I think it's very understandable. The war is over, he thinks from now he'll get to go home and experience an era of peace, he can finally stop and appreciate the world for what it is. But little did he know, they were crossing the sea of monsters, and everyone who lives here has the "kill or be killed" mentality. Polites was doomed from the start.

The whole segment with Polyphemos relies on an ancient greek law; the law of xenia, or hospitality. This law was so important that it was overseen by Zeus himself - as in, those who violated it would be punished by Zeus and basically boiled down to "dont hurt, maim, or kill your guests so help me" and would in part be 'signed' by sharing a meal between host and guest; eat the food, you've entered the contract, and now xenia protects you both. Now, my only source for what I'm about to say is a translation of the Odyssey I read so I can't vouch for the accuracy, but according to xenia, those who requested your hospitality were to be lodged and fed for three days before the host could ask them their name or business. Strike one against Polyphemos, who asks this question right out the gate. Then there's the concept of guest gifts - as part of hospitality being exchanged, host and guest would exchange gifts upon their meeting, usually something valuable. Strike two against Polyphemos, who decides his guest gift to Odysseus will be eating him last which. Is not a guest gift due to the very spirit of xenia. Obviously. (Side note; this is also the crux of the Underworld, where if you eat the food, you're Hades's guest - which means you never leave) Anyway while us modern folk would think Polyphemos justified in demanding who tf is up in his house killing his animals and threatening violence, by ancient greek standards this made him a thug, and notably a bad host deserving of some eye-poking. (Oops this got long- But I felt context adds another layer to the song so here it is uwu) (Also, in the translation I read, Poseidon visits Polyphemos after the ordeal while Odysseus is on the raft sailing away from [spoilers] and once he learns what a terrbile host his son was he essentially drops his grudge which is. Fair, I guess. If a bit late lmao)

@alexandralugo1743
@alexandralugo1743 14 күн бұрын
@@LoreCatan That's because Polyphemus prayed to Poseidon and told him what happened. Poseidon is a god and can hear prayers in his name. At least that's how the story goes. After Polyphemus prayed to and sobbed to his father, Poseidon went off to kill the man who mutilated his son. He didn't stop to wonder if Polyphemus deserved it. Which is fair. Poseidon was a beyon pissed father who wanted to seek vengance for his son.

That's something Jorge has mentioned the reasoning for if I saw correctly. He was inspired by iirc the music in the Kingdom Hearts game series, where the boss battles had epic music. So he decided to have the "Boss" battles Odysseus faces have the "Boss's" name said in the background to make it just that more epic and memorable.

The way Survive frames it the cyclops sees Oddy be lifted up by Polites, the zoom in and then shortly after he becomes the first death. I wonder if the animatic is framing it as the cyclops notices they have a stronger bond then most and goes after Polites with the intent of cause as much harm as possible to the man who in his eye wronged him more than any other.

I'm placing this comment on Casper's video too, but a little Greek insight to Remember Them. In Greek belief, for someone to pass over the River Styx and make it to the Underworld, they have to pay the Ferryman, Charon. That payment is typically buried with their body. There wasn't time to bury the fallen men. Odysseus knew his men and Polites would have no afterlife. He knew there was nothing he could do, except.. Remember Them.

Basically, Odysseus and crew killed Polyphemus’ Starter Pokemon. Just to make the Cyclopses response make more sense emotionally. That was something it took me about fifty listens to realize myself. By ancient Greek standards Polyphemus's violations were even more egregious, with him in the wrong and violating xenia from the beginning. But by modern standards he was still in the wrong after he accepted the wine. Odysseus stated the terms for him receiving the wine were them leaving alive. By drinking the wine he accepted those terms, only to immediately change them and decide he was going to kill all of them. That makes him a thief as well as a murderer, using the personal injury he received as justification. To remain sympathetic and on the right side of things morally he would have had to decline the wine and refuse the terms, citing the fact they weren't enough compensation.

Even knowing it had to be coming from the first few lines he has due to general genre awareness, that first named character casualty hits like a ton of bricks. It just goes to show what an incredible job the music and the art do together to pull you into these people's stories and make you care about them even if you know it's gonna sting. side note: As someone with a background in raising herd animals(never had sheep myself but I had friends and neighbors who did, while I grew up around my mother's horses, and my brother and I raised goats, which are kind of similar to sheep but more independent and sassy) you really do reach a point, very quickly, where they are individuals to you and also your babies, and you will fight any and all threats to their safety, up to and including god, with your teeth and fists if that's all that's handy. So while I don't agree with his methods, I 100% understand where Polyphemus is coming from in this saga, and it's not so much cyclops behavior as it is average farmer/shepherd behavior. That's just how it is. You defend your flock or herd to the best of your ability, because they need you and they trust you. To be fair, at this point, that's what Odysseus is doing, too.

I just realized something. In Polyphemus, Odysseus says "Why would the lotus eaters pass up on all this food" as if there's no possibility that they just prefer Lotus because they've been mind controlled by it.

19:22 I don't think that's it. I think he was insulted by the trade, overhyped wine for his favorite pet, so he decided to punish Odysseus further, echoing his father.

Yeah I think that's where he was coming from too. Interesting to me though, by drinking it without expressing that sentiment, he lost the moral high ground. Drinking it meant he accepted the terms, and then went back on them. If he had refused the wine then by some modern standards he would have been in the right to take at least Odysseus' life in exchange for the harm done to him, but because he drank that wine he became in the wrong.

@@feistsorcerer2251 @sora9138 had something interesting to say assuming they're right. My interpretation could be completely wrong at least for the actual Odyssey, I might still be right for the musical.

@@somedudewatchintv5297 Yeah they have a really good comment from an Odyssey and Greek history standpoint. I wonder if Jay has elaborated about that moment wrt Epic in any of his behind the scenes stuff, because I still think your interpretation holds a lot of merit for the tone of things in Epic.

I believe the red eyes are symbolic to their willingness to kill. The cyclops started with red eyes, odysseus was first of the crew and he riled up the crew. Polites was the only one without the red eyes, instead white for peace.

Personally I absolutely DESPIZE Odysseus because when ever he does something wrong he NEVER tries to fix it in fact I think this is a perfect example of Odysseus screwing both him and his crew over by being too self righteous and emotionally inept to just admit he was wrong and try fixing it. The reason I say this is when Polyphemus shows up his eye whites are white but when he sees what they'd done they turn black meaning he's incredibly upset but when Odysseus tries to bargain with him using the wine they turn an almost gray color meaning while he wasn't completely over it he could've been persuaded into at LEAST leaving the crew alone but instead Odysseus angers him again by saying the eye to eye thing, which Cyclops are EXETREMLY insecure of their one eye, so he'd just made Polyphemus realize that Odysseus didn't respect him and that he didn't care that he'd hurt him. It's why NONE of the gods have at least a little bit of respect for him because he sees himself as just as important as the gods and doesn't try to fix things even when he's aware of the fact that he's wrong. I mean in ruthlessness Poseidon calls out his hypocrisy yet even then when Poseidon gives him a chance to redeem himself by apologizing not ONCE does he actually do it.

I mean it's especially fucked up considering one of the only times Polities is actually even mentioned in the Odyssey it's something to do with Circe. so he shouldn't even have died here if we were being accurate to the source material (not to say that it isn't amazing storytelling)

one thing that kinda broke me when I started watch the fan animations is the parallel scene in mircsy's Warrior of the mind were they are fighting the boar and Odysseus is able to save Polites from the changing boar vs Survive where the scene is setup the same but Odysseus cant save Polites from the cyclop's club

I love the music in the Cyclops's saga sooo much. The cello showing the classical instrumentation of mortals, but the VOICE having the distortion and electrical effects of the gods. Also, when at the start it's the three men and the sheep it's normal, but when Polyphemus comes in everything becomes more echoey, there's reverb on the words to show how large the cavern (and monster) really are.

An interesting part of the Nobody thing is that it makes much more sense in the Ancient Greek as well. The word for nobody is ουδεις (ou-de-is) and he is Οδυσσευς (Odu-se-oos). The words are pretty similar and so Odysseus just adapts his name slightly.
