Welcome to our first time watching as we react to Twisters (2024).
In Twisters (2024), a new generation of storm chasers Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), Kate Carter (Daisy Edgar-Jones),Javi (Anthony Ramos) and Scott (David Corenswet) confronts the fury of nature like never before. Set decades after the events of the original 1996 classic "Twister," the story follows a diverse group of meteorologists, thrill-seekers, and scientists who are drawn together by the common goal of studying and surviving the world's most dangerous tornadoes.
As they embark on a harrowing chase across the American Midwest, they encounter storms of unprecedented scale and power, pushing their skills, technology, and teamwork to the limit.
Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, "Twisters" brings back the high-octane action of chasing deadly tornadoes with cutting-edge visual effects and a new cast of storm chasers who will stop at nothing to study and survive these devastating natural phenomena.
We hope that you enjoy our reactions, commentary and review as we discuss the intense action sequences, gripping suspense, and jaw-dropping CGI that make "Twisters" such a wild ride and a highly entertaining film.

Such A Cool Fun Fact: The only person from OG Twister to appear in this movie is the lady sitting next to Glen Powell at the rodeo. That lady played Jo’s mom. She showed up to just be an extra in the rodeo scene. When someone from the crew found out, they told Glen Powell and he pulled her out of the crowd so she could sit next to him for that scene. As an Okie I was both excited and skeptical at the notion of another movie. I saw it with my wife at the Winchester (IYKYK) last weekend and I was beyond impressed with it. I can say we Okies have a much better understanding of tornadoes than they let on, even just everyday farmers and blue collar folks know the basics about them. Our warning systems are far more advanced than they depict as well, though it is true that there is still a ton we don't know about tornadoes. A lot of the science is flawed for movie purposes, but that didn't bug me. It made for some cool visuals and effects. Plus, the original Twister did the same thing just to a lesser degree. I love that the movie isn't an actual sequel. They don't acknowledge the events of the first movie or mention any of the characters, they just have small Easter eggs like Dorothy, Kate wearing the same outfit as Joe (cargo pants, tank top, jacket around waist) for part of the movie, etc. It's more like someone just said "Here's what I'd have done if I wrote Twister", and it came out amazing. Overall this Okie loved the movie and could easily overlook any science issues because the story and action were really good. Not that my opinion actually matters, but it gets a thumbs up from me. 👍

As someone who spent my childhood in Kansas this movie hit home because our town had storm that could cause as much damage as a tornado, though thankfully had one directly hit us. So I loved that as exciting as it is to chase storms they still showed how bad the aftermath is for people who lose their homes and even their lives. And for people who never lived in tornado alley, no it’s not something they made up for the movie, it’s 100% true that you can learn to smell and even feel when storms are coming because of how much the air changes.

Fun fact: when talking about his first tornado he's seen as a child, Glen actually incorporated his real childhood story. I can’t speak for all the scenes used but they filmed some cleanup scenes in the town I live in. Literally 20 feet from my house. They built like 3-5 houses. Just the shell of a house essentially. As a tornado enthusiast, I LOVED this movie partially because of all the real-life references. My personal favorites were: - the EF5 at the beginning acting pretty much exactly as the 2011 Joplin EF5 did, rain-wrapped mile-wide funnel and all - the overpass referencing the Moore-Bridge Creek EF5, the reason we know overpasses are glorified wind tunnels (not-so-fun fact: the shadows of people who attempted to hide under a particular overpass can still be seen to this day) - and last but not least, the final EF5 which struck the town of El Reno (which in real life was nearly subject to devastation like that. 2013 saw a **2.6-mile-wide** tornado track south of the town and barely miss it. It was officially rated an EF3, but likely would have been rated EF5 had it hit El Reno proper as the one in the movie did.) I highly recommend researching all three of these, as well as the lesser-known El Reno-Piedmont of 2011 and the infamous Tri-State Tornado (which took exactly as long a path as its name implies). All very interesting reads.

@reaIixx

Every reference to real life events that I could find 1. Sheltering under the overpass with a few of them dying is reference to the May 3rd 1999 Moore Oklahoma F5 (strongest ever) when 4 people did the same thing and didn't survive because of it. 2. The tornado Tyler says he saw for the first time with his aunt was actually the 1997 Jarrell Texas F5 (that thing was a horror story), which Glen Powell actually saw in real life. 3. In the credits it shows a picture of the map of the path of the 1947 Woodward Oklahoma F5 4. Taking shelter in a theater at the end of the movie is a reference to the 2013 Moore Oklahoma (same city, don't go there) EF5 that scraped the Warren Theater with people inside. The same theater actually showed Twisters and Reed Timmer himself saw it there 5. The entire character of Tyler Owen's with the KZbin channel and tornado intercepting is loosely based off of Reed Timmer and the Dominator 3 (tornado intercept vehicle). 6. The town at the end of the movie that almost gets hit is El Reno Oklahoma. In 2013, what's called the El Reno tornado (never actually hit town) became the widest on record at 2.6 miles wide, and 300mph+ winds. It killed 4 storm chasers, the first ever deaths in storm chasing. Including El Reno was a callback to that 7. The whole insurance taking advantage of people thing could actually refer to (in addition to buying their land for cheap like in the movie) the theory that insurance is the reason no tornado has been rated EF5 since 2013, because it means the companies don't have to pay as much. (There have been EF5 tornadoes since then, they were just rated EF4). 8. One of the first pictures shown in the credits used to be considered the first ever tornado photo, however it actually ended up being fake. 9. Because this likely takes place around 2013, with the final tornado probably being a sort of alternate version of the real El Reno tornado, it can be assumed that the comment about tornadoes becoming more and more frequent probably refers to the April 27th, 2011 Super Outbreak which had 200 in one day. Which was actually mostly in Alabama. 10. A deadly rainwrapped EF5 that wasn't really expected is likely a reference to the 2011 Joplin EF5, which I'm sure most have heard of. 11. From the opening scene, the shot out the back of the truck as they speed away is extremely similar to real footage from the 2023 Matador Texas EF3 (it was EF5 strength) with a slightly obscured tornado appearing to almost chase the vehicle directly behind with power flashes and everything 12. Although it occurred after they were (probably) done making the shot, the scene with the wind turbines snapping off and collapsing is very similar to the recent (2024) Greenfield Iowa EF4 (it had winds near 300mph, it was easy EF5), where Reed Timmer captured footage of wind turbines being shredded. The final movie cut of that scene looks slightly different from the trailer, meaning they probably modified it after that footage happened. 13. This may be a bit of a stretch but there is a line about a completely unwarned tornado hitting a small town. This could potentially be a reference to the 1990 Plainfield F5, which was completely unwarned and there aren't even any pictures of it happening. This may be even more of a stretch, but it could also refer to the "North Platte incident" from a few months ago when (a very low risk day but still) the most classic looking supercell ever was obviously on the ground, with a massive debris ball on radar and estimated velocities several hundred feet up at almost 200mph, and yet the NWS of North Platte just ignored it, not issuing even a regular warning until 15 minutes after it was obviously strong and just barely missed a town. It was strong enough to warrant a tornado emergency or at least PDS but they said nah and could've killed people. 14. Tyler using the money he earns to give out free stuff in the immediate aftermath is probably also a reference to people like Ryan Hall (does live outbreak coverage) who raise money during those streams and donate thousands to those people

Tornado fact... In 2013 El Reno was hit by a tornado that was 2.6 miles wide, and had wind speeds of 313 mph. Mike Bettes from the Weather Channel was with his team out there, and his vehicle got thrown and rolled. The camera they were filming with was flung from the vehicle and recorded the suv rolling. This tornado also killed storm chasers Tim and Paul Samaras, and Chris Young.

And now I'm a huge fan of Twisters as well. This was an amazing movie when seen in a theater, on the big screen. This movie, the Dolby sound system, over priced buttered popcorn and soft drink, and Kate's her-oism during the climatic scene, charging into the tornado as a whole theater of Twister fans cheered her on, made $30 well spent fun.

I just rewatched your reaction after watching the movie again, and something you said near the end made me realize something. You joked about a tornado starting to form in the background at the airport..... and it struck me that both Jo in Twister and Kate in Twisters are actually quite jinxed. Wherever they go tornados follow; thus it's probably best to stay away from them if you're looking to survive tornados. I'd be like, "where are you going?" and then go the opposite direction...... and live nowhere near either of them. LOL

Man, you guys posting this video…the storms happening here in Nebraska…makin’ me regret not following through with my storm chaser dreams. (Last week we had a storm pass through here in Omaha that knocked out power for a week-trees down, out buildings down…117mph winds in my area). Almost went to University of Oklahoma to get the fun started. Y’know they’ve got a vehicle called the TIV-tornado interceptor vehicle-that they’ll roll straight into the path and it will lower down, drill into the ground and anchor there while the tornado passes over to get readings. That would be a wild time!

Going into the theater I wasn't sure what to fully expect from this movie. It's difficult to recapture what the original cast had..... I think this movie does a better job of making you really feel for the people who have been killed and the people who have survived tornados. I appreciated that additional focus of this film. I also like how they subverted the audiences expectations in having Kate slowly reach the realization that she was the one working on the "wrong" team..... but then having Javi also succumb to his conscience and do the right thing by the end of the movie, as well. It was nice seeing the character growth throughout the course of the movie which allowed me to fully enjoy the movie without having to compare it with the original movie as I was watching it. I watched it again this morning, and had to take several breaks throughout..... at the theater you really can't stop to reflect on what you're seeing, but at home, some of it hits a bit harder because you can pause it to "catch your breath" so-to-speak. Thus, it was fresh in my mind while watching your reaction, and I really did like your reaction to the movie.

1) Gotta give more love to Anthony Ramos. He had a complicated character and a thankless role to play as the “platonic friend” (there were vibes, at least on his end, at least until the movie decided that Glen Powell is the love interest) & villain red herring. 2) It’s crazy how the tornadoes in the sequel were so much bigger and more destructive than they were 30 years ago. It’s almost like the climate has changed during that time…

Saw this at the theaters last month with my parents and LOVED IT!! So worth the 28 years wait for it since the first movie. And now I’m starting to become a Glen Powell fan because of this film😅. The only thing I have a question about is even if their idea to collapse a tornado is possible, wouldn’t that cause a chain reaction for an even bigger natural disaster to occur? I mean all of that energy has to go somewhere 🤔 And you are SOOO RIGHT, Universal NEEDS to bring back the ride!!!

I'm just starting this reaction, but I wanted to copy/paste my comment from another reaction regarding the possibility of this movie. So here's that with a short answer and a longer answer: "Is that possible? Can you stop a tornado like that?" Short answer: Not in reality, but in theory. Longer answer: They referred to using silver iodide to create precipitation. This is called "cloud seeding." Silver iodide is one of many chemicals that have been used, the most accessible of which would be table salt. When one of these chemicals is "seeded" into a cloud, it acts as the "ice nucleating particle," or the nucleus that attracts condensation and forms an ice crystal. These ice crystals then melt into rain as they fall to the earth. To recap: the silver iodide draws the moisture out of the surrounding clouds and air and turns it into precipitation. [EDIT: I forgot to add that peer reviews both past and present disagree as to the efficacy of cloud seeding, and some believe it doesn't actually work like that. Others are concerned about the environmental impact of spreading so many chemicals into the atmosphere.] The polymer is also real; yes, it can absorb 100s or 1,000s of times its own weight. The problem is that there is so much moisture in the atmosphere, especially during a storm like that, that you would need all of that polymer in the US just to stop one tornado. So, yes, it would absorb the moisture, but that little of an amount would be negligible. Finally, the storm portion. One of several factors in a forming storm, especially a tornado, is the moisture. It helps facilitate the pressure changes necessary for storms to "roll" like they do. If you were somehow able to gather and absorb [read: mop up] all the moisture, there would be a less drastic difference in the pressure zones, and the activity should mellow out. So, is it possible? Sure, but the amount of materials it would take makes it impractical and infeasible. That is why I say "yes, but no." Michael Crichton-the author and creator of Twister and Jurassic Park-was a brilliant man, and loved studying cutting-edge science. He even had his MD. This "requel" (as Scream V put it) did a wonderful job at bringing that modern technology mixed with sci-fi imagination.
