The name Tears for Fears comes from Primal Scream therapy. Both of the main band members were into that as teens and young adults. Tears For Fears is a phenomenal band with many styles. Excellent live performances. They started out as Post-Punk moved to New Wave/Synthpop (like most post-punk bands did in the mid-80's) but also threw in some jazz, and then went into Beatlesesque rock. They just released 3 new songs for an album being released next week ("Tipping Point", "No Small Thing" and "Break The Man.") The songs overal are in keeping with their signature sound but are a more modern take. But one song starts as a folk/country soung and progresses to a sort of chaotic rock sound.

I went to see the meaning behind this song and this what I found on Google Song was written during the Cold War era However, what the track is about in general is the lust for power and control and the destructive consequences which manifest as a result. Thus it is also believed that “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” contains references to George Orwell's classic book 1984. Then I found this "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" was banned for broadcast by the BBC for the duration of the first Gulf War (2 August 1990 - 28 February 1991) due to the song's political themes. I never knew any of this.

Tears for Fears are an English pop rock band formed in Bath, England, in 1981 by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. Founded after the dissolution of their first band, the mod-influenced Graduate, Tears for Fears were associated with the new wave synthesizer bands of the early 1980s, and attained international chart success. Tears for Fears were part of the MTV-driven Second British Invasion of the US.

In the comedy-drama TV series 'Psych', lead character Shawn Spenser frequently made reference to his favorite band: Tears For Fears. After the band was mentioned in the show a few times, Curt Smith (main singer in this video) became a returning guest on the series, playing himself three times. He also wrote & performed a Christmas-themed version of the series opening theme song for one episode. He was fun to see on the show. I recommend checking out those episodes.

(00:16) I think that a term used more often than "syn-pop" is "synth-pop." The "synth" refers to synthesizers which emerged as a popular instrument in bands in the early 1980s. When synthesizers were first used in popular music (60s and 70s) they were usually played like a keyboard and they accompanied the usual instruments (guitar, drums, etc). A development that made bands made up entirely of synthesizers possible was the emergence of MIDI. MIDI is an acronym that stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interfaceface. It allowed individual synthesizers to be connected and to play in synchronization together.

In my opinion their best song is Head Over Heels, I think you guys would like it. And just so you know, most people would just consider them 80's pop or new wave. Keep it up with these great videos ya'll.

Very good band. They are literally just about to release a new album ! Their biggest album was Songs from the Big Chair, and it's a masterpiece.

Nice reaction, great to see this song is still alive and kicking all these years later. Hard to believe it's nearly 40 years old. I would say, I wouldn't get too concerned about what genre this song is, or what genre TFF are - or what genre any other band or artist are really... they're all just labels really and nobody wants to be pigeonholed to one particular thing, and a good song is a good song right? Liked and subbed.
