I don't think the point of the scene is supposed to be taken as a technical legal indictment. The point is that we are supposed to hear in his voice that he is being brutally honest In admitting what he did because he cares more about saving this kid's life then he does protecting his own ass. In that moment if you're on the phone you're not going to be thinking about the legal technicalities of what happens if you lie lol

You know, this scene is actually genius because he got this guy to confess to a crime under duress, so it can potentially be dropped. So even though this is a real confession based on the circumstance, this makes the outbursts inadmissible.

Interesting take. I think you are right. That's what it means to have to master actors. Denzel would have added a tragic/nihilistic slants to the character. Travolta would have nailed the quiet desperation of the character.
