demanded to be paid like other all pros. So they traded Grey. Cowboys rb Duane Thomas traded to the Pats. After one practice quit because the coach wanted him in a three point stance, and he refused. And the best of all, Billy's son financing the Michael Jackson tour. What they didn't realize is Jackson's stage took up about 20,000 seats for every concert, thereby bankrupting the Sullivans, and forcing a sale.

So, what was the best bit of encouragement given by a coach to a player ever, turning a bust into a star, or if they stayed a bust, at least off field turn them from a bum to a decent member of society. That would be wholesome and quite fun too!

The Falcons had a great trio of receivers in Francis, Alfred Jenkins, and Alfred Jackson. Their replacements were simply not as good. It wasn’t until the late 80’s/early 90’s that they rebuilt the receiving corp.

Side note: The 1977 Falcons had one of the greatest defenses in modern NFL history. Unfortunately, their quarterbacks played not 1, not 2, not 3, not even 4, but 5 games that were worse than if they did nothing but spike the ball into the ground the entire game, including four from Steve Bartkowski…in a 14 game season. No, I am not making this up.

Solid NFL career for WR Wallace Francis (89) out of Arkansas AM&N (now UAPB). Two kickoff returns for TDs his rookie year on OJ Simpson’s record-setting rushing year (1973). Bills weren’t doing a whole lot of passing the two years he was in Buffalo. A lot of big plays as a Falcon.

Because of their terrible past, no one wanted to join the Saints. They signed the best of the cast offs and made due. When Bum Phillips came on board, he had a winning attitude. He just needed solid players around him. Francis could have added a new dimension to that offense. They may have actually had a winning season.

The biggest problem for the 1981 Patriots is that they forgot how to win: 14 losses, and only a negative point differential of -48, which I feel is quite uncommon. Grogan only played in 8 games and struggled when he did, the defense was soft, and there were questions of leadership in regards to coaching and management. This season was an aberration though, and in every other season between 1976-1988 they were a factor (now the Baltimore Colts of the same era post-1977 were annually a bad team).
