Just as an aside, I'm addicted to reaction videos and watch a couple dozen every day (and some I repeat, because they're just fun - like this one) and by my count, more than 90% of ALL reactors say that phrase, even those who don't have English as their first language. To be frank, it's starting to make me cross my eyes.

Thank you for making me feel like I"m not as weird as I thought! I'm addicted to them, too, and have a habit of returning to certain reactions when I need a laugh -- What It Do Dave and "We Don't Talk About Bruno" or SauceyDad with "Valhalla Calling" or "Warriors" are two big ones - as is Kazandra Brock -- her reactions leave me in stitches.

In response to your question at 12:53, they are filming at the NEW Pattycake Productions studio (the old one got bought out by some tech giant and they had to move) and the lighting was all done in-house by Eli! He designs and runs the lighting for most if not all of VP's (and Geoff's) videos nowadays. Also, notice the cool reflections on the floor? VP kept the floor of the studio wet using mops for the entire shoot to make the set look more like the Upside Down! For me, all of the little details really take the video from good to (dare I say it?) EXCEPTIONAL.

It’s always so great to see your reactions. This was the first video filmed at the new location for Pattycake Productions. They weren’t even completely moved yet. But the 15’ ceilings (as opposed to 10’ in the old studio) is allowing for more flexibility in lighting and shooting. At the premier, Layne said the arrangement for this came quickly - only 5-6 hours. I’ll mention one thing you seemed to miss. Just before Ashley’s levitation, in the section with no beatboxing, Layne was singing the lead. It’s a voice we don’t hear often enough, but one we love to hear!

Once she starts floating, all of the guys are frozen too. I'm guessing that's a Stranger Things reference (I've not seen it but I can appreciate the theatrical elements of the video) but the effect of them all being frozen save for their singing in that moment is just so good. The fear on their faces makes more sense too. In the same vein, when the guys all immediately check on Ashley after she drops down, that feels genuine because it likely was, as they probably wanted to make sure she had not landed wrong. As someone who has sprained her ankle from a drop half that height, I can say it is a genuine concern.

the sound effects of the fall are just the best. Such unexpected events/sounds. I wonder if you have listened to the minis from last year - Layne arranged a whole series that were basically synth and computer sounds from the group. Everything from Simpson's theme to APP themes to Bob's Burgers and more. I was wondering then... it was like a playground, a bunch of 60 second performances in which everyone learned to make non-human sounds with their voices.... I knew there'd be some interesting performances ahead building on that, and there sure have. This one was the most amazing for that type of sound so far...

Re-watching/listening to this reaction I suddenly heard a really REALLY high two-note bop at 4:45 just as Ashley sings "It doesn't hurt me." Also, Geoff displays the most amazing collections of "slides" from time to time throughout. Watch his hands and when he looks like he's pulling notes from the ground, pay attention to his voice as he goes through a short series of immensely graceful octave glides (possibly called "portamento" if I'm not mis-reading my google search.) First time I could find it in this video is at 7:18. (Soon after which Mortius goes into total breakdown.) Never seen Stranger Things and never heard this song before this video was released. I did really very much enjoy your reaction to the Hound and the Fox cover - they were wonderful. But VoicePlay and Pentatonix are ranked and #1 and #1 in my heart, so I have to say THIS is my favorite.

At the start, when you commented on the Fox and the Hound's visuals for this song, I couldn't help thinking: "Oh, boy, when the video gets to ~spoiler~, he's gonna break (in a good way)!" [tangent] Just had a thought for a future series suggestion, inspired by this: same songs covered by different artists. It would give a chance to highlight the importance of arrangement, independent of lyrics and melody.

I think that’s a great idea as long as it doesn’t become the dreaded competition. Because when each participant does their best, I hate to see somebody say “oh it wasn’t as good.” The composition of each group is different, the resources available to them are different and their musical choices are different. I always hate it when I see somebody say “oh no this one was much better”. There are some I like better, but I don’t think necessarily it was truly “better”, it just appeals to me personally more. I do not care for country music. But Home Free is so talented that I watch the videos anyway just in case this is one where the country-ness doesn’t overwhelm the musicality for me. It in no way means that they aren’t immensely talented - it’s just that that particular piece doesn’t resonate with me. That was a really really long involved unnecessarily personal response to your comment but I’m leaving it there. Regardless of how I feel about competition. It’s still a brilliant idea.
@CapriUni2 жыл бұрын
@@janetdw Oh, yeah ... no. Like you, I don't want any sort of competition to go on. I guess it's just my old "Recovering English Major" vibe kicking in (spend ~mumble~ years writing "compare and contrast" essays, and eventually, it becomes hard wired in the brain). ...And 99% of the country music I like was written pre-1985, so...
@janetdw2 жыл бұрын
@@CapriUni Yes! I love some of the old standards like Patsy Cline‘s Crazy, some Johnny Cash, the “old timers”. It’s just a whole different genre as far as I’m concerned. And yes, I get the English major thing. I remember that from school and I hated it😖
@CapriUni2 жыл бұрын
@@janetdw question (for the sake of my personal hypothesis): were you more of a math person?
@janetdw2 жыл бұрын
@@CapriUni Nope. I took algebra geometry and pre-Calc, but at that point counselors intervened and recommended that I be “more realistic in my expectations for a career (sub-text: for my gender)”. There weren’t a lot of women engineers so I would be wise to do some thing else. I caved -I am of a far older generation and women were trained to be compliant and I wasn’t much of a rebel. Fortunately I love to read, so I took every single English class that my school offered - and there were a lot of them. I went to a magnet school before they were such a thing. I took classes in Canterbury tales, Beowulf, a seminar on Hamlet, the Bible as literature, folk songs as poetry, modern satire. If there was a class that involved reading at my school I was there. (We didn’t have a traditional eight class days at my school. We had 27 fifteen minute periods and classes could last anything anywhere from two periods to 12 periods. It was very much like college. In fact I was able to challenge the college prerequisites for English, math and biology because the community college was taught at my high school while they waited for a campus to be built.). We were fairly close to Stanford University and participated in a lot of their experimental education programs. As a result I never had to take a grammar class (which is probably pretty obvious from my run on sentences.) Instead, in seventh grade I took linguistics. No diagramming sentences for me! I don’t regret all the classes I took and I don’t regret my choices, but I always wonder what would’ve happened if I had been born 30 years later. They wouldn’t even let me take mechanical drawing in eighth grade because “everybody knows girls are bad at math and science”. When they told me only boys could take it I asked what part of their body they held the pencil with - and that is now part of my permanent school record. 🤣. My one act of rebellion. They probably would’ve suspended me but my father was with me and laughed so hard he fell off the chair so they just huffed and gave me a dirty look.

Congratulations on having a move-in date - that's fantastic news! And I'm glad that you liked their cover - I'm not a fan, but I think that my love for the original is likely the reason in this case. I just can't get behind them switching it over to being so upbeat. (And maybe in a major key?) But your reaction has helped me to appreciate the technical parts more. Covers/remakes that futz with genres can be a ton of fun - I really adore Me First and the Gimme Gimmes punk take on Gordon Lightfoot and Billy Joel, for instance. But I think I like songs that are in minor keys too much to be sanguine about them getting cheerful. ;)
