Hollywood gotta take notes. This is how you do an adaptation. The scenes 1:1 from the game. The CASTING. I was honestly not sold on bella as ellie until i heard her opening few lines. It almost feels like she perfectly captured the way ashley johnson sounded as ellie right down to how she swears. I can't gush enough about this. Next episode is going to be shorter but I'm SO READY.

I loved the game and have watched a lot of people's playthroughs too, got teary eyed almost every single time. No different for the show, they did a great job on eps 1-2. My expectations were low going in, now they are very high lol

I love the fact they added in that they were out of pancake mix and they refused the biscuits, the infection was spread through flour and other such items, it got into the food supply at a factory, and that’s how it spread so fast, so those two decisions saved Joel’s/Tommy’s life

The changes they made, make so much sense in terms of the different medium. What works in a game might not work in tv or film and still they gave us the view through the window screen in the beginning. They really balanced this perfectly.

Thanks for the comment! Just to clarify, we didn't really mention anything about the video game adaptation curse - that's an extremely outdated and out of touch term that seems to still be flung around by lots of critics. There have been plenty of video game adaptations that were either commercially or critically very successful, yet there is still somehow this trope being pushed. We absolutely do not agree with that. That being said there are definitely a lot of crappy adaptations as well, but finally there seems to be a respect and love growing for games. If the directors and producers love and respect the source material there is no earthly reason why it shouldn't be successful! Hope that clarifies things!

This episode was my introduction to The Last of Us. After watching 2 episodes I bought the game and started playing up to where the show was. I let the show be my first exposure to the story, catching up in-game after each episode. After the show ended (and my play-trough) I couldn't wait till season 2 to see the rest of the story so I bought and played part 2. I am now a huge Last of Us fan and I can't wait for season 2! Part 2 is one of my favorite game of all time.

It was an incredible experience in which I once more relived all those emotions: laughter, tears, and stress. Just watched the first episode and I am spechless, the way them distinguished these zombies from "common flesh driven zombies" was incredible (scene of fungi coming out of old woman´s mouth, Im looking at ya!), the hell starting to get loose feeling was great, the radio in the end and the building was breath taking. I love the fact that because it’s the fungi behind the actions of the infected and why they do what they do. It pretty much explains why it doesn’t eat the victim (since they need the body) and all other changes that just make sense! Also tendrils instead of spores!? Hell yeah sign me in. We are so ready for this. We had goosebumps throughout the majority of this episode. After waiting so long we are happy to say it was definitely worth it! I played the game, and damn did this show deliver. Honestly, THAT SCENE might hurt even more in the show than it did in the game. I was dreading it the whole time leading up to it, and then bawled when it happened. I'm not sure what's more heartbreaking. The Last of Us, or Arcane, cause they both hurt so much.

I didn't play the game but I can confirm that the way they introduce us to the story and the main plot was on point. I didn't cry watching the dead of Sarah but when I watched some reactions and the scene a couple of times, I cried, maybe I was in shock. Anyway... I can't wait to see this story unfold and get to know Ellie and her relationship with Joel. If they deliver a relationship as strong as The Mandalorian with Grogu then I will consider it a success.

We absolutely adore the game, but when this show came out, we so desperately hoped that non-gamers would also watch this, just so everybody can see how special the world of The Last of Us is, as well as the relationship between Joel and Ellie - so this makes us so happy!! Honestly, the moment of Sarah's death is very shocking - especially if one doesn't know that that's what's going to happen, it's a very drastic thing that happens, as Sarah's introduced as a protagonist in this episode. I can imagine that that would leave someone in shock! So far, we can gladly say that they've managed to be faithful and respectful of the source material, so we are superhopeful that they will nail the bond between Ellie and Joel! I feel like Bella Ramsey is the new Ashley Johnson / Ellie. I mean that people will remember her as Ellie. She's so convincing! The scene near the end, in the rusty tunnels, where she never stops looking for Tess... that scene was so great in a directorial and performance way! ❤ Also, the look on Joel's face when Ellie stands up in the middle of the street while they are trying to be sneaky was great acting too. Someone mentioned that Ellie standing up was both for narrative purposes *and* as an inside joke for gamers. I like to think it's true. 😅

I've never played the game and I may have heard about it in passing, but this first episode was amazing. It's great story telling and even someone not familiar with it can be drawn in by the story and the characters. Feeling the connection to the characters through your reaction is so great. Even seeing the trailer for the season ahead and seeing the other actors that will come out in future episodes got me a little emotional. I think it was because as each one came on screen I could feel the familiarity of the character through your reactions. Thank you!

21:30 I cried at this point like a toddler, even though I saw the scene in the game and reactions x times and knew what was happening. I was very skeptical about Pedro and Bella as Joel and Ellie. But they do it incredibly well. It feels straight out of the game. Also the others ... Nico as Sarah, Gabriel as Tommy, Anna as Tess. All done great. Merle as Marlene anyway cause it's the same actress as in the game. My conclusion after this episode: I've never been so captivated by the start of a series based on a story I know inside and out. So damn close to the game plus more informations and filled gaps. Absolutely masterpiece!

I'm right there with you. I've played the entire game and I'm really happy with the choices they've made. They've given a context for people who haven't played the game and expanded the world and also kept us people who have played the game surprised. They've done a great job at keeping certain cutscenes frame by frame and included important lines. I think the casting is perfect and they've kept character traits and development on point. I've loved this so far and I can't wait to see what they do next with the rest of the story.

Rewatching the series with you guys, I see now the fact that Joel and Sarah were close to ingesting foods with flour multiple times in the first episode. Biscuits, cake and pancakes and cookies... dodged them all.

If you replay TLOU on the PS3, Joel's watch is not damaged during the confrontation with the military personnel. You can see it as he holds Sarah in his arms after she dies. The watch is not broken. In the PS4 remastered version, Joel's watch is broken.

I'm so glad you guys even checked out some of the extra content after the show. This episode is perfect! And the Sarah scene being pretty much 1 to 1 to the game is awesome. There's no other way to have that moment. But it almost beats the game because of the acting and the added context. Joel and Sarah got fleshed out a lot more before the outbreak, and when it happens, the helplessness in Joel's voice just makes it hurt 10 times worse. In a way I think it's very possible that scene almost beats the game scene. I was sobbing.

We honestly just needed more haha, and the episode was already 1hr and 20 minutes :D The way they've mirrored how Sarah's scene was done in the game (the camera movement, the despair, the grief..) was overwhelming in the best sense of the word! We owe Troy Baker so much for breaking our hearts in that moment, and they've done it all over again in this adaptation! I was lowkey balling haha, if you look at our video, you can see it took me a solid few minutes to pull myself out of it - that scene was utterly devastating!

An amazing depiction of the video game and I love how they're throwing in curve balls to surprise previous gamers, like showing the truck but not having it cause the crash or seeing Robert but not having the conflict with him. The show has immense reviews/ratings from a single episode, it's definitely going to be the hit of 2023 TV IMO

We agree! Absolutely love the fact that the players know what to expect but now know not to expect it exactly the same way. We both loved the small changes and addition of new information. After this first episode and the amount of people that watched it we hope this becomes HBO's next hit because the story deserves it!

It seems like the musical cues are heavily inspired by the game too. When the plane crashes, just as the debris hits the truck it sounds like the death sound from the game. And when that fedra soldier noticed Joel Tess and Ellie it sounds like the game version of getting spotted. Thank God they got the original composer. I like the little music Easter eggs

Yeah! Haha they’re just going on the wildest trip of their lives. In the game there’s a bit more background that makes this absolutely horrifying and it’s the fact that the human part of the runners for example is still there. Those infected are crying while eating other people because the person can no longer control what they are doing and are now nothing but a passenger. That is truly horrifying!

A bit late, but I wanted to mention the scene with Nana, as described by the official podcast. She's depicted as being practically catatonic, unable to really hear or move on her own. The fungus, essentially, heals her, fixes her, while erasing everything that made her who she was. It's horrifying.

Something I noticed in this show is that all the scenes and shots in the show are “mirrored” if you get what I mean. If you watch a side by side of the games, a lot of things are just switched to the other side. Like the barn burns on the right side of the road in the game but on the left side of the road in the show (that’s just one example).

Right?! I see this as its own thing. Sure, it's an adaptation of the game, but it doesn't have to be identical. All the actors are perfect. I know I shouldn't dwell on hateful comments... because they *are* indeed hateful; Why else would anyone criticize someone's gender, colour, and even *subjective* beauty. Sarah didn't want any part of the raisin cookies Mrs. Adler made, and Joel forgot to purchase a birthday cake for them to eat later that day. Oh, Tommy didn't eat whatever it was that was in the Tupperware that he pulled out of the fridge either. We don't see what was in it, but he put it back after sniffing it--had it already gone bad? The food in the Tupperware aside, what's a common ingredient in the foods mentioned? Yeast or fungus! 10:33 This was a nice change. I don't recall explaining why Joel wasn't present when Sarah woke up--I haven't played the game since 2013, so maybe I forgot something, but this change clears that up for me. 10:39 I think both Tommy and Joel sound like they do in the game! Everyone is killing it in this series. EVERYONE! Even Mercy! Can dogs win awards? 32:40 I love that they got Merle Dandridge to reprise her role as Marlene for this. Yeah, I'm not mad at the changes at all. I love what they've done, and I think it'll be very hard for the rest of the series not to be as strong as this start. Everyone is all in, we can see that in this first epic opener. What a start! Just a few more hours until episode two! Can't wait!

I like a lot of the changes they did with the show, in my opinion it made even better the games and expanded in a lot of stuff. For example, the spores are not in this and they went with the original concept art before the spores called “the tendrils”. Realistically all the spores would be in the air so everyone would be dead, not just in some zones and anyway when they get out of the zones with the spores when they have their mask on in the games they would still have spores in the hair and clothes, it would be impossible so I love it this way more because it’s more realistic and TLOU is very grounded and realistic, so it makes more sense like this and also the tendrils makes the infected EVEN MORE creepy and show how all of them are connected so I love it. And how the infection works. In the game it takes like two days to turn, in here like they showed in the scene with the little boy in the sign if you get bitten in the leg being the farthest part to the brain it takes a lot of hours or a day so it makes more sense, then torso, shoulders and hands, it takes some hours and then head it takes minutes and that makes it even more scarier, I love it. Like even smaller change like the guy that shot Sarah saying “I’m sorry” is an improvement. It’s shows he is just following orders and didn’t wanted to do it. Amazing. I love all the new scenes we got, everyone in the cast is perfect, and the scene after Joel, Ellie and Tess gets caught I love how Joel had PTSD, it made the scene more emotional and I liked it better in the show. Amazing pilot episode! 10/10 I love it.

You can tell how much love and respect was poured into this show, because the game itself is so beloved and so cinematic - it was such an incredible experience to see them make these changes and still capture the essence of the game. This is the best piece of proof we could ever need when it comes to game adaptations, that all it takes is care and respect, instead of trying to make it fit a mold or worse, turn it into a cash grab. I have massive game bias have to say cause tlou is special to me.. but i was also very aware of how the show would adapt etc and was open to it and tbh... I think the show did something incredible... it's utterly beautiful.... Harrowing af but stunning... These shows happen once in a lifetime.. I'm glad i was alive for this .. i really am.
