Quick story. Steinfort started as a Raider in 1976 and actually won a game with a last second kick in his first game with the Raiders vs the defending world champion Steelers. My dad was a Raiders season ticket holder and I taped the end of that game from the radio at home for him so he could listen to the radio call of Steinfort’s game winning kick. Steinfort kicked pretty well until he hurt his hip and missed 2 extra points in a game vs Green Bay later that year and didn’t play the rest of the season. I went to 3 games with my dad in that 76 season, Denver, San Diego and the first round playoff game vs New England which is still my favorite sporting event I’ve ever attended.

I saw the box score for the Raiders Packers game in 1976, all extra points were misses and wondered why Steinfort had missed 2 and Ray Guy had to try one.

Leading up to their game against the Raiders in 1976, Chester Marcol hurt himself while kicking left footed in practice, trying (who knows why) to mimic Steinfort who was left footed. In case Marcol couldn't go the next week against Detroit, the Packers signed Errol Mann who the Lions had cut the week before. The week after that, the Packers released Mann, and the Raiders signed him to replace the afore-mentioned Steinfort who was cut by the Raiders after playing hurt for quite a while. Steinfort replaced George Blanda in Oakland, and Blanda wanted to keep playing, but there was some rule that prevented the Raiders from bringing him back. Mann kicked for Oakland until 1978.

Namath was a big personality. He got in solely on fame and the one upset Super Bowl over the colts. I honestly don’t think either belong in the hall. Eli has two super bowl wins like Plunkett and a much better career but is gonna be a borderline guy when eligible.

@@MrRyan-wu4jx that’s a fair assessment. I wonder Trent Dilfer has a SB ring would that put him in with the same place as Namath? The defense helped Dilfer in the SB. As far as Namath I think the running game helped him. Some say Boozer and Snell made the difference...I don’t know

There must have been a mishandled snap on the extra point in this game resulting in a failed pass attempt for an extra point. Maybe the problem was with the snapper and/or holder as well in addition to the kicker.

The real takeaway is how that 1981 Raiders offense was so inept, it kept looking this gift horse in the mouth and trying to pull teeth out. Denver was DYING to give this one away, and Oakland just refused to take it.

Back in those days, coaches were more patient with kickers. Maybe too much so. I am a Viking fan. Fred Cox kicked for the Vikings probably five years too long. At the end of his career, he could not even kick off to reach the ten yard line. So he squib kicked. Ridiculous. He was great when it did not matter. He missed too much under pressure. Back in those days, coaches stuck with their guys.
@ryanjacobson2508

It was treated less like a business back then. Veterans who had a reputation as hard workers and solid character guys could stick on a roster for a good 10-15 years, often years beyond the point where a new younger player probably would've performed better. If you look at team rosters over the years, before the 90's rosters tended to be older, and the NFL draft was much less hyped since rookies didn't get as much playing time as they do now.

@@ryanjacobson2508 Right. I'm 60 years old, so I remember when free agency first hit baseball hard in the 70s. The Twins became a AAA farm team for the Yankees and the Angels. That didn't hit the NFL as hard, but it did have an effect. You saw more guys wanting out if the pay wasn't there. I can't say I blamed them. Rosters changed a lot more.

@@rocknroll7065 The AFC was a much weaker conference than the NFC from the mid-1980's thru mid-1990's. The Raiders, Steelers, and Dolphins, who dominated the 70's, slid into mediocrity or worse as the 80's went on. I guess Reeves deserves credit for rising above the mediocrity, but there's a reason Denver kept getting blown out in the Superbowl.
