Mana is needed to use some items, it's a separate resource to energy recovered only after battle. It has some requirements though, the item has to be connected via stuff with the conductive attribute to mana stones containing enough power. If they're not connected then the item can't be used. You get mana stones quite often, the game likes to give them often enough that items using mana are worth grabbing.
