Definitely remember the nightmarish 2-3 shift in every VW I've ever driven seeing this one. Both are cool builds, but I'd probably take the van. It's just so unexpected that it definitely adds to the cool factor.

I am from a country where cars are driven from left side. This is the most natural position for a manual car, 1st 2nd and 3rd are near you and you change gears with your natural hand, right hand. I think this is a disadvantage for right handed people in UK. To change gears with left hand and from far away to near you, seems like a hell to me.

The Golf being that low on its suspension makes it look like an audio exhibition car with all cavities concreted-filled. Many years ago I saw a Golf GTI looking that slammed at a sound-off - apparently it weighed 3tons and had to be trailered to the event because it couldn't move under its own power. Quite loud, at least.
