Snyder definitely remembers Independence Air! Or more precisely, he remembers the Independence Air bankruptcy sale. Snyder acquired a supply of peanuts at that sale that he would later provide to fans at FedEx. The problem, you ask? This supply had apparently exceeded its proverbial "born on" date by the time the supply was distributed. There's a legendary Washington DC City Paper article that covers this and other "accomplishments" of Snyder. (Just Google search on "City Paper article Dan Snyder."). Or so the story goes...

As a Philadelphian, I listen to alot of sports radio. And one time on the former midday show on 94WIP, with Joe Decamara & Jon Ritchie, guest, analyst and former lineman, Ross Tucker tells a story from his time in Washington. And it goes, on a team flight, the team formerly known as the REDSKINS, had a player by the name of Darrell Gardner who I believe played LB. And on that flight, a few rows in front of fairly new team owner Daniel Snyder and his wife, Gardner is watching hardcore porn on a portable DVD player while Synder and his wife sat in silence the whole damn flight... Ross said, "right then he knew Daniel Snyder wouldn't make it as a owner" 😂😂

That's messed up. Snyder should have known Jurgensen would allow it. Sonny Jurgensen is grateful for his accomplishments and doesn't have the sort of ego that he'd refuse someone a number that wasn't even retired. If Snyder, who was a Redskins fan long before he owned them, didn't want anyone wearing Sonny's number, HE should have told Matthews no and not dragged Jurgensen himself into it. And honestly, I don't know why he didn't just retire those numbers officially. This is someone who went out of his way to issue Super Bowl rings to the 1987 replacement players (the ReplaceSkins went 3-0) a quarter-century after the fact.

I was covering Central PA news back when the team now known as the Commanders did training camp in Carlisle, PA. Until Snyder got there, training camp was free and open to the public. Suddenly, you had to pay 10 bucks a head (even the kids) to watch a day of training camp. People were not happy with that. It made Snyder look like a cheap owner who was looking to fleece the fans, before the team even played a game under his ownership. It didn't get better from there, did it?

Barry Switzer had some success over the first three seasons as Dallas Cowboys HC and won Super Bowl XXX. Granted, it was mostly all still Jimmy Johnson's players, assistants, but those wins are still his, whether we like it or not. Also, Jimmy Johnson originally was a very successful NCAAF HC at Oklahoma State and Miami for nearly a decade before his former Arkansas college roommate and teammate, Jerry Jones, hired him to become his new HC after buying Dallas Cowboys. This was, of course, after he treated legendary Cowboys HC Tom Landry like old, disposable trash and unceremoniously threw him away like trash outside of the Cowboys headquarters.

Same argument goes for Dick Vermeil with UCLA and then later successfully rebuilt, re-molded perennial loser Philadelphia into a winning playoff contender, eventually reaching Super Bowl XV in 1981, then burning out and retiring and working as a CBS NCAAF/ NFL broadcaster for the next 14 years, then helped rebuild the St. Louis Rams into a near-dynasty team from 1999-2003, then rebuilt the Kansas City Chiefs into a playoff contender.

Dan Snyder is one of the most toxic owners in the history of the NFL. The guy screwed up everything he did. The only time he kinda stepped back was when a clearly past his prime Joe Gibbs was the HC. The guy even picked a fight with legendary college coach Steve Spurrier by forcing him to throw Patrick Ramsey out there on a permanent basis. Hell, in Spurrier's 2nd year he couldn't even name his own starting QB. It was dictated by Snyder. Spurrier probably would've failed (or at least been subpar) but we don't know for sure because of Snyder's BS. The sad thing is, Snyder probably would still be the owner if he didn't do the shit he did over the last couple years. ESPN did a lengthy investigation. Snyder had embarrassing e-mails of league office people, owners etc etc. The guy tried to take down the entire league just so he could keep the team. I'm glad his plan completely backfired.

As much as I love said combination, he didn't "take it away" as much as "left it to the coaches"...only Schottenheimer and Shanahan (who I'm quicker to forgive because the burgundy jerseys-gold pants look was also awesome) completely abandoned that look: Spurrier and Zorn used it early + blueshirt (white at home to force the Cowboys into blue jerseys), Gibbs fully restored the white-at-home dynamic he fostered (as the Chargers' OC in '79 and '80, he bought into Don Coryell's theory that a dark number on a white jersey was easier for a QB to spot than the other way around), Gruden mostly stuck to Shanahan's uniforms but blueshirted the Cowboys in his last two seasons.

While I usually love your channel, this one I have issues with. First, the 1st coach he hired was schottenheimer, and the team was full of past their prime vets on big fa deals. They started 0-5, and the td/int was 2-6 in those games. They went 8-3 from then on and qb play improved (still wasn't good). Bets like Bruce Smith loved Marty, and then jacka$$ Snyder fired him for Spurrier. You usually don't have factual errors. I grew up as friends with Brian schottenheimer and their whole family was good people. RIP Marty

Even with this sale, there will always be those who felt the NFL should have "righted a wrong" by buying the team and stadium from Snyder and giving the team back to the Cooke Family that some STILL feel should be the rightful owners of the team and their being allowed to change the name if they want. Many felt the Cookes were swindled out of the then-Redskins by Snyder as the auction where Snyder got the team was designed by Jack Kent Cooke for John Kent Cooke (his son) to get the team without having to pay MASSIVE inheritance taxes and make money for charities. The elder Cooke failed to envision a scenario where someone else would swoop in and buy the team as Snyder did pay a then-record $240 Million of so in 1999. One thing I would do if I had gotten the now-Commanders is to immediately change the name to the Senators, the name of the two former baseball franchises in Washington through 1971, working with the Texas Rangers (who were the second Senators from 1961-'71) to get the rights to the name if necessary as well as the old second Senators logo that I would modify for the NFL.

Ever since the late '90s, I have not been a fan of Snyder. One of those two playoff wins in his time with the Commanders was at the Buccaneers and his club was lucky to win that game and unsurprisingly lost in Seattle the following weekend. With Snyder out of the mix, maybe the Commanders can finally move back to DC. They need to get up out of FedEx Field.

If a sizable amount of the Native American population is having major issues with it, their feelings can't be thrown to the side as if they're nothing. Also, at a certain point, the name wasn't marketable anymore. The name was left off certain special promotional merchandise in the years leading up to the name change, which should tell you something. When Amazon and other retailers took down the club's merch and FedEx threatened to kill its naming rights deal for the club's stadium, only then did Snyder do the right thing. It took possibly messing with his money (PepsiCo and Nike, the NFL's apparel partner, were pressured to cut ties with the club) to make the necessary change and that's sad.

It only became a problem when 44 went into office and people went brain dead and became offended over everything. Hell, even a peanut butter and jelly sandwich was considered racist. Why target the Redskins and not the Atlanta Braves? Better yet, why aren't we changing the names of several cities? Alot of them have references to Native Americans. Oconomowoc, WI is a good example. How about Atoka, Oklahoma? This generation makes no sense. They think if they cancel something it no longer exists, but the fact remains, that history repeats itself and wouldn't if the racist fools and idiots would stop trying to sweep history under the rug. See? I can write a novel too. When people write war and peace novels thinking their word count has importance, I can do the same.

National protests of the club's name began way back in 1988 (back end of the Ronald Reagan administration) after the Super Bowl XXII title. Tons of Native Americans urged then-owner Jack Kent Cooke through letters to change the name, but he obviously didn't. When investments firms worth $620B successfully enticing major companies to yank their financial (and in Nike's case, apparel) support is what it takes for Snyder to realize that he needed to make the change that should've made long ago, that tells you where his head is. Also, this isn't about sweeping history under the rug. Don't get it twisted. It's about respecting people, especially vulnerable populations such as indigenous people.

Snyder is pretty putrid but, I am not sure that he is the worst of all time. Snyder has real stiff competition. William Clay Ford of Detroit, The McCasky family in Chicago and Hugh Culverhouse of Tampa Bay, Bob Irsay of the Colts, Victor Kiam of New England, Leon Hess of the Jets and the Bidwell family of the Cardinals were pretty awful. An obscure example was Giles and Connell Miller who owned the Dallas Texans in 1952. According to Art Donovan, the coaches, players and staff had to stop practice and race to the bank to deposit their paychecks. If you were not one of the first to deposit your check then there was a good chance that it would bounce. Having said that I think Hugh Culverhouse could be the worst or second worse. Maybe Snyder #1A and Culverhouse could be 1B or maybe vice versa. Bob Irsay could be argued to be the biggest A-hole but, then again this could be a tie or a 1A and 1B situation. Who do you think are the top 5 or top 10 worst NFL Team owners?

For me the Washington Warriors, however I have another suggestion is to have the team named after Linganore High School located up in Frederick MD. Linganore High’s mascots is the Lancers , whose uniforms are modeled after the Washington Redskins Jerseys of the 1960s and that of Florida State University Seminoles football Jerseys. Linganore High School isn’t just that I am alumni from there, but #79 offensive tackle for the LA Rams Rob Havenstein is and is currently the highest paid Offensive lineman in the NFL. So it would be both a tribute and an reference.

I would say to the New owners of the Commanders/Redskins you are better off changing and rebranding the team. Back in December 2022 I was working down in Tysons Corner Virginia which is just outside Washington DC. I remember talking to the Manager of the local Lids and few of the local sports stores in the Tysons Corner mall and one time when I was Dulles and in Fairfax VA. Most of the Managers and owners of these places as I had heard they were still getting stuff from the warehouse that they were supposed to get 2 years ago but was delayed because of Covid-19. They told me that No one within Northern Virginia and even in Maryland wants Commanders merchandise, they all were mostly asking for any left over Washington Redskins stuff. That should give you an idea as to how badly botched the Renaming went, and most younger people and new comers to the Washington DC area (the DMV) have no idea that the Washington Redskin from the 1960s until the start of the 2010s were 2nd most valuable team in the NFL 🏈 🤑 , which was one of the reason why it took so long to rebrand to begin with. It would be like someone buying the Los Angles Lakers 🏀 one of the biggest and most valuable team in the NBA and renaming them Los Angles Stars after the defunct ABA team, because the New owner felt that the name Lakers connected way to much to their former home of Minneapolis. How do you think the Laker fan base would react 🤔? If Snyder changed the name earlier he would have lost more money 💸 then he did, by changing the name before the start of the 2020 preseason to WFT and then Commanders. Also, how Snyder went about the name change only further angered and divided the fan base, because he choose the Washington Commanders name a name that no fan wanted or liked. As I was a supporter of the early fan favorite The Washington Warriors, others included Red Wolves, Red Tails, Redhawks, Renegades. Snyder ignored the fan favorites because I suspect it had to do with right issues and choose the Commanders name which no wanted or likes.

@@Rutherford12 very good point not having the copyright to the name is pretty bad but It is becoming clear that It was disappointing that they couldn’t get the copyright claim now people can use commanders for anything including merchandise I do believe The new owners are going to try to make the rebrand work and if it doesn’t work, they know they can’t go back to the old name so they’ll have a name the team contest so they’re in a little bit of a tough position financially they’re in a lot of debt to Snyder they have to pay all of Snyders lawsuits and the fact that they have to rebuild an entire organization I think it’s just too much time and effort to just fix the name. They got more pressing issues to deal with. They gotta fix the stadium or get a new one. They gotta put a winner back on the field. They gotta deal with the lawsuits they gotta get back to trust of DC and the fans.
