God, the ending where Stanley is a crazy person who dies is just so fucking powerful. "I am sane. I know what is real and what isn't. I am in control of my life." Then she rushes back to her job where people's arbitrary impressions of her control her life and she sees it as okay and normal. It honestly just brings a tear to my eye.

It's plausible. Stanley never really questioned what was outside of his office because he was doing his tasks. Only when the tasks stopped coming in did he see that no one was around.

Is this narrator the stand in for the developer/creator? That's really cool! I've seen stand ins for the audience before, that's quite common but a stand in for the creator is interesting.

The nature of the narrator and Stanley change drastically from one ending to the next. In some endings, the narrator is all powerful. In others, his power is drastically limited. Sometimes he knows exactly what's going on and other times he's just as confused as the player is. In one ending, he'll be an antagonist to the player. In another he'll be helpful. Sometimes he's the one who constructed the story, sometimes Stanley is, and sometimes it's an unidentified third part who pulls both of their strings. I don't think it's really possible to pin down just one thing that the narrator is supposed to be.
