This is very similar to what happened a decade later in the first year of MLS. Because the league was brand new, every team had an expansion draft to fill out their rosters. For the NY/NJ Metrostars they really wanted to draft two Brazilians Juninho Paulista & Tulio Costa which they did even though there was very little information on both of them. However like Reggie Bynum, both Paulista & Costa refused to turn up to pre-season training camp because they wanted to be paid a $1 million salary a season not the $30,000 league minimum that MLS told clubs to pay players for that first season & threatened to sit out a season & wait until 1997 to enter MLS. It should be pointed out that the reason why MLS initially had this in place was to prevent clubs from overspending on player salaries which was one of the main reasons why MLS's predecessor the NASL collapsed. Because both Paulista & Costa failed to turn up for training camp, the Metrostars quickly did a 180 and said they never actually drafted both of them since they did not show up. Then the Metrostars waived both of them about a week before the season started. It is easily one of the most bizarre contract sagas in MLS history.

Gary McDermott, Buffalo's ninth round pick in 1968, was a rookie RB on a team that went 1-12-1; earning the first pick in the 1969 draft, one O.J. Simpson. When O.J. got to the Bills, he had to wear #36, as McDermott was wearing #32. McDermott was cut after the first preseason game, allowing O.J. to claim #32. You can find pictures online of the Juice in a #36 jersey.

One of the most underrated factors in the NFL success today. Is the rookie salary cap. As JAG man said rookies, don’t hold out they are going to get paid what they get paid based on they are drafted. And that’s it. I remember back of the day when rookies drafted in the first round would hold out until opening day. It was sickening. They had not proven anything in football. Now a rookie has to prove himself for three years before he can start making the big money.

Do you know Craig Erickson was drafted in the 5th round in 1991 and then the 4th round in 1992? So he improved his draft status by aitting oit the year. Hell in that same 1986 draft Matt Darwin was drafted in the 4th round, after being taken in the fifth round in the 1985 draft!! So the strategy of sitting out a year, even without college eligibility, can improve your draft status!

You start of singing the praises of Bynum, but then he got drafted in the 9th. Any idea what scared off scouts? In retrospect, his decision making is questionable, but what made them scared off by a productive WR.

In 1986, the NFL was NOT necessarily your best option. He had injury issues that tends to make the NFL even a worse choice. You need to look at what other career options besides football he had. Was he a college graduate? In what field? Maybe he would make less but given the amount of pain and hard work you got to put in to make it in the NFL, he might have needed a premium to make it a logical option.

@@glensmith491 Nah he wanted to play in the NFL (he even signed with the Bills in 1987 once he realized how stupid this was). This wasn't like the Hontas video I did. He just genuinely thought this was a good idea and the best way to go about it

When you are unlikely to make the final cut, that's the same as "nothing to lose"... Therefore, this is a serious non-story ... Do a video on the one trade I just realized was even MORE preposterous than the Herschel Walker trade... And what trade is that? The compensation sent to the Rams for #EricDickerson ... Andre Rison & Chris Hinton (two young stars at the time) and FOUR 1st round picks. (All of them being high picks because the Colts have been all-time horrible in drafting between the 70's and 90's

The college player drafted despite saying he wouldn't play in the league, because games were on played on sunday which is God's day, but eh Raiders drafted him anyways thinking the temptation of money would overcome his religion's belief, but it didn't and the Raiders ... looked stupid... again
