So, MJ wasn't inspired to write Thriller from this but Quincy Jones did use it as a template for 2 bass lines on the album. That's like saying MJ was inspired to write Thriller after hearing Man-eater bc Jones basically ripped off that bassline for Beat it.

John Deacon was inspired to write this base line by "Good Times" by the Disco group Chic who he hung out with in their studio. Freddie was a great fan of Disco but Roger and Brian weren't. It's true MJ encouraged them to release it as a single. Roger Taylor said it would never make it, but it became Queen's biggest hit!. Roger admitted that MJ was right!

OMG THANK YOU for saying that. I have been freaking thinking "good times" every time I hear the guitar riff on this - and no one came out and said that. I am not crazy! It's not to say Queen stole - but there's a little nod to that song in the riff - and I KNEW IT. I can stop letting that gnaw at me when I hear this song now. LOL.

*FUN FACT* - Despite what this Official Video shows, in the studio recording of this song, it was actually JOHN playing the funky strumming guitar parts on a Fender Telecaster guitar, as well as the bass parts on a Music Man Stingray bass. Brian’s only contribution to the recording was the “weird noises” in the middle section, using the unique properties of his Red Special guitar fed through an Eventide Harmonizer effect rack.

Hey Daniel!! You're right, this really was a great reaction. They were both full on cheese smiling. I agree Queen is fantastic Live but the two best concert versions, Wembley and Montreal, are faster than the original version. It's also very difficult to hear the lyrics in both because there are so many shots of Freddie from behind or from the side. Everyone has heard the hook, but to get the feel of the single & hear the lyrics I think this was the way to go for a first run. I don't know about you, but I can never get too much Queen. 🔥👑 I would definitely be up to watching a Live performance reaction of this iconic song at a later date! 🎵✌️

It is heavily influenced by Chic. I know a lot of people are convinced that the bass line is a remix from Good Times. Certainly was an influence as John Deacon the Queens bassist who wrote this was hanging out a lot with Chic doing this period. Another good song that was also on this album and is Bass heavy is Dragon Attack written by Brian May. On this song every band member is on fire with each instrument taking centre stage. If you do try that track out, listen to the album track version, then check out their live version, if you do it that order I promise you will not be disappointed - Bring on that funky music!!!!

Michael was definitely influenced by Freddie's vocal style and live performances, and the band's particular sound at the time, as expressed in their 1980 album The Game, from whence the single originates. The band were still very ambitious and creative at the time and were always pushing themselves and each other to continue to write music that was not only creative, but also distinctly different from their previous music. To produce the album, Queen worked with a younger German producer named Mack, who oversaw the band's first use of electronic synthesizers (whose absence until then was something the band had boasted about on the liner notes of each album). Anyways, as always there was internal tension in the band over some of the songs especially by Rodger who did not like Another One Bites the Dust because he considered it to be too much of a "dance" song, which he didn't care for. Michael Jackson's 1979 album off the wall was very popular but definitely a dance pop album. However his 1972 magnum opus, the Michael Jordan/ Wayne Gretzky= Tom Brady /album × 10, Thriller, the greatest selling album of all time, went beyond merely the dance pop genre, including rock , funk/rock, which Queen really leaned into for their next album 1982 Hot Space, which Michael has named as an influence for Thriller. Despite this prestige, the album was divisive among the Queen fan base (to this day), and was also one of the reasons why the band faded Into Obscurity in the American Music Scene, and only occasionally capturing public attention such as during Live Aid. Michael was a generational talent. He was influenced by many great performers, eg James Brown, Stevie Wonder etc and often found a way to incorporate some of their elements and give it his own creative twist. Interestingly, according to his formal executive assistant, P Freestone, one of the albums he recalls Freddie listening to a lot was an album by the producer of Thriller, Quincy Jones called The Dude, which came out at around the same time.

I love this one! I don't think you have checked out George Michael's live performance of Queen's "Somebody To Love" at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert yet. Everybody who was anybody was at this concert. Elton John, David Bowie, Annie Lennox, Def Leppard, Guns N Roses, etc. and George blew everybody away. 72,000 tickets sold out three hours after they went on sale. If you haven't reacted to this yet, why are you denying yourself the pleasure of hearing it? George was nervous to do the song because it was not only his favorite Queen song, it was Freddie's favorite Queen song. The concert was to raise money for AIDS research which was how Freddie died. George had just learned his partner, Anselmo Feleppa, had tested positive for the AIDS virus. Sadly he would die one year after this concert. George said he knew he had to two things with his performance, honor his friend and idol Freddie and pray for Anselmo. Seriously it is an amazing and inspired performance. Do yourself a favor and check it out!
