One of the most expensive guitars ever auctioned was Jimi Hendrix's from Woodstock and that sold for 2 million and then another guitar signed by Eric Clapton, Keith Richards , Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood, Brian May, David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, Tony Iommi, Angus Young, Malcolm Young, Sting, Paul McCartney, Liam Gallagher, Brian Adam's AND Mark Knopfler, among others sold for 2.7 million dollars.... Do you know who all of those people are?? All of them combined on a guitar felt just shy of 3 million dollars.... We all have a Romeo or Juliet in our past that we have loved and lost, and that we still miss, that we still regret letting go. This song is the story of that Romeo or Juliet, and, depending on your mood, can bring back memories of joyful times you spent with them, or sadness and regret that those times are gone. A bitter-sweet song that tells the story of all our Romeos or Juliets, bringing back their faces, their voices, how it felt to hold them, to love them. "All I do is miss you, and the way we used to be" often brings tears to my eyes. This is the perfect song - "a love song, the way it's meant to be."

In and around 1979 Mark and DS played in Cork City Hall, when it came to the playing of R&J the lights in the hall packed with over 1.000 people went out, a single light from the very back of the hall came on and hit the body of that very guitar and the silhouette of the guitar reverberated around the vast room, it was magical. The last live concert I attended pre covid was Mark Knopfler live in Dublin. The man is up there with the greatest of all time in my humble opinion.

I love this song in so many ways. The transition from the airy fingerpick pattern to the big chord strokes. The modern day references and slang laid across the Shakespeare classic. The gravel-laden inflection when he delivers the most powerful line, "I love you like the stars above, love you 'til I die." The vague sense of futility as he offers the olive branch - "it was just that the time was wrong." This is a 4 minute song that seems to describe multiple decades of life at the perfect level of detail. In a brilliant body of work, this one has always been the standout for me.

@@kubel83 I believe you are correct. Musicians appreciate greatness, no matter the package it may come in. An anecdote of this: I was reading an article some months back. Evidently Guns n Roses played Farm Aid back in 1990, which is pretty crazy considering the crowd and GnR was sort of the biggest band going in 1990. Interestingly, John Denver followed GnR with his set of some of his classic songs. Just him and his acoustic guitar. According to the article, the guys in GnR and a whole bunch of other acts were in the wings of the stage to watch John Denver perform because everyone was just in awe of him. Again, musicians appreciating musicianship. I went and found that performance and the story is not wrong. John Denver absolutely killed it.......and I say this as someone who will listen to Pantera and Peter, Paul, and Mary.

Totally agree... "We came up on different streets But both were streets of shame Both dirty and both mean And still the dream was the same I dreamed your dream for you so now your dream is real How can you look at me as if I'm just another one of your deals." He really captured people's often unconscious attraction to an equally damaged kindred spirit and their yearning to experience deep intimacy to repair earlier wounds. The man gave himself totally to this woman then felt shattered at being seemingly dismissed as if he meant little more than a quick fix to boost her mood or was on a par with a paying customer. Profound lines.
