I love how they throw the ethical dilemma at us in the end. The fireflies were wrong to not let her choose. So in that sense Joel saving her by any means is justified, but by lying to her he's also not letting Ellie make the choice. I actually thought about this a lot. I think Joel saving Ellie is both heroic and selfish (not wanting to lose her) but then again the same goes with lying (thinking he is protecting her but at the same time afraid to lose her). It's an amazing story so far.

Marlene could not risk giving Ellie the choice and having her back out. Joel could not risk giving Ellie the choice and having her accept. It’s a tragic and complicated predicament.
@gorylek1985 ай бұрын
There is really no dilemma. They tried to use a child. You can only argue about "greater good" but that's it. She is a child. We don't let them vote or drink - we should not let them decide if they should die for our sake. Fireflies did not let her chose. They wanted to use and discard her. Joel was only one thinking about her. Him killing everyone is also justified. When you do rescue plan like that alone - you can't leave anyone behind who can find a gun and follow you. You just can't. You remove everyone in the path. Some people argue that he should kill nurses but they did not really matter because there were people in the city where they started that knew him and Ellie and knew about the job. It was not really a secret among Fireflies. So really what he did there at that point was the only viable path that considered well being of a child.

Joel not leaving any capable people as survivors isn't no mercy, it's as he told Marlene, they'd keep coming for her. He can't leave any witnesses who know what she or he looks like, or the fact they got there. His mistake is not killing the nurses. Even if they told Ellie she would die and gave her that choice, she's a child, a child who lived 99% of her life in FEDRA school, not even leaving the QZ, she never actually got to live. She's not a full grown adult with life experience capable of making that kind of decision. She doesn't have full competency to agree to her own sacrifice for the greater good. It's a no-win situation.
@OfficialMediaKnights Жыл бұрын
The nurses surviving was also something we both thought about…when it comes to Ellie’s choice even though she is still technically a child. She has had to go through some tough life experiences that many adults today will never even get close to experiencing. Of course she never had a normal life but who does in this apocalyptic world. Ellie is a smart young lady. She deserved to at least know what the options were. There’s a lot of back and forth about this particular topic and we find both perspectives fascinating. Let’s say she could’ve sacrificed herself for the cure, we don’t know how exactly they would’ve used it. Would they monopolize the vaccine? Would everybody get it? Would there be enough resources to even provide everyone with a vaccine or only the lucky few? Or is it better to remove that option entirely like Joel did? Tough decisions all around. Like you said it’s a no win situation.
@bridgethaines7127 Жыл бұрын
@@OfficialMediaKnights Would it have even worked. "He believes he can make a cure" is a big leap. Clearly none have been successful in the last 20 years. Also, if it didn't work, but came close, would the Fireflies then have tried to replicate the circumstances of Ellie's immunity? By capturing pregnant women and infecting them after birth, before the cord is cut?

@@OfficialMediaKnights no matter what she has gone thru does not mean a minor is able to comprehend that decision. In fact it makes her even less capable. She just went thru a year of trauma, and is depressed from almost being raped and eaten just a few weeks prior. She has a ton of survivors guilt, and has been given a slight messiah complex (stated by the writers / directors) because people have been telling her she is the sole hope for a new world. That is more than enough to heavily skew her current mind state. Regardless of that her brain will not be done developing until she is 24/25. Before then, it is not even something she should have to think about.

I watched a playthrough of the first game and I know what they took out. But honestly, I'm not as bothered by it as others. I realize that it was probably a budget issue and they just couldn't afford to recreate all the crazy awesome scenes from the game. I just really appreciate what they were able to give us with limited time and money. We traded some action for more backstory and extra character moments. Never in the game did Joel tell Ellie "You healed me" or anything to that effect, but we got that in the show. I just love stuff like that. I give the show 9.5/10.

Thing is - nobody want to watch 1 hour of Joel sneaking through another location. So it was justified to skip most of it. Some thing like that gay romance in the beginning were not fleshed out in game because there was no time for it. Camera was glued to Joel so you could not develop the story like you can do in a show. So that where this massive change came from. They could finally present something they could not in the game. The important parts are there and that's what counts.

@@OfficialMediaKnights I remember that the show was initially made into 10 episode, then they cut it down to 9. I wonder if ep 9 was initially longer. My disappointment about episode 9 is about the shootout scene...I think they should've added a short scene of Joel hiding and struggling behind wall being flanked it would add a sense of stake on what he's trying to do that his life could be in danger just trying to save Ellie...but instead we got a scene where Joel is basically a pro grounded player who has achieved platinum and do quick playthrough regularly. I'm also a bit disappointed that they cut the scene where Joel was chased while he's holding Ellie...that is a crucial scene. Everything else I can make sense about. Yes, there is no infected and tunnel scene, no drowning scene, and I expected them to have that in this episode. But it's reasonable to cut them out, because first, it's basically Fireflies' base, and apparently they have patrol...so I would think the city is relatively safe because they wouldn't set up a base in a city swarmed with infected. The could also already cleaned up the city. And the drowning scene, I mean, if I were them, I wouldn't even risk it to go through tunnels where infected usually dwell. I would take safe passages through the surface, even if I have to make a long detour (hinted at ep 2). I can rationalize it. But oh well, I'm pretty happy because the show actually made me much more emotional than the game with added scenes. Yeh...still bummed with the shootout cuts.

I love how some people refuse to acknowledge that Marlene and Joel both took away Ellie's choice. The audience is more attached to Joel because they know him better and so a lot of people see him as the hero but Joel and Marlene were both in the "wrong" if we have to make moral judgments which I think seems silly in a story that is all about the shades of gray. I love Marlene and Joel both as characters and can empathize with them both.

Agree. The Last of Us is a story that has no hero's or villains. Everyone is just doing what they think is best for them to survive. The only real villains in this world are people like the hunters and rattlers (those who have played both games will know what I mean)
@kiwigirljacks Жыл бұрын
True but we have to remember that Marlene took Ellie’s choice away first so it was redundant of her to say “what would she want to do” because she never even asked her and it was too late to. Of course she didn’t because she couldn’t risk Ellie saying no, and then being an even worse person but forcing her to do it as she and the Fireflies would have because they are as militant about their cause as Joel is. So… Joel had only two options at that point and none of those options were to ask Ellie what she wanted because the procedure was already under way. His only options were let her die or kill everyone to get her back (and maybe give her that choice later). And also let’s not forget Ellie is a traumatised child and really isn’t equipped to even make that choice. The only option I see would be to protect Ellie until she’s old enough to make a fully informed decision. So while both Marlene and Joel are not good people,I personally still fall on Joel’s side. He just shouldn’t have lied about it Ellie afterward.
@lcfcsr Жыл бұрын
I don't get why people believe Ellie should have a choice! The choice is either her life or the entire world, in those circumstances how can you contemplate dooming the entire world just because 1 girl doesn't want to die, what about all the other children that will die because they haven't found a cure? For me Marlene did the right thing by making that decision and not allowing Ellie to die in fear

@@lcfcsr because it was not Ellie's fault that the world as it was ended. Why would she just accept the responsability to die for something that they HOPE that works. Most likely Ellie would agreed but they took away her choice and her right to say goodbye to Joel, to make things the right way. Marlene just needed to justify those 20 years of killing, the innocents killed, the years of failures and the deaths of her people, all her guilt into this 14 year old girl. Even when the world ended Ellie was just a political matter, The fireflies needed this "win" to "liberate" the QZ from fedra. Kinda sad.

They gave the showrunners the some money and the freedom, but not the final decision on next seasons, so they had to make it work in 10 episodes and not left untold stories for some season that might not happen. Maybe my memory isn't so great but I don't remember there being much father/daughter bonding time in the game either. If I remember correctly right after the whole David portion of the game there is another time jump to when they arrive in Salt Lake City and by then Ellie is pretty checked out. I do agree this episode felt a little rushed though. Even some of the dialogue felt like it was at a quicker tempo and didn't have the same room to breathe like it did in the game. I get it though, there are run-time constraints in television where there are none in a video game.

It wasn't much in the game, but there was some, still! Especially in reference to the Tunnel sequence, where we saw them fight together, as a more cohesive unit than we'd seen before and we did feel like cutting straight to the hospital after capture was what left things feeling a little rushed. That could have been handled in less than 10 minutes, still giving the show a shorter runtime, but again that's what brings us back to the budget issue. We still got a great show, it was just the ending that could have used more time...

So just FYI, the whole "chemical messengers" thing needing to be obtained from Ellies brain is nonsense. Those "chemical messengers" are the human immune system and that exists in our circulatory system - aka our blood and lymph nodes and spleen of the lymphatic system. It would have to be some kind of naturally acquired innate immunity in Ellie from her mom, and is difficult to say that it would have been enough time for Ellies mom to develop some kind of "chemical messengers" that would produce antibodies, likely Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies, that would pass from mother to fetus. if this were possible, Ellie would likely be producing antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) which would trigger her adaptive immune response - involving cytokines awaking T cells and B cells to mount an attack. In any case, all that is needed from Ellie are some blood samples and maybe possibly apheresis - bone marrow collection - for the purposes of obtaining the stem cells producing the B cells that recognize the cordyceps and mounts an adaptive immune response. What I think might be more likely is that Ellies mother had some sort of immune resistance to cordyceps, examples of this sort of thing are people who have resistance to HIV and other infections. Probably something that we don't yet understand about eosinophil response (yes, I'm saying this is the context of in universe, but there is still a lot for us to learn about eosinophils). If this were to be the case, it probably would have been even more helpful to breast feed Ellie in that moment because babies do not develop an adaptive immune system until around 2 months of age. It's also possible that a cordyceps infection could not occur through breast feeding because we already know that this infection was spread through the wheat supply. So I am thinking that this organism is not a lactose fermenter and therefore would not survive in breast milk. And if it were to pass into the breast milk into baby Ellie, the very acidic environment of her stomach (pH2) would very likely kill the cordyceps and pass from her body with no incident. Given all this, it might have been that Ellies mother would never have turned and Ellie could have grown up with a mom.

Hey! I found your guys channel through 1899 and have thoroughly enjoyed watching your reactions mainly bc you guys are genuine and articulate your thoughts really well. Also I’m a lurker so this is my first comment so here goes. I agree with you that we needed more Joel and Ellie moments and there were several instances where the show felt rushed. However I still love it bc it’s been such a wonderful adaptation of one of the best video games ever! And also we def needed more infected and infected sequences but I’m hoping the success of this season gets them a bigger budget and with the creators confirming that part 2 will stretch across multiple seasons, here’s hoping that they can cover all the main beats while expanding on some of the backstories. This is turning into an essay (Sorry!) but one last thing I wanna say is that there was a bit i saw on twitter (I think it might have been a part of this week’s podcast) about Ashley Johnson saying what she felt was the meaning behind the final "Okay" that Ellie said, and she says how Ellie knows that Joel’s lying and the "okay" is not her believing or accepting the lie but a okay we’re done and our relationship isn’t going to be the same and it’s just even more heartbreaking. Anyways I was just paraphrasing, you should def give the podcast a listen (if you’re not already). Ok phew my essay is over, and again I love your channel and I’m so glad I found it!!

Anna told Marlene she was bit after she cut the cord, which was a lie because we all saw what happened. She didnt want Ellie killed. Played the game! I love that were having a whole debate about Joels decision again! I'm still obviously on Joels side, but he definitely isnt a hero, nor am I saying hes done the right thing. He made the most human choice, if saving the world means losing his (again), I get it. I also love the additional backstory of how Joel got his scar, the whole "it wasn't time that healed it" conversation made me symphatise with Joel more. If Ellie dies, Joel would lose it and would probably end it. I have no sympathy for marlene, her saying she was the only person who understand the pain is BS. She made a promise to her mother yes, but she was never around ellie, she didnt make a connection with ellie, she has "no idea what loss is" relative to a parent and child relationship. I do agree though, I wish the drowning scene was there too, Joel desperately trying to save ellie from drowning and the added tension of when the fireflies showed up wouldve made it more emotional. I also wished Joel called Ellie "baby girl" again when he picked her up off the surgery bed. But overall I still absolutely love the show! I do also wish we had more time seeing their father-daughter relationship, but the show captured the game perfectly. Ps. Also love that they added the giraffe scene!!! Haha

You're defiantly right about them cutting too much out...I wanted to see them go through the tunnel scene with the water and the bus and Joel helping Ellie across the water on a pallet in certain areas cause she can't swim....that and the 3rd episode missing out with Bill and Ellie interaction and not a lot of the infected is very disappointing...it was a great season but everyone that played the 2nd game and all the controversy, I really think people are going to turn on this show in the 2nd season and ratings are going to hurt...I heard that they are going to do 2 parts for the 2nd season and have to do part 1 in S2 and part 2 in S3...

Thanks guys for making me watch this show. I was like "zombie apocalypse? Meh..." But the show really has its own personality and so many unforgettable characters. I personally didn't miss the infected. The action scenes unfortunately tend to bore me. But I agree with you: we haven't had enough of Ellie and Joel. I had the feeling that they were almost attached to each other all of a sudden. You can see the evolution in the relationship, but when Joel ends up telling Ellie that it wasn't time that saved him, it's actually rushed. For me there was nothing to throw away. I really liked the flashback with Riley. It was super fun and 80's and so important to building Ellie's character. But I also wanted to see Riley transform and Ellie kill her. It's an ellipse, it's a shame, and it's precisely the flaw in the show you're pointing out: events are missing, even for someone who hasn't played the game, and even for someone who don't particularly look for action scenes and monsters. It is perhaps precisely these scenes from the game whose absence you regret that would have made the evolution of the relationship between Joel and Ellie less fragmentary. Despite this flaw, the series is excellent, really special, and I really appreciated the inclusion of in-game voice acting and all of the enthusiastic player feedback on how the story was sometimes changed, sometimes expanded, sometimes the same. It extends this universe that I really appreciate. I particularly liked Ashley Johnson. She's so beautiful, charismatic, she looks like Bella Ramsey (right? the nose, the cheeks...) and she's her voice in the game. Ellie's mother here: it's perfect! Anyway, your final analysis was so interesting, as usual. Love you guys .❤❤❤

@@OfficialMediaKnights Let me translate this remark from a French KZbinr I adore: "What was effective in the game was precisely this scene that we have in the series too, when Joel boosts Ellie. In the game it works well because when we press the button to ask Ellie for help, she does not answer and we have to go see her. In the series, since we never had this scene of scale boost that we get all the time in games, it has a lot less impact because you don't expect Ellie not to react. It's less effective than in games because it is one of the little things where the interactivity of the game and the narration work well together and that's also why season 2 will be very difficult to do, I'll talk about it in a next video." I will not watch this next video to avoid spoilers. Having not played the game, I can't quite understand why Season 2 will be harder to do than Season 1 and what this KZbinr is saying. But I'm a big fan of his analysis and I always, always agree with what he says and I share his preferences and tastes and he's so relevant. Maybe you've heard this remark before somewhere, or maybe you've made it yourself (sorry I only have a B2 level in English, sometimes I miss a word or two and the meaning of a sentence), or maybe you found it interesting. A real moral roller coaster. Marlene was able to sacrifice the life of someone who was in some way close to her. Joel sacrificed humanity for selfish reasons. He couldn't imagine experiencing the loss of his own daughter again. Nothing else mattered to him. Throughout this story told, what is also interesting is the fact that everyone glorifies the murders that Joel commits while protecting Ellie and also everyone condemns others who try to kill Joel and Ellie. The truth is that Joel protects his group, just as Tommy and Maria protect theirs, even David and Kathleen protect their groups... Each of these groups does exactly what Joel does for Ellie. He protects his own people. At this point I come to one very disturbing conclusion. If such or a similar pandemic ever happens, the biggest enemy will not be a virus, a zombie or something like that. The biggest enemy will be the other person. Every group and every person, because their goal will be only to save their own people. Marlene was the only one willing to sacrifice Ellie, whom she raised as a daughter, for the good of humanity. I enjoyed spending this time here watching and experiencing this wonderful show with you.

Sorry for the long comment but my heads been thinkin lol…….. I’ve heard that season 2 will have some big changes from the game. While I would love for them to change ONE thing about game 2 I will not give into hope and trust Neil Druckman with what’s left of my feelings. I refuse to fuel him with any more of my tears 😂. But regarding the show, the issues it raises are so complex. But I am ultimately more team Joel and this is why: -if Marlene knew that Ellie would consent then why not just tell her what was going on? Yeah she said it was to keep her from being scared but I honestly don’t feel that was 100% the case. If they had just told Ellie, she would have chosen to do it and then she could have probably convinced Joel to let it happen, and they could have at least said goodbye to each other. Now if they did that and Joel still rampaged then I might not be completely on his side regarding that. -He was so brutal because as he said if he let the dr or Marlene live, eventually they would have come for Ellie. And the rest were firefly guards that were trying to prevent him from getting to Ellie. The one guy did put down his weapon but in this world you can’t really trust anybody, he could’ve had a hidden sidearm or something. And Joel did at least let the nurses live 🤷🏻♂️. -Then there’s the fact that Ellie might have died for nothing. The cure was still only hypothetical. They believed it was possible but there was still no guarantee that it would work, or that it could be mass produced for the world. They should have taken more time to test and plan things around this one and only immune individual that exists. So I feel that the risk vs probability of success wasn’t good enough. -And also….the fireflies……I have no doubt that if a cure was made, the fireflies would have used it to gain power. I can’t see them just generously handing out the cure to everyone, especially not fedra controlled cities, so those civilians there would still have suffered. So overall, I understand more what Joel did and lean more towards team Joel. Now, he shouldn’t have lied to Ellie. I know he was afraid that if she knew it might damage their relationship and she might try finding some fireflies again to try the cure, but lying won’t help their relationship either. you can tell Ellie could kinda already tell Joel isn’t telling her the truth about it. It’s got so many complexities to it. There’s right & wrong on both sides. However, I’m more #TeamJoel, but let’s be real………Forget the show, I’m 100% #TeamPapaPedro! 😂😂😂 But also………..GIRAFFES!!!!!🦒🦒🦒🦒🦒

Duude! We agree with all of your points! The fireflies using the vaccine for their own benefit, Ellie having a choice, Joel getting to say goodbye if it came down to it. ALL OF IT! #TeamJoel #TeamPapaPedro

Yeah I think if HBO gave the creators a bigger budget this season could have been better & longer, at least 11 or 12 episodes. Think episode 5 burned through a huge part of the budget. Hell the bloater costume was half a million by itself. If season 2 & 3 are going to be any good HBO needs to give them over twice the budget of season 1

Absolutely agreed - the level of investment they've had to make to give us this amazing show is truly remarkable. Considering how well this show was received, and how intricate the story for Part 2 is, it's quite likely for them to increase the budget and the runtime! So fingers crossed!

I have never played the game, and although I am really loving the show I also feel like it's being rushed and missing something. Wildly disappointed in the lack of infected.

I'm sorry to hear that. It definitely did feel rushed, and if we could only convey how many iconic moments with the infected were cut out... Ugh. It's sad. But like you, we still love the show for sure. This was our only criticism really, everything else was handled beautifully and masterfully!

The pacing of the show is the reason that it was a 9/10 instead of a 10/10 for me. Cutting out the majority of the combat sequences was a mistake, especially with the infected, because Joel and Ellie bonded from surviving those encounters and slowly developing a father/daughter relationship along the their journey. If the show was just a bit longer, they could've fleshed things out more, which would've made this season perfect. The Last of Us is one of the most expensive shows ever made with a budget upwards of $100 million dollars, more than each of the first 5 seasons of Game of Thrones, and they originally had 10 episodes planned, so I definitely think that they had budget constraints and that could be why so much was cut.

Precisely!! It was definitely a pretty big undertaking, but a show like this definitely requires more of a budget, more episodes and longer runtimes in order to not sacrifice too much. Hopefully with the next season, they split the story into two, with access to a higher budget!
