Well for starters that scene wasn't even in the comic. The entire batgirl segment of the movie was put in to expand the movies run time as The Killing Joke is a really short story.

Well, it's true children do/did love comic series, but today you'll find that true kid friendly comics are next to nonexistent if you go to a true comic book store. Such a shame too, for they always made great gifts for little ones.

Comic books were written for and marketed almost exclusively to children for decades. Look at the ads; sea monkeys, toy soldiers, model cars, X-ray glasses, switchblade combs, BB guns, bikes, Legos, bubble bath, bubble gum, breakfast cereals, cartoons, Happy Meals, Smurfs, selling seeds and Grit, etc. Comic books were originally reprints of the Sunday funnies, and new material was eventually added to supplement it. It wasn't until the sixties that publishers started trying to keep their readers interested as they got further into their teens and twenties. Even then, they had to be in compliance with the Comics Code and didn't make things "too adult" to alienate younger readers. The truly "adult" comics started popping up in the eighties, were few in number, and generally outside the mainstream.

Highly inappropriate: When they introduced Supergirl in 1959-60, they made her Superman's cousin, and also 12 years old, so there wouldn't be pressure from readers to pair them off (and mess up the Lois Lane romance storyline). So within 3-4 years of introducing Supergirl as a character they had a story where Superman meets a super-alien babe who just happens by some wild coincidence to look, act and sound exactly like Supergirl if she was, ahem, "OLDER." So then at the end of the story, the super alien babe disappears, and Superman explains to Supergirl (who by now is supposed to be 15-16), "Well of course I would love to marry YOU, you're so sweet and lovable, blah blah, but I Can't, because we're Cousins, and also you're not quite old enough!!!" To which Supergirl says, "Oh. Ummmm, okay." And then he also added something about Kryptonian customs not allowing cousins to marry, Although It Is Legal Some Places On Earth (Including 20 US States!?!), indicating Superman had probably spent Entirely Too Much Time thinking about this very subject. There was a New Mutants episode where Kitty Pryde uses the N word. X-Men and the spin-off New Mutants have often used the pages as an allegory to race relations. While the last one is pretty bad, but having read the comics, I think it's unfair to leave out that Invisible man first sexually assaulted Mina Harker, and that what Hide did was in part retaliation for that. The whole situation is more disturbing with the assault on Mina included, because Hide's outrage is justified and the reader feels that, but what he does about it is deeply upsetting and leaves the reader with the question, "what would you do if you caught the person responsible for hurting someone you cared about?"
