Interesting fact. The part of the song near the end “father in to your hand, I commit my spirit” is a bible verse that Serj (lead singer) got while in Rick Rubins house and picked up a book from the shelf which was a bible and opened it up to that verse. He then used it in the song. Chop Suey named because they wouldn’t let them use Suicide title, so it’s a play on Suey cide and the funky rhythm of the song… hence, Chop Suey

System Of Down is probably my favorite group of this sub genre of metal. Neu Metal I guess is what it was called at the time. They push the edge of meniacal crazy. That guy you see on the street that just aint right but when you listen to him he starts making more and more sense. I love the way the song takes you in different directions until inside your kind of madcap laughing.

Chop Suey is a dish you basically make from whatever you have available, which is similar to the multiple styles the song switches between, saw someone already explained the name change but not the meaning behind the new name
@lordraiden12 жыл бұрын
I had read this song was called Chop suey for this reason. While it's a dish that sounds like it was made in Asia it's actually created by an American. So while it appears to be Chinese it's actually American and they use that as an analogy on suicide. How someone appears to be okay but in truth they really weren't.

System of a Down has political messages... but this one "Chopsuey!" (Chinese noodles dish) is typical of their sound... brash, unpredictable, and catchy as hell... the lyrics were just a mix of the death of Christ and random everyday thought process... 😂 They have a crazy sense of humor, especially if u hear SOAD songs like 'Cigaro' ... 'Toxicity' ... 'Bounce' ... 'Sugar'... a mix of punk rock, extreme metal, Mediterranean music, and Frank Zappa's quirky vibes. SOAD is Serj (vocals), Daron (guitar & vocals), Shavo (bass) & John (Dolmayan, drums)... They r 3rd generation Armenian-Americans from Cali. They were discovered by producer Rick Rubin in the 90's... their debut album was released in 1998, and sold steadily... Their second album 'Toxicity' in 2001 hit #1 on the charts, thanks to this single... 'Steal this album!' was the 3rd release in 2003... A 2-part album, 'Mesmerize' was released in 2005, followed by 'Hypnotize'. System of a Down have not released any new albums since then, but have toured occasionally... Serj Tankian (vocals) has been recording solo albums... Daron (guitar) has his project Scars on Broadway.

Fun fact: this song, like other songs by various bands in the 2001 radio stations registry, were banned since this single was published months ago before the 9/11 attack, causing the press to create controversy of the song since talks about death and suicide, adding the line that accompanies each stanza "I cry when angels deserve to die"

Because it talks about suicide, and I have no inside info, I always assumed "Chop Suey" was a symbolism for the Chinese dish which was created by Chinese Immigrants. Basically, it was just thrown together using leftovers and Americans assumed it was authentic Chinese food. So to me the metaphor was that we as humans are just flesh thrown in together into a pot to make sense of life, or that when we die (esp. by suicide) we are just considered leftovers. IDK maybe a stretch.
@mpolster242 жыл бұрын
The real name is Suicide. Cant play that on mainstream radio though. Hence the chop suey change.
@ValleCSS2 жыл бұрын
Can't say for sure I know the meaning behind the name of the song, but I think 'Suey' could be a little slang word for suicide, since they sing that word so many times throughout the song. No idea about 'chop' though. Maybe it's like chopping food, so by Chop Suey it means people are dropping like flies because they are killing themselves. I can't explain the title, but I also know that art is not supposed to be understood or explained. You just need to feel and appreciate it for what it is!
@jc2004x2 жыл бұрын
The song was originally called Suicide. The label made them change the name so they "chop"ped it down to Sui and eventually called it "chop suey".

Yo. Grettings from Australia. Love your content. Chop Suey, being an american Chinese stew made with meat or fish, plus bamboo sprouts, onions, rice and water chestnuts. They used it for the name of the song because it describes their musical style, with lots of stuff thrown together. The original name of the song was "Suicide," but their record lable made them change it to make it radio friendly. It makes sense a little bit though ... "Suey-cide". Get it?

It's named Chop Suey because the original name was Suicide, and producers said it was way to on the nose and offensive for the early 2000s to name a song that. So I believe the story goes, they were eating the Chinese meal "chop suey" and one of the producers said that was it, that's what the song will be named. That's why in the video there is a small clip of Serj just eating a mouthful of Chinese food with disdain on his face lol
