When William Bailey got on a Greyhound bus in small-town Indiana in the 80's, he set his sights on Los Angeles to become a rock star... his friend Jeff Isbell was a guitarist who had also left home months earlier to become a rocker in L.A. But when he arrived in Los Angeles, this small town fella was greeted by hustlers, dealers, pimps and hookers on the streets of the city... It took him a month living on the street to find his friend. Bailey and Isbell formed their first band together in the Hollywood scene called Hollywood Rose. Isbell took the name Izzy Stradlin... Bailey took the name W. Axl Rose. It was in that band when Axl met Slash (real name Saul Hudson)... he thought Axl was an incredible singer, and played in Hollywood Rose for a bit before they broke up in 1985. Axl & Izzy joined the band L.A. Guns (featuring guitarist Tracii Guns) and changed the name to Guns N' Roses... in 1986, Axl fired Tracii and brought Slash in on lead guitar. The band was drawing hundreds of fans to their club shows, but were a mess of drugs, booze and fighting... They were broke, jobless, homeless and living in drug dens and strippers' places to survive. Finally, Geffen Records offered them a record contract in '86... 'Welcome to the jungle' became the opening track of the album 'Appetite for destruction', which was about Axl's experience of first arriving in L.A. from Indiana... When the record was finished, industry insiders thought it was trash... and GNR were always on the verge of breaking up. Released in 1987, 'Appetite for destruction' did not sell significantly, until the 1st music video for 'Welcome to the jungle' debuted on MTV late in the year... even at an early hour, requests for that video poured into MTV... Guns went from opening for Motley Crue in '87 to opening a major tour for Aerosmith in 1988 and soon had a #1 album that year. But this was where their saga started - the opening salvo of 'Welcome to the jungle' that announced to the world the arrival of Guns N' Roses...
@mooknick2422 жыл бұрын
technically he wrote the song after showing up in New York City...watch the popular ritz, new york show Axl explains the whole thing....everyone seems to think he wrote it when he saw LA but thats isn't true. A black man in New York City saw he was out of place with his backpacks after Axl stepped off the bus just like in the video and said the infamous line " You Know Where You Are?" You in The Jungle Baby" all from New York City.

Slash's mother was African-American and his father was white English. He lived in the UK until age 5 and then moved to LA. Also. there's absolutely no reason why people of one racial or ethnic background shouldn't be inspired and want to be like someone from another racial or ethnic background. Indeed, that's healthy, as long as its not in the context of self-hatred of your own heritage.
