Why is a diesel gearbox longer? I presumed as they rev to 5k it would be the opposite/shorter ... but what do it know 😂 I'm a barber not a mechanic 😂😂

​@the.famous.youtube-guy It's because they rev lower, so diesel ratios on an engine that revs to 7-8k RPM mean that the gearing is much longer. i.e. The Seat Leon 1.4 TSi manual box has a fourth gear with 18.8mph per 1000rpm and a max speed of 122mph at 6500rpm, the equivalent 1.6 TDI manual box has a fourth gear with 24.3mph per 1000rpm but a max speed of only 109mph at 4500rpm. If you put the diesel gearbox in the petrol car (assuming the final drive was the same), the max speed for fourth would then be 158mph because the ratio stays the same but there are more revs to play with. (109/4.5*6.5) Conversely, petrol gearbox ratios would be ridiculously short in a diesel because you'd only ever be able to access a much smaller rev range than the manafacturer intended for that gear. The petrol's gearbox in the diesel car from the example above would give the gear a top speed of only about 85mph. (18.8*4.5) It's part of the reason that stock diesels don't tend to be as fast as their petrol counterparts too, since longer ratios mean less wheel torque, so lots of the benefit of the extra torque offered by a turbo diesel engine is lost when comparing straight-up acceleration. The solution to that problem for towing and acceleration is usually more, shorter gears, which is why diesel lorries have 14 or more gears with really fast ratios and is also the reason that diesel cars with 8 or more gears tend to fare better against their petrol equivalents
