Pass deep 3 times in your own end zone with a concussed quarterback instead of playing for overtime. Genius
During week 5 of the 2024 NFL season between the Buffalo Bills and the Houston Texans, with the game tied at 20, the Bills decided to let Josh Allen throw nothing but deep passes in a situation where it made no sense to do so. It ended up costing Sean McDermott and company the game. This is a breakdown of that dumb decision

@neildalessandro8196
@neildalessandro8196 7 сағат бұрын
Absolutely not. Have you seen how much worse Belichick was without Tom Brady? Besides, he and Allen wouldn't mesh very well because Belichick ran the Patriots more like it was a boot camp whereas Allen thrives by being relaxed and letting loose and playing like the world's biggest, strongest, fastest toddler. You know how the Chiefs became a dynasty? I'll give you a hint, it wasn't by becoming a clone of the Patriots. It was by becoming the best version of themselves they could be. Same goes for what the Bills need in order to win it all.

Bills fan here. Something happens to Mcdermotts brain in close games against good teams. It’s REALLY depressing to have one of the finest qbs of all time and he has to work against his coach, and with terrible wideout options. Mack hollins is not an NFL wideout and he had SEVEN targets. Barf

The dumbness was even better rewinding one series. I knew this ending would land on DD by JG9, but it was a battle of dumb decisions where Houston went from being in game winning FG position, where all they needed to do was sneak twice, run the clock down to 4 seconds, and kick… to punting! It was briefly mentioned, but a Dueling Dumb Decisions would have been nice to see.

The moment I saw this ending, I knew it would be here. Houston's punt at midfield was a tough decision that was ultimately correct, but I do not think Ryans foresaw this decision leading to the game being handed to him on a silver platter.
@quigonkenny
@quigonkenny 12 сағат бұрын
The Texans punt was the only decision, after the Dumb Decision on the previous play resulted in an intentional grounding and being knocked out of field goal range on a play that never should have been a pass play in the first place. Credit to Texans special teams, as they nailed the punt, and eventually the long field goal that ended up winning it, but TBH it never should have happened. They should have run the ball on third down, took the clock down to 3-4 sec and spent one of their time outs, then kicked the field goal from about 10 yards closer than they ended up doing. The only way the Bills should have even gotten the ball back is if they'd missed the kick (unlikely, the way Fairbairn is playing this season) and the game had gone to OT.
@SPTO
@SPTO 13 сағат бұрын
It was one of the worst clock management situations i've ever seen. I was thinking "Okay, let's play for OT" and THAT happens. McDermott is rightfully getting roasted by Bills Mafia. A lot of fans are getting tired of how McD and his staff has consistently come up small in big situations to the point that they're legit calling for his head.

The Bills offense was inept all game, with the exception of the first field goal drive and the third quarter. McDermott is good at making dumb decisions, but this game was lost long before this drive. And as bad as the offense was playing, trying to take it to OT felt more like delaying the inevitable instead of giving the Bills a chance to win. The passing game was off all game and the running game was doing nothing late in the game. Their field goal drive in the 4th quarter was a red zone start and they gained zero yards in a situation where they should have been able to convert the starting field position into a TD.

A few things: only two of the three passes were deep. Two were intermediante (a back shoulder and a in - that was there). None of the concepts were four verts. The only thing that makes this a dumb decesion was the play and heath status of the QB. Better run three times.

And it’s a less dumb decision when you consider that Houston had all 3 timeouts. They would have stopped the clock with 3 straight run attempts. This one isn’t that bad aside from the last passing play, and at least these were good shots to take. Dumb decision, but not as bad as it looks for sure

I agree with those aaying running the ball in that situation might also have been a bad idea, given the penetration of the Texans D all day made a TFL and thus a safety (which ends the game) about a 50/50 proposition, but what they did do was at least as wrong. They ahould have never let Allen get back in for that last "drive". McDRRmitt should have had Trubisky throwing short, high percentage passes to at least get far enough away from the end zone that a safety was unlikely, then pound the rock on the Texans' weary D-line to maybe get a first down and go to OT. Probably still would have been a three-and-out, but at least the punter would have had enough room to get off a decent kick, and maybe start the Texans on the other side of the field rather than already at rhe edge of Fairbairn's range.

What was really infuriating was not only that the Bills receivers couldn't catch the ball to save their lives (which is why Allen completed so few passes), but the fact that earlier in the game Dalton Kincaid caught a pass that was incorrectly ruled incomplete, and McDermott didn't challenge it. Even the announcers were surprised he didn't challenge it. It cost the Bills that drive when it could've led to another score.

As a Texans I’m glad McDermott bungled this drive and is the subject of this video… because it just as easily could have been the decision Bobby Slowik made the drive before this by throwing on 3rd down inside FG range, not only not burning clock to allow Buffalo to get the ball back in the first place, but that play wound up as a grounding penalty on Stroud which took away the Texans FG opportunity entirely. If the Texans ran the ball on that play and took the clock down to 5s, even if they didn’t gain any extra yardage, it would have been a 45ish yard attempt for Fairbairn to win the game.. not a chip shot, but if his 59 yard kick that actually ended the game has anything to say… he would have made that kick with little effort. That dumb decision to throw there by Slowik just as easily could have cost the Texans a sure fire win by throwing the game into OT where anything could have happened. Just an absolutely inexcusable play call there by the Texans OC

I think Coach's comment about relevance was more about his thinking that OC Brady might need to be fired. The question was whether he agreed with the call, not "why did you make the call." I don't know the communication process between the OC, Coach, and Allen. Does Coach have veto power on the play call? There's only so many seconds for that type of communication to happen. Coach knows the relevance of the sequence, but he didn't want to publicly get into a situation over personnel matters. Wouldn't Coach tell the OC, "Get me a first down." and then leave it to the OC to make that happen? I think this debacle belongs on OC Brady, especially if Coach gave him the authority. Rather than fire Coach, I bet Brady gets fired.

Sean McDermott is increasingly revealing himself to be not just a bad in-game manager, but a terrible leader as well. No head coach worth their salt brushes off a question about the pivotal play call that cost their team the game without, at best, coming off as utterly clueless about the concepts of time and spatial awareness, or at worst, coming off as a scummy power-grabber looking to evade accountability for their own fuckups. Between this and his botched 9/11 speech, he needs to go before Josh Allen retires ringless.

How about running three times, then a slow intentional safety (scramble in the end zone until they catch you). You'd get to kick from almost 30 yards further out, and they have no timeouts. I realize a field goal would win it outright for the Texans then, but their odds of getting one would be tiny. A long ways to go with almost no time and no timeouts.
